(More customer reviews)This is a direct comparision between the Linksys WUSBF54G and TrendNet 509UB.
Both perform as expected when used as a standalone hot spot detector.
Both perform as expected on Windows XP. Installation was quirky for both. After driver installation, inserting into USB slot it wasn't recognized at all. Fiddled around for awhile and it finally detected the device. Had to disable the notebook's builtin wireless before XP recognized the device.
Client software does not detect a device under Windows Vista Ultimate RC2. I assume this will be true for Windows Vista RTM too. Inserting the device into a Windows Vista RC2 system often completely froze Windows Vista (had to hold down power button for complete reboot). Had to disable the notebook's builtin wireless before Vista recognized the device.
Appears that the TrendNet and Linksys devices are so similar that they must be made by the same OEM or reference design. As expected, evaluation results are similar.
1. Both devices seem to have same sensitivity, similar to notebook's internal wireless card.
2. TrendNet device doesn't have Windows XP signed drivers so an extra click during install is requried. Also installing on new USB ports requires extra clicks.
3. TrendNet device supports 801.11a whereas Linksys does not.
4. TrendNet device sometimes crashes Vista Ultimate RC2.
5. Neither device's software client works under Vista Ultimate RC2. This isn't a deal breaker for me as they both work under Vista Ultimate RC2 networking as a USB wireless key. You just lose the client software feature.
6. The Linksys has a somewhat useful backlit LCD, TrendNet does not.
7. Both devices work as standalone hotspot locators equal well.
8. In hotspot mode, both devices show SSID, channel number, encryption mode, etc.
Conclusion: For XP, I recommend the TrendNet so save the extra dollars. For Vista, I recommend the Linksys device as it never crashed Vista Ultimate RC2 whereas TrendNet device was gave occasional freezes.

Lexmark X6650 All-in-One Wireless Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I just purchased the X6650 yesterday at Wal*Mart ($119.00) and installed it on our wireless network in about 10 minutes. Cartridge installation was tricky as it's hard to tell whether they are in or not until you close the lid and the LED panel confirms they are installed correctly. It took 3 tries for each cartridge. I ran the box through it's core function set and everything worked quite admirably, reasonably fast full color prints, acceptable text, good document feeder and fax functions. Automatic print settings yielded a mixed text and graphic document that was noticeably inferior to my old Epson R200 - but the print was still quite nice. I expect to use the box at relatively low volume and do not anticipate using it as a photo printer - good thing, too, as the photo prints on glossy photo paper were not up to par. The printer has one black cartridge and one color cartridge, which I expect in the long term will end up costing more to replace than printers with separate cartridges for each color. Overall, the box looks quite handsome on the desk and performs quite well for a low-volume jack-of-all trades, master-of-none.

Lexmark Wireless X6570 All-In-One Dual Cartridge Inkjet Printer Review

(More customer reviews)This printer is NOT ideal for the person who wants a cheap and "economical" solution with all the features mentioned.I must admit, at the price range, I fell victim and tried this product, since I liked the built in wireless feature. What they do not tell you is that you MUST first hardwire your system to the printer FIRST to "import wireless" settings and then you can use it wirelessly. Well, to me, no biggie, right? Now, I had to tell my router to give it a permanent IP address because the printer kept changing up, and when you have 3 wireless notebooks, its aggravating since your computers dont know what is the current address to print to.
I've only printed a total of 21 pages, and wow! I AM AT 80% black ink left [all pages were incoming faxes]. This the not very impressive page yield, and the box mentions an average of 220 pgs avg yield of black pages. Wow. . . not so!
Not only that, this printer stays in my bedroom next to my desktop, and the printer makes random noises in the middle of the night, freaking me out. This printer had to go. Not to mention, the fax machine has to scan ALL the pages FIRST in the feeder and THEN when done scanning, then it begins transmission!
Did I also mention that the printer will randomly disconnect your phone calls because it wants to "detect a potential fax" even if "auto answer" is NOT enabled?
Also, the printer programs it's ink cartridges to STOP spraying after so many "drops" which means that even when it stops spraying, you may have residual ink that could have been used but the box even says this on the labeling!
This printer was most definitely a huge disappointment. The only GREAT feature was the automatic 2 sided printing feature. That was IT. Other than that, Lexmark. I am sorry. . . I am going back to HP. The REAL friend in my house!

