SVP FS1000 Black DIGITAL FILM 35MM NEGATIVES & SLIDES SCANNER Review

SVP FS1000 Black DIGITAL FILM 35MM NEGATIVES and SLIDES SCANNER
Average Reviews:

This seemed like a slick idea and with the claimed 5MP seemed like it would produce decent images. Unfortunately, I can't even get close to the quality I get from using my digital camera to photograph images projected on the wall by a 1950s projector that I bought for $5 at a junk shop.
Also, the unit I received has an annoying blob on all of the images which isn't on the LED panel at the bottom (which you can clean with the brush provided), but must be somewhere on the sensor that you can't clean. I needed the brush because the unit was full of dust and plastic shavings.
A waste of money!

I can't wait to pack this up and send it back. It makes really noisy and ugly scans from clean pretty photos and slides. The iris is very center weighted and the contrast is extreme. I thought to pay a little extra for a combo scanner was smart, but I feel taken. This is a piece of junk. Save your money. Don't buy this scanner!

Pacific Image Electronics' PrimeFilm PF1800U USB Film Scanner Review

Customer support [is bad]; the drivers and software that I bought in March 2003 had a 1996-1998 copyright date; and worst of all, scans get progressively darker. A scanner that can't handle exposure settings! it's OK until it runs thru it's 'calibration' routine, then it's the beginning of the end. I went thru two different units, they both were terrible.

I had problems with this product on my lap top - Windows 7. The snapshot/copy did not work, which completely defeated the point. I got to see the negatives, but could not convert to digital photos. Once I downloaded the driver and program on my main computer, which is Windows 2000 or XP, it worked great!

Pacific Image Electronics MemorEase Plus for Computer Review

Pacific Image Electronics MemorEase Plus for Computer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Memor-Ease 35mm film and slide scanner at Costco a few days ago, which is the good news, since they'll take it back without complaints, restocking fee, and other nonsense. I've done a lot of digitizing and scanning, in the past 20 years, photos etc., and I figured I'd try this small scanner since it was inexpensive (~$50) and the box reads that it will quickly scan at "12MB in Tiff, 24-bit color in Jpeg" and has a "5Mpxl CMOS sensor equal to 1800 dpi". Sounded pretty good for what I needed. I ran the software on Win XP with plenty of memory and hard disk real estate, and there was no lag time at all in the usage. Above reviews are correct, it is fast, the software loaded correctly the first time, and the scanning is very straightforward, and relatively quick.
The bad news: However, I couldn't get the scans of my slides to look any better than less than VGA quality, where there was lots of graininess and mosaics in the colors, the scans were all very dark which needed to be lightened on each one (adding a not insignificant amount of time to each post-process - I need to scan several hundred family and work slides), and just not the quality I'd expect from a slide scanner with the published specs, even though its just a cheap one. Faces were especially grainy, and not at all the quality of the initial slides.
Amazon has this listed for $79 which was Costco's regular price without a coupon, and for that price I'd be very unhappy. For $50 this may work for a number of people, but if you want the scans to look just like the slides you are scanning, with the same crispness and clarity, this is not the scanner to use. In deference to tech support, I can't find them with a geiger counter. I have been calling it for 3 days, the line has always been busy during various regular hour calls, so I am not able to ask the company itself if I am just not setting things up correctly. (I am pretty meticulous when it comes to following directions and reading manuals/install sheets, and I believe I have set this up all correctly.) My scans in TIFF mode were very grainy as well. I tried many different settings in JPEG mode, which is the file format I want, but the highest non-compressed JPEG mode is still way too grainy. The Adobe Elements 5.0 software which comes bundled with this worked flawlessly, but software is only as good as the scan it gets fed. I've sent an email to tech support and if they reply to me in a couple of days, and fix this problem, I'll be happy to revise this review to a more positive note. Otherwise, its back to Costco for a refund-o. Hope this helps! - Jim M.

This product is a good value for the price range. It allows you to easily copy negatives, slides and various sizes of pictures. Quick, easy, and very simple to figure out how to use. For the home user wanting to preserve large volumes of negatives, slides or pictures, I would recommend this product.

Using item to review and copy 35 year old slides to my computer. Does a very adequate job in my mind. Price and quality were both good. Tried a similar product that I was unhappy with and could not even get the drivers to download. No such problems with this item. Would buy it again.

I bought this item with the sole intention of scanning negatives. It came complete with everything I needed to do that. It also came with most other accessories you would need if you wanted to scan pictures or slides. The 3 trays for different picture sizes are good for the most common picture formats. I found it very easy to use and the onscreen menu is very straight forward once you get use to it.

To scan, you just push a button and that's it. It's essentially a small 5MP camera inside the box that takes a picture. It you are scanning negatives the scanner knows this because you slide a switch before you insert the negatives. The software in the scanner does a good job of reversing the negative automatically.

The problem was that the quality was just mediocre. One of the issues was when adjusting the brightness or contrast of the scanned image the center was always darker. Maybe a bad lens or CCD in the scanner. Another problem I had; to insure the film frame is perfectly centered there are notches in the negative tray that are securely locked in at each frame while you push the tray through. Well after about 100 pictures, whatever grabs those notches broke. So I had to be careful and hold the tray with one hand and make sure I didn't move while I captured the image.
This was frustrating. I tried to contact the manufacturer and got no response; unacceptable. So I contacted the seller, Slim Sharp, and got an immediate response. After a few e-mails, they e-mailed a shipping label and I returned it. After a few days we were refunded 100%. I was very impressed with the professionalism of the seller, and they always responded to our e-mails quickly and courteously.

This is a product with promise. It doesn't seem like it would take much to make it a winner. But right now I can't recommend it. If they come out with a higher quality version I would probably purchase it; especially from Slim Sharp.

Ion 35mm Photo Negative and Slide Converter to PC (SLIDES2PC) Review

Ion 35mm Photo Negative and Slide Converter to PC (SLIDES2PC)

I have a large amount of my dad's 35mm slides, mainly from the 50's and 60's. I wanted to digitize them for him for a Christmas gift. I checked into services that do this professionally and found them to be out of my price range as I literally have around 700-900 that I want digitized. Next step was to look for a scanner to do it myself.
The best (Nikon w/Digital ICE) also out of my price range. So I landed on the Ion Slide2PC. I figured, this would at least get them into 'viewing' quality. At 5megapixels in a decently high res right?
I also got a rocket blaster and a static master to clean the slides before hand and cleaned each before starting with a puff of air and a brush of the static master.
I put the slide2pc the on it's highest setting and went to work. While they aren't Nikon quality, I must say that I'm impressed with the output. I wish that I could tweak the lighting a little so the under and over exposed would come out a little better but with a little photo shop magic, I'm even able to fix those up.
Most are print quality - not perfection as the lines aren't as sharp as perhaps they would be with a more expensive scanner, but many look excellent.
Really I was patient. I gave it the requisite 5 seconds for the white balance between snapshot and transfer. and I did all in .tiff so I could edit each if necessary.
I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to save money as it's quick and effective at digitizing your slides. I have not tested it on film negatives.
