(More customer reviews)I am a 10 year user of the Visioneer Strobe line of scanners. When my first one died, I purchased the cool new XP100. It was cool, but didn't work very well at all and I went back to the strobe. Now it was time to get a new scanner -- the XP 300. Sound promising, but I found they removed all kinds of features and there is a flaw in the paper return mechanism that they know about, but keep shipping the product. Firt, the paper return. When you push it to the open position, it is supposed to return the paper to you, but instead, it just keeps feeding the paper out the back rather than back to you. Visioneer reports this is a known problem, but still promote this feature in their manuals and marketing. As for the drivers, when you use the One Touch 4.0 driver, it uses a very old version of the Adobe Acrobat conversion utility (v.1.2). The issue with this is that when Paperport picks up the scan, it thinks all scans come in at 150dpi and 24bit color. The problem is that unless the image is at least 200dpi, Paperport won't let you manipulate the image in page view mode (rotate individual pages, despeckle, straighten, etc.). Also, they removed the ability to set the delay to begin automatically scanning. The issue is that it begins to scan so fast that it misfeed the top couple of inches of the paper and causes distorted scans at the top. Further, it is extrememly hard (as on the XP100) to get a piece of paper lined up quickly. With the old Stobes, the paper path was conducive to quickly inserting paper, but with the XP300, you have to align it perfectly or the paper guides snag the paper.
All of this creates too much frustration for me. I was advised to downgrade to the XP200, which retains all of the features and functionality of yesteryear. They really took two steps backwards with this product. It is a shame!

Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)We use this scanner to digitally file our statements and bills. It scans quickly and quietly, without the need for an adapter and without taking much space on one's desk. It partners well with Adobe Acrobat -- we have Acrobat Professional which allows us to crop document edges if the original is less than 8.5 x 11 -- and I've seen no software compatability issues with Windows XP Home or XP Professional. It also allows you to continuously scan multiple page documents (as opposed to scanning each page as its own PDF file).
The one criticism that I have has to do with the software that accompanies the scanner. It does not apparently remember the last settings (e.g., resolution, color vs B&W, and destination directory) so you have to re-enter all of these each time you sit down to scan.
We haven't tried using it for any graphics purpose, but from what I can tell, it's not likely to perform like a flatbed scanner for this purpose, at least for serious graphics work. For a casual scan of a photo for a document or a webpage, it would probably work just fine.

(More customer reviews)I use my scanner to store old documents in my computer so I can get rid of bulky paper files. I keep the paper copies until I probably won't need them again; for example, I keep tax returns for 6 years, then scan them and shred the paper copies. I protect my electronic files with multiple backups including an external hard drive and flash cards. A scanner keyboard fits in the same space a standard keyboard does, but to use it, the sheet feed slot at the top of the keyboard needs to be accessible.
My first scanner keyboard was a Windows 98-compatible Visioneer that came bundled with Paperport 4.0, which I've upgraded to PaperPort 7.0. I like the PaperPort software because it allows you to do all sorts of nifty things, such as rotating and straightening the page, removing clutter, stacking pages, labeling pages and stacks, creating file folders, etc. Unfortunately, my old scanner keyboard doesn't work on my Windows XP system, so I bought this KeyScan product to use with my current computer. I can't comment on the software that comes bundled with it, because I haven't used it. For me, the best feature of the KeyScan scanner is that I can use it to scan documetns into my existing PaperPort files. You do this by opening the PaperPort program, then clicking on the "Twain" button in the PaperPort toolbar, which brings up the KeyScan dialog box. For typical document scanning work, I set the "Document Type" at "Text" and brightness at "Normal."
Any sheet feed scanner is slow, and the KeyScan product is no exception. It takes about 20 seconds to scan each page, which makes scanning a large number of pages a time-consuming project. It has two cords, a power cord, and a data cable that plugs into a USB port in the back of your computer. Its keyboard is the silent type and has all the standard keyboard features.
The KeyScan product is adequate for this work. It will accept standard-size typing paper (8.5 x 11) and has a setting to scan legal-size documents (8.5 x 14), but no wider than 8.5 inches. It will feed different paper weights, but the feed mechanism is poorly engineered, and regardless of what type of paper you're scanning, it all tends skew in the rollers unless you manually guide it. If you get a dark vertical line on your scan, this means there's dirt or foreign material on the glass surface. This is fairly easy to clean by snapping out the plastic feed tray with your fingers (just push on it). I shove a Q-tip under the roller to separate the roller from the glass, and use a Q-tip or piece of medical gauze (which is lint-free) to clean the glass surface.
The KeyScan product has a number of other features that I don't know how to use and therefore won't try to explain. The main thing I would say about it is that, despite the fact it suffers from the shortcomings of all sheet feed scanners, plus has a lousy feed mechanism, at a price of $100 it costs only two or three times as much as a standard PC keyboard, which is a reasonable price to pay for having the capability of storing paper documents in your computer so you can get rid of the paper files. And, as I said, I really like the fact it works with my existing PaperPort software. For these advantages, I'll put up with its shortcomings.

