Microtek ScanMaker i900 Flatbed Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)I wanted a scanner that would scan any size film negative and paper too, but did not want to to pay a million bucks for it-This is the one! I know an antique dealer who gets these glass negatives from sales and estates and I have been able to place 4 of them on the pull-out drawer and scan them with great results. I have also scanned some old negatives from film cameras from the 1920s and 30s. The scanner has a large platten (legal size) for doing paper and a drawer like platten that pulls out from the bottom for doing slides and negatives. There are several inserts that will accept the different types of media. I have found that the 8x10 glass drawer is the most versitile and easiest to use.
The i900 comes with 2 different software packages for both Mac and Windows; Scan Wizard Pro, and Silverfast, professional scan software. I installed both of them but so far have found it easy enough to stick with just the first one. It has a very intuitive interface and I have had no problems at all. The "Digital Ice" technology is interesting and effective but it is slow- I have found it just as easy to do a regular scan and repair the photo myself in photoshop.
The only thing that might count against this thing is it's size- It's big. And it's heavy. It's dimensions are 15"x22"x6" and it weighs 30 lbs. So if a small footprint is something you have to have, forget this baby.
Installation was a snap- my Mac just loves my new scanner- and so do I. I'm real glad I bought it.

Canon CanoScan LiDE 50 Color Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)I read the great reviews here (and elsewhere) on the LiDE 30, prompting me to buy the newer, faster 50. I have USB 2.0 ports and wanted the better performance ? and wasn't disappointed! The 50 can scan a full 8.5x11 color image in less than 30 seconds at 300dpi, including several seconds for the scan mechanism to reposition itself afterward. The optional "preview" was so fast it wasn't worth timing. My guess is 5 seconds or so for the above preview.
I won't rehash all the nice features of this scanner since many of you have read the LiDE 30 reviews. It seems to be an LiDE 30 with impressive USB 2.0 Hi-Speed performance added. It's also capable of generating 48bit color output and 16bit monochrome output, whereas the liDE 30 is half that, not that this is really important. 24bit is 16 million colors and 281 trillion colors is something I don't relate to.
Aside from speed, I was pleased with the space saving design and attractive "stainless steel" appearance. The scanner bed has sufficiently high edges to allow me to easily position a sheet of paper in proper alignment, without it trying to climb over the edge. A lot of human engineering went into this product!
Windows XP really loves this machine. The software installed without the slightest hiccup. This scanner is as hot-pluggable as any device could be. XP recognizes its presence and absence immediately. Even though the LiDE series requires no power source other than from the USB port (boy do I enjoy the absence of another power brick!), I prefer to remove power from the scanner when it's not in use and it's a snap to pull the cable from the front USB port. (If you're curious, the LiDE requires 498mA against the standard USB output of 500mA. Probably 10% or less of the current draw of CCD technology scanners.)
The package comes with some impressive looking software but all I wanted to do was scan images from PaintShop Pro and Adobe Acrobat and enjoy convenience copying. There is appx. 500MB of software if you load everything but I only installed the XP Driver and the CanoScan Toolbox. I did this not because I didn't want the other software, but really to see if the scanner would be fully functional without it (including the 4 "one-touch" buttons).
I was glad to discover that the CanoScan Toolbox has everything that's required to Copy, Scan to a program (PaintShop Pro?), Scan to email, and Scan to a file (including a PDF file). You may like some of the other programs they offer if you want to try your hand at OCR, manage photo albums, and similar tasks. I did install the Adobe Photoshop Essentials 2.0 because I respect Adobe software and wanted to see what this entry level image editing program can do. Not counting the 95MB for Photo Essentials, the driver and Toolbox took only around 30MB or less out of the potential 500MB.
The CanoScan Toolbox is very functional, impressive software. It allows you to setup 7 discrete type of scans with their unique resolutions, scan method (color, grayscale, etc.), paper size, your printer, specify your pet image editing program, etc. Then, you can associate your choice of 4 of these 7 functions with any of the 4 physical buttons at the front of the scanner. Canon has preset reasonable defaults.
There are a couple negatives to be aware of. CIS technology, as has been reported by some LiDE 30 users, is sensitive to the item scanned hugging the glass. This is quite true and even a thin pamphlet will produce a distorted scan, especially at page edges and corners where there's curl. The solution is to press the lid down to flatten the page against the glass. Consider this if you do a lot of scanning from magazines and books.
Another negative is my mild disappointment with the automated scan functions and single button functions --- a bit overrated in my opinion. Scanning to a program or file creates a JPG file first and then saves it and/or gives it to the image editing program. The quality of that JPEG was not to my satisfaction and I'd rather have the imaging program manage the scan and work with the raw scan data.
PDF files can be created automatically but may be a bit bloated and can have a grayish background. This can be improved considerably by choosing "Text Enhancement" or "Black and White" as the scanning mode. If you want to create an occasional PDF file, the Toolbox can do it for you rather easily.
The scanner appears to be durable. I scanned 120 8.5x11 color glossies over a 2 day period and it didn't breathe hard or make any strange sounds. It's also pretty quiet, in my view, although a few have complained it was loud. It could easily be used in a home office environment while you're talking on the phone.
Today I called Canon's technical support to ask some "how-to" questions. It was not toll-free but I got through very quickly and the technician was extremely courteous, knowledgeable, and generous of his time. After one year, they will continue to help but at only $10 an incident. Very good first impression here!
I hope you learned something about the LiDE 50 and its software and technology from this review. If you're on the fence between Canon and another vendor, you'd likely be happy with the LiDE series. If you're on the fence between the LiDE 30 and 50, you'd save $$$ and probably be just as happy with the 30 if you don't have USB 2.0 capability or plan to install a PCI USB 2.0 adapter. (Canon explicitly supports a wide array of Adaptec adapters.)
Good luck with your decision and enjoy the Canon experience if you take the plunge.