(More customer reviews)First, let me preface by saying that I am not "tied" to any particular brand or model. I've had, and/or still have: Epsons, Canons, HPs and Lexmarks (I tend to shy away from Lexmarks low end units, but the higher end units work fine) and they ALL have their good apples and their bad apples. I, for the life of me, simply cannot label this as a bad apple. And believe me, after reading all the negative reviews, I tried! It works without flaw on Vista 32 bit, Vista 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit RC1(Using the Vista 64 bit drivers). Both via USB and via WiFI with an old Linksys WRT54GL.
/PREFACE OFF
I work out of my SUV and needed a small printer/copier to use while I was on the road. This so happened to be on sale a few weeks ago and was the cheapest AIO, with the exception of the Lexmark which I was not willing to purchase, so I bought it. I got it home, preformed the normal new printer setup ritual, contemplated some sort of ceremonial dance due to all the negative reviews, and dug in.
---FIRST RULE OF THUMB WHEN INSTALLING ANY NEW HARDWARE: Create a restore point! If anything goes haywire, you can just "roll back" to this restore point.
---SECOND RULE OF THUMB: Do NOT use the drivers provided in the box. Ever... Instead download the drivers and/or firmware/system updates and/or patches from HP.
---AND THE FINAL RULE OF THUMB: Unless you love bloatware(God knows, HP wants you to...), find the most BASIC and SMALLEST driver set available that still allows full feature operation. When I searched (What a novel idea, right?), there were two "junior sized" drivers for this particular unit and both gave summaries as to what they do. The first one was the "HP Officejet Basic print&scan driver" and the second was the "HP Officejet Basic Driver - IT Professional Use Only". Now, don't let the "professional use only" scare you. It installs just like the beefier versions with a setup.exe, it's just WAY faster to install and WAY smaller. Once installed, you have the normal scan and print functions, without the hassle.
I have successfully scanned via Windows Scanning & Printing (WIA) and also via Adobe Photoshop CS4 (WIA). I then printed numerous photos and documents on both photo and standard printer paper with not so much as a peep or a jam. Yes, I'm serious. And no, I'm not even close to being "easy" on it. It sits in my truck all day and night with inside temps reaching a scorching 115 degrees Fahrenheit and has worked every single time I called on it. Trust me I'm as shocked as you.
This brings me to my last point, that I'm certain someone is just dying to call me on: "Why should people have to use workarounds? Why can't it just work?". That is a very good question. But it is also a question you will find yourself asking more and more in life, as time goes on. This is, unfortunately, a fact of life. As things get cheaper and cheaper, manufacturers have to cut corners to keep up with their competitors and quite simply, things get overlooked. It sucks big time, and we as customers shouldn't HAVE to use workarounds, but if you want a machine that does everything this one does, for less than the price of just a basic inkjet a few years ago, you're gonna have to make exceptions. It's a necessary evil, folks.
In closing, might I suggest one thing: Before jumping on the Haterade bandwagon (and this includes mindlessly rating me down for no particular reason other than you couldn't get it to work for you, so therefore I must be lying), try to put forth a little effort on your part to rectify the problem. Is a simple Google search, or a simple visit to HP.com really THAT difficult? Lord knows, you'll spend MUCH more time than that on the phone with the foreign "help desk". Not to mention the time it takes to create such negative reviews.
Now this isn't to say there's been no bad hardware shipped, as I'm more than certain there are some who got lemons straight from the factory and even all the research in the world won't rectify that problem. But after reading all the reviews, I found that the majority of the issues are either due to user error, or fixed in a software driver update that the user never bothered to check for.
If you want jack of all trade items at bargain prices, sometimes you have to do a little work.

(More customer reviews)I looked and researched wireless printers and was going crazy. This one had all postive reviews so I decided to order it. I wanted an all in one printer/scanner/copy/ fax and wireless. At 149.00 dollars sale price I decided to go for it.
It came in a huge box and I thought what the heck did I order and when I took it out of the box it was bigger than my other all in one, but the double sided printing attachment adds some bulk (I have not tried this feature). It is noisier than my HP 4280 all in one, but that is not a big deal.
Set up was fairly easy, I just followed the instruction set up page. The software took a long time to install. I am familiar with printer set ups and installing software so no problem there just time consuming. It came with everything I needed including the USB cord (usually not included). The fax was easy to set up and send (I have not received a fax yet)It has speed dial too. The wireless works perfectly from my laptop. I'm familiar with HP software so the program is easy to use for scanning and it's easy to do copies too.
I am unfamiliar with printheads that you have to install yourself and I do not know if they have to be replaced periodically or not. The ink comes with a pop off top that was kind of scary but you just pop it off. Cartridges are very easy to install. It seems to have to go through a lot to get going including noise.
It took me over an hour but I wasn't in a big hurry.
The only problem I have encountered is with my new HP pavilion laptop 64bit running Vista. My desk top is a dell running XP, and I didn't have any software problems. The software installed on my laptop with no problems except it gives an error message when I shut down my laptop. My HP 4120 did the same thing, HP has not been able to give me a fix. It's a 64 bit problem.
I'm pretty impressed with all the features and I have printed out some 4 by 6 photos and had no problem using photo paper or 4 by 6 paper. The paper tray holds tons of paper which is nice when using wireless, in case I forget to check before printing.
I only gave it 4 stars because of the Vista 64 bit software glitch.
I am an intermediate to advanced computer user.
