Canon PIXMA iP4300 Photo Printer (1438B002) Review

Canon PIXMA iP4300 Photo Printer (1438B002)
Average Reviews:

The Good:
-Outstanding output quality for the price
-Good speed
-Automatic Duplex printing
-Lightweight drivers/software
-Inexpensive ink
The Bad:
Aside from a slightly cheap asthetic feel, I can't find a thing. And for such a low price, it's to be expected. Other manufactures might have shnazzier printers at the same price point, but keep in mind most other manufacturers don't sell printers, they sell ink, so you pay for it in the long run.
Overall I am extremely satisfied with this printer. Coming from an IP4000, I had high expectations, and this did not dissapoint. I have owned every major brand of printers (HP, Epson), and Canon is absolutely where it's at. Cartridges are much more affordable, you aren't forced to install 400mb of junk that loads 5 processes at windows startup (HP), and the attention to detail is great (i.e., you can program the printer to shutoff after X minutes of being idle). Do yourself a favor and buy a Canon.

Average Reviews:

I've had this printer for about a month, and so far found it excellent at everything. I had been using an Epson printer and scanner and both turned into nightmares, I find this machine to be light years ahead, especially in speed and ease of use.
It's easy to setup, the software is easy to use, it's quiet and it prints fast!
Text is nice and crisp, it gives you 3 different settings to choose from, even the fast mode is good quality for most uses if you want to save ink.
Copies are quick and easy and very good quality.
Photos are very sharp, have good contrast, colors are rich overall. Comparing a portrait type shot to the same one I had printed at a lab, It was tough to tell any difference, except this one was a bit lighter. This was on Epson paper, have not tried Canon paper yet which is supposed to work best.
Scanner is easy to use, relatively fast, and quality seems very good.
Overall this machine is a pleasure to use with impressive quality.

Every thing about this printer is perfect for my use except the printer's unbelieveable thirst for ink. I don't print photos but it's almost as if I can hear the ink being sucked away. At roughly $40 a refill, it may become too expensive.
I've had the printer just over a month and had to refill. December was a high use time because I was printing 2009 calendars, with lots of color, and with preview copies, probably ran more than 100 pages. Very fine quality printing but whoooosh! ink's gone.

Canon Pixma iP4500 Photo Inkjet Printer (2171B002) Review

Canon Pixma iP4500 Photo Inkjet Printer (2171B002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had a Canon BubbleJet BJC-4200 long ago, and after that printer I was very hesitant to even consider another Canon printer. When my most recent printer died, an HP DeskJet 970cse, I needed to find a good printer that could print duplex and produce quality output. After reading many, many reviews I decided to give Canon another chance. I am very glad that I did so.
The Pixma iP4500 arrived in a huge box, and as it turns out it needed the space. This is a larger printer than I expected, and as a result I had to rearrange my desk to find room for it. That's a small oversight on my part. The printer itself is an unassuming-looking box of a machine, though it resembles more of a printer when the paper trays are populated.
Setup was easy and straightforward, though I do recommend using the "getting started" insert before setting everything up. Though setting everything up is relatively self-explanatory, it is helpful to see the illustration of what to do in order before making the leap. Overall, setup took maybe 20-30 minutes once the parts were all out of the box and everything was set up.
Once configured, installing the drivers is simple. Drop in the CD, follow the prompts, and turn on the printer at the right time. No fuss.
Once set up and powered on, the printer is ready to go to work. I print a majority of my things in duplex mode so I tweaked the driver configuration to make it the default, after which the setting is more or less invisible. Everything in the driver configuration is very easy to find, straightforward, and simple.
There are two ways to feed paper into the iP4500. There is a top-loader which is the default paper source and there is a front-loading paper tray ("cassette" according to Canon's documentation). Heavier papers such as card stock should be loaded from the top-loader.
So, how does this printer perform? I'll break it down into two parts, speed and quality.
Speed - this is a relatively fast printer! Feeding it a print job that conists of a two-sided black and white print this printer can churn out the pages, including the dry time for the front page, in about 20 seconds. Granted, this is my experience and your mileage may vary but it's a good starting point from which to base your evaluation of the speed. My previous printer would take at least a minute to print the very same documents, and it still couldn't keep up when in draft mode. For photo printing it churns out a full-page 8.5"x11" borderless photo in roughly 45 seconds.
Quality - what good is speed without quality? This printer backs it up. The text and basic image quality is acceptable, though it could be a touch better. This is not noticeable in day-to-day print jobs. On photo printing, though, this printer is an absolute showstopper. The photos it prints, on photo paper, are better than most magazine prints and could easily be used for photo studio gallery shots.
It would be nice if the printer actually had a USB cable in the box, but this is a small thing.
Overall, this is a high-quiality, high-performance printer that is sure to please even the staunchest of critics. It is fast, creates beautiful output, and is very easy to set up.