Fujitsu FI-5120C Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent scanner and the farthest thing from the functionality of a flat bed scanner. The first thing you will notice is the speed you can scan multiple pages. I am using 400dpi (BW) and the speed is awesome. At lower resolutions, it may take longer to shred your documents than scan them. The unit is very compact, much smaller than the pictures make it appear on the web. I have had this scanner for almost a month and a half, and put two full banker boxes of documents through it with absolutely no problems. The staples take longer to remove than the scanning documents. Stapled pages do cause it to jam, so you will have to prep your documents before scanning them. The USB connection is convenient because its really easy to unplug it and put it out of the way when you're done scanning. The Scandall software is a little less slick than say Adobe products, but it is very reliable and easy to use. It comes with Adobe Acrobat (STD) which is perfect for me as I am converting all of my paper files to PDF. I highly recommend PDF format to anyone scanning mass files because it is essentially digital paper that can be read on almost any computer. I use my computer more than 10 hours a day for all kinds of tasks, and very few computing devices have exceeded my expectations as this scanner has. Getting rid of the constant piles of paper without losing what is on them has transformed my workflow.

Panasonic KVS2026C SCANNER 24PPM/42IPM ( KV-S2026C ) Review

(More customer reviews)We just received this scanner, and it installed instantly. It scans quickly, feeding about 2 seconds per page at 200 dpi and a little over 4 seconds per page at 400 dpi.
We've seen scanners absolutely wreck a computer system, probably due to driver problems, but we checked and did not have that problem with this scanner: the software appears to have been professionally written, though a warning pops up stating that it has not been checked for compatibility by Microsoft.
Pluses are it's fast, easy to install, and very compact: about 1/2 the footprint of an HP Laserjet 4100, but to use it you do have to pull out input and output trays that increases its footprint to about twice its size. It appears to have a very solid paper handling. After watching it work, you can tell it isn't likely to jam or misfeed.
However, the minuses are that it, like a lot of scanners, slightly skews the page, so it looks a little crooked. Most copiers will not do this, so it can't be used to replace a copier. UPDATE 11/9/09: They changed the driver to add deskewing and so as long as you use the sharpie trick below, the pages come out perfectly level.
I run a law firm and our scanning needs are pretty modest, but after seeing how quickly this unit works, we'll be scanning a lot more. I can't say I'm thrilled about the very slight page skew, which my other scanners also have (but they were 1/4 the price) and yet my copy machines don't have, but I haven't played with it fully to see if there is something we can do to correct it.
Update 5/30/06: the skew has to do with the fact that the paper guides spread apart over time as the unit is feeding pages. We put a small marking pen (like a fine tipped sharpie) between one of the moveable guides and the side of the input tray and it has stopped the skew entirely. I'd rate the unit 5 stars now. Most marking pens are slightly cone shaped, so you can put the pen in until it stops and it will hold the moveable paper guides in place. You only need to use one pen: the guides are connected.
Update 11/9/09: As noted, the skew problems are gone with the update drivers. And wow, it's still going strong nearly 1000 business days after I bought it. Never jams. We only run about 200 pages per day through it: it's rated for 4000, but the bulletproof paper handling and speed was worth buying such a heavy duty scanner. 5 years later, I'm only disappointed that Panasonic has not updated their scanners in nearly 5 years, though they did update the drivers and the new drivers give you just about every feature. You can still buy this one or the faster 2046 - twice the speed for more than twice the price. You can buy the cheaper 2025, but it is rated for a much smaller duty cycle - 1000 pages per day, and I'm a bit afraid of how it will last with people beating up on it. You might also look into the Canon 3010c, a slightly faster scanner that came out in late 2008 that appears to have a few more features, like auto delete of blank pages. It's about $300 cheaper than this one. But honestly, to have a mechanical device that has given us no trouble at all for 5 years and cost me about $1 per day of use to purchase, I'd be hard pressed to buy a different one when this one finally breaks. Keep a bottle of compressed air nearby: when it makes noise, spray the paper dust out of it and it will keep running. Clean the rollers occasionally with rubbing alcohol an q-tips.