That said, it scans OK and the software bundle includes the excellent Omnipage Professional 15 and the venerable Paperport 11.
Pros:
Nice bundle with scanner hardware, drivers, OCR software (Omnipage Pro 15) and organizer software (Paperport 11). These appear to be full versions and work in their function.

Xerox Travel Scanner 100 Mobile 600 DPI USB Scanner (XTRAVEL-SCAN) Review

(More customer reviews)I use a flat bed scanner at the office but, since I have started traveling much more, I wanted a portable solution to scanning receipts while on the road. This one got some good reviews and I liked the form factor. It will scan full 8.5x11 documents (common at hotels) as well as the small register tapes (restaurants, etc...). It's fairly quick, the images are perfect for submitting to my client, and it fits in my computer bag right next to my 17" laptop. The fact that it's powered directly through the USB cable is perfect - no extra AC adapter to carry.
The applications that come with it are great, too. I love the drag-and-drop approach to building my single PDF of all my receipts. My customers do too. Very easy to work with - everybody can read PDFs.
Only reason it doesn't rate a 5-star rating is because it has developed a habit of generating a faint line on scans wider than 2 inches. If I clean it before every use (about a 3-5 minute process since it requires multiple cleaning passes and test scans), it's under control and works like new. However, the line seems to continually recur and annoying. Not bad enough to ruin the scan but, still, it shouldn't be doing it at all. I may contact Xerox to see what they think but too busy just now to do so.
Not a complete replacement for your flatbed scanner if you need high quality photo scanning but excellent for everything else.
Highly recommended.

Iris USOA447 IRIScan Express 2 Portable Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)Nota bene: I am a Mac user, and this review is only about the products interaction with Mac OS 10.5.
The IRIScan express 2 beats the DSmobile 600 hands down in terms of Mac compatibility, but that was still not enough to encourage me to keep the product. Despite the great OCR functionality of Readiris Pro 11 and the promise of convenience of Cardiris (which I did not get a chance to use), the software interface and workflow has a "we just managed to get this out the door" feeling to it. The interface is not at all Mac-like, and the scanner does not, on the Mac, provide a TWAIN or Image Capture driver. That lack forces you to use the provided clunky applications to make any scan.
Despite Readiris's outstanding OCR performance, the PDF output is less than optimal. The Windows software included with the DSmobile 600 (the only portable, sheet-fed competitor that claims Mac functionality [and doesn't deliver]) produces perfect facsimiles of scanned pages and adds OCR text to the PDF that allows you to search and index it without losing the character of the original document, just like Amazon's "Search Inside This Book" feature for those of you who haven't experienced PDFs like this. Readiris Pro does not have this feature. Its PDFs are what you would get if you took the text document output and printed to PDF: disappointing and not at all useful for archival purposes, my motivation for purchase.
Also, the scanner is EXTREMELY slow, and all-caps are deserved in this case. The scanner takes more than 60 seconds per page. This is impossible to use if you are looking at a stack of documents you need to digitally archive. Enough said. If you are looking to do paperless office on the Mac platform, you need to use either a sheet-fed all-in-one machine from Canon or HP or, even better, get the Fuji ScanSnap, which at $600+ is insanely priced but works like a charm... so I've heard.