Canon PIXMA MP460 All-In-One Photo Printer (1449B002) Review

Canon PIXMA MP460 All-In-One Photo Printer (1449B002)
Average Reviews:

I bought my PIXMA on more or less no research, other than having really liked Canon's printers in the past. My several year old Canon S600 stopped working suddenly, and my kids needed to print homework ASAP. So I ran to a nearby big box store, and picked one up. The price was reasonable, and I thought the scanner / copier functions would come in handy (although I already had a flatbed scanner...but it was so old-school it still only ran on a parallel cable...remember those kids!?!).
Anyway, it set up in no time and worked perfectly right off the bat. It makes good quality prints, and the photos look fine too me...not heavey on the red. It's also nice to put a memory card right in the printer and print photos without needing to even have the computer on. The copier function, although only used twice in two months, works good. The printer came with lots of bundled hardware. Usually, I have no use for the bundled stuff, it's always the LE edition or very limited in someway. But the Canon Easy Photo print makes it a snap for me or my technophobe wife to print photos in whatever size and on whatever paper without any big headaches. The OCR software is very good. My three year old OmniPro, which I paid a fair amount for, doesn't work as good.
I can't say yet how efficient its toner use is...haven't had it long enough to judge.
There are a couple of downsides. It is SLOW to start. First copies sometimes take long enough to kick in that you wonder if something is wrong. But when it starts, it is quite fast. For plain paper printing with some photos and graphics...the graphics barely slow it down. Full color, high quality photos take a little longer, but are still fast. You just have to be patient for that one page to start. Scanning is the same way...the scanner has to "think" for a bit before it starts, but then it's fast. It is a little bit noisy...nothing to send the neighbors calling the cops or anything...but it's the noisiest ink jet I've owned. The scanning is a little noisy too.
But overall, I'm thrilled to have gotten a good quality item and at a really great price too. I'm very happy with it!! I think most routine users would be too.

The Canon PIXMA MP460 All-In-One Photo Printer lets you print, copy and scan photos and documents quickly and easily. Whether working from the home office, helping a child with his/her school project or simply printing out pictures from a family trip, Canon provides solutions that satisfy consumers' preferences in look, feel, design and functionality. With a sleek, slanted design featuring rounded corners and a space-saving low profile, the stylish MP460 livens up any home or small business office. As more and more consumers begin to familiarize themselves with the benefits of a multi-function unit for the home, their demands go beyond just having the best technology. Ease of use and reliability have come to the forefront. The MP460 is designed to be extremely user friendly while delivering optimum results time and time again. High-Resolution Printing and Versatility The MP460, sporting a high-gloss, acrylic finish, enhances productivity, maximizes home office space and adds a dash of photo fun to the workflow. With ink droplets as small as two picoliters, and resolution as high as 4800 by 1200 color dots per inch (dpi), this photo printer can print 4 x 6 inch borderless photo-lab quality prints with dry-to-the-touch precision in just about 52 seconds. It also offers print speeds up to 22 pages per minute (ppm) and color speeds of 17 ppm. There's no need to worry about complicated operating instructions to achieve these excellent results because direct printing is a snap thanks to memory card slots and PictBridge capabilities for fast and easy PC-free printing. The MP460 also delivers fast copying speeds of 22 copies per minute (cpm) in black-and-white and 17 cpm in color. In addition, it can copy a 4 x 6 inch borderless photo in approximately 57 seconds. The convenient scanner delivers 1200 by 2400 dpi (optical) and 19,200 by 19,200 dpi (interpolated) resolution, as well as a 48-bit internal color depth for vivid images. To improve copying and scanning performance, the MP460 is equipped with Canon's state-of-the-art Z-Lid technology, which allows users to lift the scan lid approximately one-inch over a three-dimensional object for easy scanning, even with bulkier items such as personal notebooks. For added convenience, the 1.9-inch color LCD display lets you enhance images before you print for better pictures. Plus, you can print from your computer, or direct from memory cards, cameras, Bluetooth devices, and even camera phones. Dual Color Gamut Processing The MP460 employs advanced copy technology to help give you amazing reproductions of original images and documents. Dual Color Gamut Processing Technology improves color accuracy by independently controlling brightness, hue, and other elements to make sure that there are minimal differences between the original and the copy. In addition, with Text and Image Separation Technology, the system can actually differentiate text from an image, making black text and fine lines darker and sharp. Now when black text appears over an image, the text on the following generations of copies can be virtually as clear as the first. These technologies plus hardware improvements in scanning and printing can help make a copy almost indistinguishable from the original. ChromaLife100 System The MP460 AIO uses the Canon ChromaLife100 system, including the FINE print head technology for great photo printing. When using select genuine Canon photo papers and inks, prints can resist fading for up to 100 years when stored in an archival quality photo album. The 100-year-lifespan rivals that of many traditional film based photos, long considered by consumers to be the benchmark for image permanence. Prints produced on Canon Photo Paper Pro with ChromaLife100-compatible inks have an up to 10-year gas fastness when exposed to open air. In addition, ChromaLife100 prints, when created using genuine Canon photo paper like Photo Paper Pro or Photo Paper Plus Glossy, have up to 30-year light fastness when displayed under glass. FINE Engineering and the Inkjet Nozzle Launched globally by Canon in 1999, the Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) advanced print head technology is one of the keys to the impressive speed and high photo quality in Canon PIXMA photo all-in-one printers. Canon FINE uses a groundbreaking high-performance multi-nozzle print engine that ejects consistent and microscopic ink droplets. The results are high-resolution photos with detail and clarity in less time. The MP460 comes with a one-year limited warranty. What's in the Box Pixma MP460 photo all-in-one, power cord, cartridges (PG-40 black, CL-41 color), easy setup instructions, document kit (setup software and user's guide CD-ROM, registration card, and cross sell sheet.)