Epson Perfection 1240U Color Flatbed Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)I just received this scanner a few days ago and I'm very impressed. The image quality is astounding. It's also very fast, taking a mere 7 seconds to do a full area preview and 10 seconds (not including seek time) to scan a 4x6 color photo at 300 dpi.
Setup was simple and straightforward, and the supplied documentation was ample, covering both setup and use of the scanner as well as installation of the various software packages. After hearing about the problems with the copier software and HP printers, I downloaded and installed the patch from the Epson support site before even using the scanner for the first time. I have an HP DeskJet 722c and so far there have been no problems, and the one-button copier feature has worked flawlessly.
Are there problems with this Epson scanner? Yes, but they're more annoyances than anything else. First off, there's no on/off button. The manual says to unplug the scanner after use. C'mon Epson, you can do better than that... It's not critical that the scanner be turned off however, as after a few minutes it goes into "sleep" mode and all that's left is the telltale green LED saying the unit is on. Also, the manual says to position your document about a quarter inch from the edge of the scanner bed as there is a small area that the scanner doesn't read (in other words, don't push your document or photo to the plastic "stop" at the edge of the glass). This fault is offset, however, by the scanner's very cool ability to locate and align a document automatically. Yes, it's true: put a photograph anywhere on the bed, and even if it's crooked the scanner will find it, scan it, and automatically rotate it to square it up!
All in all, this scanner is worth every penny and I highly recommend it if you're looking for an upper-end home scanner.

Canon CanoScan LiDE 20 Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)This scanner is extremely easy to install and set up. You'll be scanning photos within about 10 minutes of getting it out of the box. Its also great that it draws its power through the USB chord as its just one less thing you need to worry about plugging in somewhere. The price for the scanner is hard to beat and with Amazon's free shipping, this is about the most affordable scanner out there. Its slim design and light weight is also a plus. So far I have run into only one draw back and that is its very limited depth of field. You cannot put anything with any dimension on the scanner and expect decent results. If the object is not touching the glass, the scanner cannot focus on the object and capture detail. If you're simply looking for a scanner that can be used to archieve photos or artwork, this is a great choice. The included software has enough options to fine tune control but I've been quite happy with the results using the software's default settings. I also scan directly into Photoshop where I can further enhance the results if need be. Its important to note that this scanner is plenty powerful for the average home user. 300+ DPI resolution is more than enough to scan a photo and capture just TONS of detail. If you're not a professional working in print theres just no need for a scanner that will capture 2400 dpi. So don't go looking at other higher priced scanners with super high resolution thinking higher is better. Chances are you will NEVER find a need to scan something in such high detail.

The scanner integrated in fairly smoothly and works accross this heterogenious mix of compute resources equally well. Document feeding is snappy but things get slowed a bit due to network transit times (100MBPS Eithernet). A great way to share a high preformance (in the context of home office) Scanner. I've used many HP machines for years, this is a far better solution and a solid design from Epson.