(More customer reviews)This is a great little scanner. It scans anything from a business card up to at least a letter size page. I haven't tried a legal size page. I did have a hard time getting it to run on my computer which has the Windows 7 operating system. I was basically trying to pound a square peg into a round hole. After about 2 hours I finally got smart and went to the company site, [...], and downloaded the correct drivers. From there it was a cinch, only took about 2 minutes to have it up and running. I recommend if you are running Windows 7 that you download the proper drivers first. It will save you a lot of frustration.

(More customer reviews)I looked closely at the NeatReceipts scanner before deciding on this one, but think made the right call.
I have been a Visioneer fan for some time, and I saw one of the Strobes used in my doctor's office and have been interested in one ever since.
The Strobes were overpriced so I never bought one, but broke down and got this one. I figured this was the low end of their line, since the documentation is for the RoadWarrior and the Strobe 100, but when I called Visioneer they told me this one has all the latest hardware in it and buying one of the other models would be a step backward. That made me feel better at least.
I should explain my decision: I used Quicken religiously and have always wanted a way to easily attach receipts to Quicken entries. (Older versions of Quicken had ways to, but they were all iffy and imperfect. Quicken 2007 does allow more direct scanning, although it, too, is pathetic but workable and does work with this scanner). I mention this because it seemed to me that the NeatReceipts scanner's claim to fame is that it reads the receipts and stores them and you can search by them. That's not ultimately what I need. My data is already sorted and I don't need to OCR the receipts--just store them for when I want to see them. Plus, buying this scanner got me PaperPort 11 (I have been using 9, refusing to upgrade due to cost) at no additional cost, which I do use extensively also. A two-for-one deal!
The scanner is actually quite nice. It may not be perfect, or a flatbed, but when I truly look at what I want one for, this is it. I've scanned over 200 receipts with it already and dozens of other documents. It's not as bulky or hard to place on my limited desk space as my old flatbed scanner (Visioneer 9320-USB). Plus, there's no "warm up" time which I always hated.
However, on the flip side, After the unit scans the document quite quickly, it pops up "Converting", which does take way too long for my taste. For a scan that takes say 10 seconds (for an 8.5x11), the conversion process takes 20-30. I THINK that time is dependent on what format you choose to scan to (i.e. Searchable PDFs take longer than PDFs), but I haven't found a format that just "pops" in to Paperport without conversion (I'll note here when you scan from Quicken 2007 into Quicken there is no conversion time--I like that!)
I have also scanned more than a few color photographs with this unit that have come out nicely. I was afraid this was mostly a B&W scanner, but it does well with color as well it seems.
As for difficulties feeding, I can say it is an art. I get more straight than crooked, and Paperport does do a good job straightening them for you, but it is annoying to have to start over. I wouldn't let that "quirk" of this hardware deter you from choosing this unit.
All in all, I am pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to others considering it.

NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner and Digital Filing System for Mac Review

(More customer reviews)I received an advance-release of this product at WWDC08 in June 2008, and I've been playing with it ever since. It is top notch in every regard. The hardware is small and only uses the USB port [no need to find an A/C plug!]. The software is even better, as it grabs data right from the scanned receipt; no need for retyping in most cases!
This is a high quality product, and feels like something Apple has made, as even the packaging is tidy and well organized.
I highly recommend this over the currently offered shareware solutions. The software is really top notch, and the scanner is portable enough to fit in a laptop bag easily.