After switching to Vista, we couldn't get working drivers for our old printer and scanner. We first tried an HP all-in-one, but it had multiple paper jams from the get-go. So we tried the Canon. We've had this printer for about a month, and it's fantastic in all regards. SOFTWARE is simple to use, and doesn't take over your computer the way that HP software does. SCANNER is fast and easy. PRINTER puts out very good copies, and the "Light" setting is useful for basic printing while not using too much ink. The design is small and boxy (it reminds me of a 1950's refrigerator, but small), and doesn't take up much space. You can use it as a copier without the computer being on, which is quite handy.

Canon PIXMA MP160 All-In-One Photo Printer (Gray) Review

Canon PIXMA MP160 All-In-One Photo Printer (Gray)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was reasonably happy with my 5-month old printer until I discovered how Canon's ink management works. These comments are not necessarily specific to the MP-160 and some are probably relevant to any printer using Canon's new chipped cartridges. I learned a lot from a Canon MP-150 (v. similar to the 160) service manual obtained from the net.
Here are my beefs:
--the driver provides only 4 warning levels: 70%, 40%, "low," (whatever that means) and out. After "low" comes on, I've been able to continue printing for a long time, but I'm afraid to start an important job because I don't know how much ink is really there. And I now realize I replaced my first color cartridge prematurely - when the "low" light came on - not realizing I could probably go for quite a lot longer without replacing the cartridge. FWIW, I got into the service readout. I'm still on my 1st standard black cartridge (low warning light is on) after having printed 368 pages since I got the printer (the vast majority in black economy mode). Canon estimates 355 pages/black tank in standard mode. I'm on my 2nd standard color cartridge (low warning light is on; having replaced the 1st prematurely). Canon estimates 308 standard sheets/color tank and 120 4x6's. I've printed 9 photos.
--If I understand the MP-150 service manual, a standard black cartridge contains 43 gm of ink. The printer periodically cleans itself and uses 0.1 gm of ink when it does. My service readout says that my printer has cleaned itself 10-13 times and if the MP 160 uses the same amount of ink to clean itself, that means that 3% of my ink has gone to cleaning. This system of ink management would also explain why my color ink level suddenly went from 40% to "low" even when I hadn't recently been printing in color. I was probably near "low," the printer cleaned itself and since there are only 4 warning levels, the ink level appeared to drop suddenly for no reason.
--Canon has made it difficult to refill their cartridges or use 3rd party cartridges because the ink monitoring system is disabled unless you're using a new Canon cartridge. So if you use a refilled or 3rd party cartridge, you won't know how much ink you have left.
Very telling: the MP-150's product life, per the service manual, is 6000 pages (about half in black, half in color) or 3 years of use, whichever comes first. That is, Canon **expects the MP-150 to fail in 3 years or less**. This doesn't bode well for my MP-160.
I did not spend much on the printer. In fact, I'll pay more for a couple sets of ink cartridges than I paid for the printer. It seems to me that by building low-end printers with very limited product life and by making it hard to use generic inks, Canon is encouraging us to fill landfills with their printers.