Epson Perfection 4180 Photo Scanner Review

PROS:
Costs under $200.
Scans negatives and transparencies--35mm, mounted slides, and 120.
Includes very easy-to-use-and-integrate software.
Installs easily (on WinXP SP2).
Makes scans that are very usable in Photoshop CS.
Is able to make scans that I don't need to mess with (for web, email) without using Photoshop.
CONS:
35mm holder allows filmstrip to buckle.
Minor software tweaks would be desirable.
No good way to store film holders when one of them is in use.
I'm an amateur photographer who develops his own film. I had been getting my film developed by an excellent, and inexpensive, local chain that also provided a CD-ROM of scanned images for each roll processed. Once I started developing my own b/w film, I wanted a scanner that could do decent scans so that I could continue to keep medium-resolution "contact sheets" on my PC. I thought that the 4180 might do the trick at a pretty inexpensive price point. I was right.
It scans well, within timeframes that are reasonable. I've read other reviews here, and I'm not sure what everyone expects of their scanners--but given your connection (USB 2.0, etc.) and whatever else you have going on, I think you'll find this scanner performs as expected. It takes a while to do medium-to-hi-res scans, but that's what I expect of a scanner. I expect it to transmit to my PC pretty darn quick, but the scanning part can take its time.
The scanner software does not always detect the framelines between 35mm frames correctly. I think this might be what another reviewer was referring to regarding black lines. Usually, re-previewing the set of frames corrects this. Worst case scenario, you just preview and scan the whole set of frames and then go back and scan that problematic one individually. It's really not a big deal.
If you're intending to scan a great deal of 35mm negatives, slides, or 120 transparencies/negatives quickly, then this is not the right scanner for you. The provided film holders don't hold a lot of frames. I do appreciate being able to scan 12 35mm negatives simultaneously, but when you're dealing with rolls of 24-36, it does take some time. Luckily you don't have to be present during most of the scanning process.
The 35mm frame is very good at holding the film, but because it isn't a sandwich of glass, it does not hold your film flat if it's not flat already. Artifacts in the resulting scan are common, especially at the ends of 35mm strips.
The software should have a way of overriding the "selection" of frames by the software. Usually it's accurate, but when it's not I'd rather not have to redo a single scan because the software selected a too-narrow area or one that overlaps two frames.
The enclosed software is very good. It includes a densitometer, editable histogram, and other tools for working with your scans. I have not worked much with the grain removal and dust/scratch removal tools, but I'm more comfortable working with those problems in Photoshop.
For excellent thumbnails and fast, very good printable scans, I've found this scanner to be excellent.

Epson GT-15000 Professional Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)I received my 15000 two days ago, and set-up took briefly about five minutes. The only difficulty I had was finding where to place it in my crowded studio. It fit perfectly on a microwave stand with casters, close enough to connect to my CPU, but the advantage is that I can move it if needed. I got this scanner because my smaller Epson 3490 has only an 8.5 X 11 bed, and I was weary of stitching two halves of a larger object back together in PhotoShop. That's not difficult, but each half needs color correction to mate and sometimes there are irregularities which need fixing.
My first scan with the GT-15000 was of an 11 X 17 piece of black & white art of mine, and it turned out beautifully crisp and sharp. I plan to use my 15000 to primarily scan my black & white illustrative art for publishing, and so far it looks to do that job with ease. I highly recommend this Epson to those needing a large bed scanner.

Epson WorkForce 325 Color Inkjet All-in-One (C11CB08201) Review

(More customer reviews)This printer is a replacement for a similarly-priced older HP PSC1200, which had all of the same features except for faxing and WiFi. And I can say that this printer is superior in almost every way! The next time you are considering a print cartridge change on your old all-in-one, strongly consider upgrading to this Epson printer.
PROS:
The Mac OSX support is good. The driver CD was easy to install, unlike the HP experience, which has consisted of either the safe but featureless built-in driver or the featureful but computer-destroying install CD. None of those "extra programs" were installed by default by the Epson CD.
The driver supports setting the color management mode to black and white only, and retains it when you save it as a new Printer Preset. If you've had an HP before, you'll know that this is fantastic -- I had to remove the color cartridge from my old HP because it would randomly start deciding to print my black and white PDFs using the color cartridge.
The speed is very good for a low-cost inkjet printer, particularly just black and white research-type PDFs (the majority of what I print).
Paper feeder doesn't occasionally grab two sheets at a time.
CONS:
Printing is a little bit louder than my old HP. It's no dot-matrix printer, but the paper feeder is quite noisy.
Setting up the printer to work over WiFi doesn't work from OSX, so you have to put in your SSID/WEP key at the console. Better hope it's not complicated!

