(More customer reviews)This works fine with Linux. It shows up on the USB bus as 1a86:7523, and uses the CH341 driver. I expect it will work automatically with most distributions.
The one that I received was green instead of the pictured blue. It comes with a flimsy USB extension cable, which may be helpful if it doesn't fit nicely plugged in directly. As noted by others, it has screws to attach to something instead of sockets for the screws on the serial cable, but the fit is usually tight enough that the screws are pointless.

(More customer reviews)This is by far the best USB to serial adapter I have used. A few years ago I went through many different adapters. Everything from $5 e-bay adapters to more expensive ones. The others either did not work they way they should, or they died on me after a short period of time.
I just purchased a second one of these to have in my backpack all the time. I use this adapter for everything from administering servers to configuring network equipment.
The disc that comes with this device come with drives for Windows, Linux, and Mac operating systems. I have had not problems using this with both Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista (Ultimate and Business tested). In addition, I was able to get this to work with Ubuntu (with minicom) without any additional drivers.

(More customer reviews)This adaptor is considerably cheaper than many on the market but works perfectly well. It appears robust and well made as well as simple to use.
I've not used any other adaptors so don't know if this is universally true but the thing that I liked most about this adaptor is how simple they've made the software that ships with the device. There is no fancy front end bloat ware, just a simple set of drivers on a CD.
Although, the installation is easy if you have a small ammount of knowledge about PCs, it wouldn't have hurt to put a note on the box for the benefit of less tech savy users of how to find the instructions. There are no paper instructions with the product but there are instructions hidden on the CD. Open it up in explorer and look in the directory with the same name as the product. The instructions are good and show how to install in straight forward pictures of exactly what to click on.
Using Windows XP, Just insert the CD, plug the adaptor into a USB port and wait for the 'found new hardware' wizard to start. All the settings are standard and your PC will know where to find the drivers. After you've installed it, you may need to know the COM number of your new port. You can open the hardware manager, that's in right-click 'My computer' - properties - Hardware - 'Device Manager'. Look in the 'ports' sub menu and you'll see the new port with it's COM number. Any software that connects to a serial device will need to know the COM number to work. The other way to find out is to just try ports 1,2,3,... untill the software for your PDA or whatever manages to connect. I know that sounds complicated but I've spelled it out in great detail, it's really fairly intuitive.
In short, before you junk that old programmable remote control or PDA because your new laptop doesn't have a serial port, use this, it's cheap and it works.

(More customer reviews)This USB-RS232 converter is based on the PL-2303 chipset and is one of the few with true cross-platform support. Other models are lacking drivers for Mac, Linux, Vista, and 64-bit flavors of Windows. If you need something that'll just work no matter what you're running get a USB-RS232 adapter based either on the PL-2303 (like this one) or the FTDI chipsets.
There are other converters out there that provide more reliable data transfer at higher speeds, but this is a great buy for the money and will suffice for just about any task you need it for.