Canon PIXMA MP250 Inkjet Photo All-in-one Printer Review

Canon PIXMA MP250 Inkjet Photo All-in-one Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Canon makes great inkjet printers, and although the All-In-One (AIO) MP250 is so cheap considering that it comes with both the color and black color cartridges that it makes you wonder what shortcuts Canon have taken to give you the rediculously low price point, this AIO does not disappoint.
Scanning speed is impressive fast at 300dpi (max is 600 dpi), somewhere around 11 seconds for 8R color photos, and the copying function is around 5 to 10 seconds for a full page black and white. The device scans the first half of the page, prints it halfway and then scans the remaining portion of the page.
The downside to this device is that it comes with a very pathetic LED display that, when used without the manual, is a total nightmare. The maintenance feature displays up to 10 different functions using different alphabets, so unless you have them memorized, you won't know what the device is doing when you press one of the start buttons when the LED display is displaying anything other than a number. Also, the "Fit-To-Page" function seems to work only when you're copying an A4 document to 4R size. It does not seem to be able to blow up a smaller page to A4 size.
The device prints beautifully sharp photos, however, since it does not mix all four colors (it only uses CMY, rather than CMYK) to print them, the contrast of the pictures does look a bit weak. I've tested all kinds of Canon papers with this device and the output is impressively colorful and sharp.
Worth the money.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for, and I am LOVING this printer!!
When you first get it, make sure you set aside some time to set it up. It takes a bit of time to get it all together and install the software, but the instruction guide makes it VERY simple with easy/clear step by step instructions. (really, I promise, super user friendly)
I was happy to see that it comes with a sample of three sheets of Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II so I could test it out right away. I was blown away with the quality of these prints! Side by side with mail order developing and pharmacy developing, I couldn't tell a difference, except I actually prefer the Canon paper. I immediately ordered Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II, 4 x 6 Inches, 400 Sheets (2311B031) from Amazon.
The paper is so easy to load, unlike my previous paper which I had a hard time lining up the photo paper just right..the Canon is VERY user friendly. Pictures are printed suprisingly quick, they state aprox 20seconds, but it was quicker! As a document printer it is lightning fast as well (yes, it isn't just for pictures;)!
I've been having SO much fun playing around on [...] (Canon's "Creative Park" website)! I'm already planning our Christmas cards to be printed at home so also ordered Hallmark Premium Blank 4x8 Photo Cards from Amazon. :)
One thing to note, this is not wireless and does not include the necessary USB cable..which wasn't a problem for us since we had an extra from our previous printer.
I couldn't be happier with this and highly recommend!

The PIXMA MP280 has satisfied that need. It comes with a bunch of bells and whistles, but I was looking for something I would use every day to print, scan and copy, something to replace my Epson printer and Epson scanner (two separate components). This fit that need very well.
The price would lead you to believe that its quality is not very good. However, unless you're a photographer or graphic artist who requires really high resolution output onto really good paper, this is a fine addition to the office.
With that said, here are some notes:
First, you need to supply your own USB printer cable for this device. The printer does not come with one. Personally, I find this to be a huge miss. No manufacturer should assume that any customer has all the tools for the job. It's the same cable I use for my Epson, so I'm fine. This is such an easy way to make it easier on the end user. Therefore, this is a big miss.
SETUP AND INSTALLATION: I'm on a Mac, so setup was complete and I was printing in under 30 minutes. The manual says you need at least 20 minutes for software installation, but mine was installed in less than 10.
OUTPUT: Color printing was satisfactory. Nothing that I could hang on a wall (but I don't need it.) At standard printing, the color output was insanely slow - less than two pages per minute. If you use color printing at the "fast" selection, not much quality is sacrificed, and the printing came out to about four pages per minute. For black and white, the printing was again satisfactory, with about six pages per minute. As a note: In relation to the IPM, the problem with that measurement is that while we all print images, 99% of the time they are still on regular 8.5x11 paper. So the image could be nice, but the paper still has to come out. What I printed above were pdfs, and the color was SLOW.
COPYING: Very easy. One button for color or black and white with satisfactory output. The copier warming up takes longer than the copy itself - a total of about 30 seconds.
SCANNING: Again, satisfactory. The DPI is not very high, but this is an everyday scanner. Most of the customers would be people who want to share images on Facebook.
COLOR CARTRIDGES: One of the things I hated about my old Epson was that I had to change out color cartridges about once every two months. I have run several dozen color prints through this and it's now telling me that I need a color refill. Ugh. So I'm not thrilled that I may face the same situation with this one.
Overall, three stars. This is a solid printer for everyday use, and I like the compact size with the all-in-one features. The lack of a USB printer cable and the fact that it doesn't do a very good job with color ink consumption keep me from giving this really high marks. But this has a place in a home where it will see a lot of output, perhaps in a home with school-age children or home office.
A good all-in-one, worth the money.