(More customer reviews)OK so the title is only half right I really can't type. That's why this little machine is a godsend.
I'm a computer builder and programmer by trade so I get lots of people who ask me what they should buy in the way of toys. Without question if you "collect" business cards this is a must have.
Installation is a no-brainer and the software is better than what would be expected. I would say that the export features in the software will take care of 99% of PIMS and DBF's that people frequently use.
Sure its a pain in the arse to verify every card you scan but once your collection is added you will only be doing a few a week and that's not so bad.
As with all current OCR that has to work with many fonts and styles you are going to get errors. The included OCR software really does a above average job of getting it right the first time. Better than my typing it in that's for sure.
Another nice feature is that you get a stored copy of your card you scanned. Why is that important? If your eyesight is going like mine, seeing the card at 300% resolution for correction is far easier than reading 6 point type from people who feel they need a life story on a business card.
I could go on and on but this is a top notch product. So why only 4 stars?
Until OCR can get it right 10 out of 10 times I can't say its perfect. This unit is pretty darn close though and well worth the money.

Canon CanoScan LiDE 60 Color Image Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)This scanner is very light and compact. No annoying AC power brick to get in your way as it gets power from USB connection. Small enough to slip into a notebook bag for traveling. Uses small LED light bar instead of traditional fluorescent bulb to perform scan allowing for smaller footprint. A nice touch is the included stand so you can mount it upright on a desk. However, in order to scan this way, the document must be flat else it will fall off the platen before you can close the lid.
Very pleased with scan speed due in part to its high speed USB 2.0 connection. For 200 dpi B/W docs, speed is not much different from my old scanner. The speed of this scanner really shines for color dpi settings of 600 and above. I can scan a 1200 dpi photo in less than a minute. My old scanner took several minutes to perform the same feat.
An important consideration for any scanner is its scan driver. An excellent scanner with a crappy driver will yield disappointing results. The LiDE 60 has an excellent driver with modes for beginners and experts. I had 20+ year old photos that were faded and by setting the fade correction in the driver software, I got scans which looked better with more accurate color than the original photos. It can also scan multiple photos in one pass and the driver will automatically crop and save each photo as a separate file. A great time saver if you're scanning lots of photos.
This scanner does not have a transparency adapter, so if you want to scan 35mm photo negatives or slides you'll need a different scanner. Some may be turned off that it's "only" 1200 dpi, whereas some scanners on the market in this price range are 2400 dpi or higher. Unless you plan to scan 4x6 photos and make lots of 11x17 blowups, 1200 dpi is more than enough if all you plan to do is scan photos to save on your computer. I use 600 dpi for scanning photos. I've done comparisons of a photo scanned at 600 and 1200 and barely notice a difference even at high magnification. Plus the jpeg file size of a 1200 dpi scan is about 3 times larger than that of a 600 dpi scan.
The only annoyance is the high pitched noise it makes as the light bar moves across the platen, particularly at 300 dpi or less. It's much quieter using resolutions higher than 300 dpi because the light bar moves more slowly. This is a minor nitpick as you get used to it after a few scans. I really like this scanner and highly recommend it. You get a lot of value for the price.

(More customer reviews)This scanner is amazing. We have it configured to scan 200 dpi color and it just flies through stacks of paper that are all sizes and thicknesses. As long as the 1/4th and 1/8th sheet papers are aligned at the center they never get missed.
The ultrasonic double-feed connection is working extremely well too. We've tried all kinds of things to fake it out but it has always successfully detected double feeds.
Clearing jams and double feeds are a piece of cake.
We've ran about 25,000 documents through this scanner so far and it has exceeded my expectations.
BTW we are using this in conjunction with Visionshape's Autoscan software for barcode recognition of all our documents. Also a very good product.

Planon Docupen R700 B&W Pen Scanner (DPENR700) Review

(More customer reviews)Bottom line first: DocuPen is a very good device if you do not have too high expectations and use it only for what it was designed for. You have to realize: this is neither a copier, nor a scanner; this is a fax machine inside out. You will get exactly the same quality as from a conventional fax. If that's what you need, than DocuPen is a perfect device for you. Otherwise - don't bother.
The images scanned with DocuPen look almost exactly as if they came out of a conventional fax machine. The pictures looked pretty bad (if heavy graphics/pictures are what you need don't even think about DocuPen) and some of the text lines were stretched in a way a fax machine does when the paper gets a bit jammed. I am sure, with some practice it will get better but not too much as it's humanly impossible to keep moving the hand up to 8 seconds with precisely the same speed.
However, if the text and some light drawings are what you need than this device is for you. I, personally, do historical research and need to copy some articles from old newspapers. DocuPen works great with text. Just make sure you always use 200 DPI even if you don't really need to. The reason is that if you mess something a bit (say, your hand shakes or so) with 200 DPI there is a chance to fix the image later on or at least to be able to read it. At 100 DPI it's pretty much dead end.
The two major drawbacks of the DocuPen (at least for me) are the small memory and inability to work with a PDA. DocuPen's internal memory is only 2 Mb which in my opinion is ridiculously small. And there is no way to increase/upgrade it. Don't believe the ad that says you can store up to a 100 pages. You don't want to scan at 100 DPI, and with 200 DPI 50 pages is the max. What they don't tell you in the ad, is that if any of those pages contain heavy graphics the number could go as low as 12 (!) at 200 DPI (that's what the manual says). That sounds like almost nothing to me.
The small memory issue would not be that bad if the DocuPen was compartable with any of the PDAs. As long as I could download those few pages and start scanning again I would have being OK with that. However, I don't always carry my laptop with me and it is sort of a hassle to bring it to the library every time. On the other hand, my PDA is always in my pocket. If I download those scanned pages to my PDA not only to clear the memory but also to check how they turned out (and re-scan any if necessary) that would have been great. But the DocuPen DOES NOT work with any of the PDAs !!!
I actually made a call to DocuPen's tech support (BTW the guy who works down there was very nice) and talked about this issue. Apparently the problem was not the compartibility but the lack of drivers. The company supports Windows 98/2000/NT/XP (and, I've heard, some of the MAC's OSs) but not Windows Mobile or Palm OS. So, they simply don't know what's going to happen if I connect the DocuPen to my PDA (provided I find the correct cable or make one myself). So if anybody out there feels like writting a driver for the DocuPen to work with Windows Mobile please let me know :-)
They also told me that in six months (Spring 2006) they plan to launch a new model of DocuPen which would have a slot for SD card (yes-s-s !!!) and would scan in full color. Personally, I don't think that DocuPen's upgrade to color scanning is such a good idea. The quality of its images is low enough in b/w and the addition of color would just make things worse. It will also enlarge the size of the device and, of course, the price will go up.
For now, your choice is either to buy the DocuPen R-700 and deal with its small memory or wait six months (at least) and pay more for pretty much the same device (again, I don't believe in color on the "world's smallest scanner") to be able to save your scans on a SD card.
Two other things that I would have changed about DocuPen are fairly minor and are really more inconveniences than major issues. The button that turns the device on is very hard to press. Every time I do that it feels like I am going to break the whole thing. Also the carrying case that comes with the DocuPen does not provide the adequate protection. I wish they made some sturdy metallic tube/box instead of this fluffy pouch. But may be that was the point. The sooner your DocuPen breaks, the sooner you get another one :-)
Overall, I did like the DocuPen and I would recommend it to anybody as long as you clearly understand what you need it for. If you plan to use it for copying a few book articles at your library, class notes from your friend's copy-book or some simple hand-drawings it will work great for you. But if you need quality graphic images of pictures or complicated blueprints and/or plan to scan a large number of documents at once DocuPen is NOT for you. Try to get HP's CapShare 920 instead.

They blamed everything else but the scanner. When I refused to reinstall the hardware yet again, HPs solution was to request I buy a more expensive HP product.