Canon PIXMA MP495 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One (4499B026) Review

Canon PIXMA MP495 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One (4499B026)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The PIXMA MP495 is a fine printer with all-in-one features and WiFi capabilities. The driver and software installation, however, did not go so smoothly (Windows 7 x64). I can't imagine a layman going through the difficulty I went through getting WiFi working with this printer. But once it's configured, it works quite well.
Document Printing:
Funny enough, this is probably the least interesting part of the all-in-one. There's not much that can be said in this category. The MP495 is a very competent document printer with all the features you'd find in any inkjet printer. Paper loads from the back, so it's a bit more intuitive which side of the paper will be printed on, but it also means you need more space heightwise.
Photo Printing:
As a photo printer, the MP495 is both fast and high quality. I found that the supplied 'Photo Paper Plus Glossy II' sample paper outperformed some HP photo paper I had. And the MP495 outperformed another HP photosmart 385 printer I have in both speed and quality. So I am quite pleased with the performance here as I find this to be one of the major draws of this device. Canon claims about 86 photos from one Color ink cartridge. I have not owned the printer long enough to verify the accuracy of their claim.
Scanning:
I don't scan very often, but it's a very useful feature to have when you need it. In a scanner I look for speed, image quality and usable software. I'm quite pleased with the MP495's scanner capabilities. My test involved a sheet from a notepad that had a light gray watermark-like background. The scanner picked it up no problem. From initialization to scan completion took approx. 20 seconds, which I find adequate. There's a scan button on the printer, but pressing it doesn't do anything if the printer is hooked up via WiFi.
WiFi:
One of the main draws of this printer is its wifi capabilities. But since the printer has no controls on the device itself for configuring the connection to your likely secured WiFi access point, it must be configured through software installed on one of the computers on the network. Configuring the WiFi was a bit tricky. After repeated failed attempts, I figured out that the trick is to plug the USB cable (which they call a WiFi configuration cable) in at precicely the right point during setup -- during the detection phase. Plugging it in too soon seems to cause it to fail -- and I waited the first few times too. Regardless, this will no doubt be a hurdle for novices trying to configure this printer. I suggest having a competent computer person around while configuring the WiFi connection on this printer. With that being said, not having to have the printer close enough to my computer for the USB cable to reach is fantastic.
Software:
The software is not very impressive but adequate. There's a utility for managing your scans and OCR text conversion and all that good stuff. Canon boasts an automatic scanning feature that automatically detects the type of document being scanned. I tested it out and it seems to work well as far as being convenient. The software however lacks ability to open the file location in Explorer or even open the file using the default application. So that's quite annoying.
Included with the software is "MyPrinter" utility that allows you to connect to the printer and configure various options. It seems like nothing more than a shortcut to the printer properties utility included with windows. There's no options for configuring the WiFi connection in this utility. You must use the Setup program to do that -- something I find rather annoying since this is something you should easily be able to access without having to pop in the driver disc or dig up the setup utility.
If you decide to go with the Easy install instead of the custom install, the setup utility will dump some annoying shortcut toolbar application called Menu something or other. I removed it right quick.
There's also something Canon calls "Web Print Ex" which allows you to change the layout of web pages to print them out better. I didn't test this software out.
Cost:
At around $80, half the cost of this printer is in the ink. On Amazon, the ink for this printer seems to run around $17 for Black and $18 for Color. Canon reveals the following for ink life:
Black Ink Tank LifeBlack: 220 pages (PG-510), 401 pages (optional PG-512)¹
Black: 2955 photos* (PG-510), 7275 photos* (optional PG-512)²
* Estimated supplemental yield
Colour Ink Tank LifeColour: 244 pages (CL-511), 349 pages (optional CL-513)¹
Colour: 83 photos (CL-511), 122 photos (optional CL-513)²
Note that I found this info on Canon's European site. The actual cartridge models are PG-210 and CL-211.
So even with those numbers, which are probably the upper bound, you're looking at around 19 cents per photo plus cost of paper. While the photo quality is excellent, I've ordered prints online for around 5 cents per photo. So the ink here is certainly expensive.
Conclusion:
Pros
- Wifi
- Quiet and fast scanner
- High quality and fast printing
- Reasonable purchase price
Cons
- Expensive ink
- Clunky software
- Lack of LCD for independent configuration
Rating the device itself on its merits alone, I give it 4 stars. Whether that ink cost is a major deterrent to you is really up to you.
