(More customer reviews)I was originally very excited about this product and purchased two, one for myself and one for my brother. The CardScan will enable you to scan most of your business cards and save them in your system, thus having it all at your fingertips. The software is great, allowing you to assign categories to all the contacts, to search for contacts in various ways, and allowing export/import/transfer of data to and from PIMs, utility programs and even to PDAs. I use Outlook at work but I find the CardScan software to be more powerful for contact management.
The scanner works well most of the time. With the Auto Scan feature you can set your cards down and, if all goes right, come back later to verify the information. Cards are rapidly read and the images stored until you verify the accurate placement of the card information into the software fields.
This leads me to one of the major problems with the CardScan. Understandably it's difficult to account for all business card formats, with the contact info. being placed in all possible ways. Corex has not fully figured out how to ensure placement of the card info. into the software fields. Only about 50% of the time was most of the info. properly placed. Otherwise you'll have to go through and cut and paste into the correct fields.
The CardScan does not always cleanly scan the business cards. The software is designed to allow you to compare the scanned image of the card to the fields to which the info. was assigned. Good idea but doesn't work so well. To verify that the card was read properly, you'll have to keep your scanned cards with you. Of course, once it's verified you can put the cards away for good.
Two great features of the CardScan: (1) it allows you to scan the back of the business card and (2) you can make your own entries for those cards that are too difficult to read.

(More customer reviews)I am glad I purchased my Cardscan 700, but there are some significant unfortunate missed opportunities and because of that some important functions cannot be done at all. My impression is that this is the best product on the market, due to its scanning properties, which are quite good. There are some serious deficiencies though in the rest of the software which would be nice to have fixed, and which in some cases render the device somewhat useless, since the output cannot be transferred to a useful place.
PROs: It does a pretty good job of scanning. The algorithm is well developed and is actually quite impressive. Even cards that catch and rotate as they go through, producing a funny smeared image, have some of their contents scanned correctly. The superiority of this recognition software is the strong point of this product. There is also an ok database management product that one can use to maintain and look up cards. Operationally the product is especially nice- I can just sit there feeding cards in and typing carriage return after each one, glancing at the screen to catch errors. The card image is retained in the record in the Cardscan database, which is important.
CONs: 1) the exit path has places that cards can hang up, and they can catch as they go through. This happens fairly often unless the card is new and flat, so part of the operation is to try to prevent that, by straightening out bent corners ahead of time, and by adding a little force keep the card from catching and rotating as one corner goes forward and the other is stuck. Quite needless- if the exit path was smooth and continuous, this wouldn't happen - the problem is in the rear of the plastic case. 2) Although the product retains the image of the business card, there's no way to pass that through to Outlook or export it to any other format. This is very unfortunate. I could laboriously do that by hand by cutting and pasting each one, except that Cardscan software does not permit copy / paste functions on the image. Why not? It's easy to implement. 3) Every time I start the program it harasses me about registering, even though I've been specific that I do not wish to. It also harasses me about logging in the online backup facility even though I've asked it not to do that. It therefore ignores the user wishes. 4) The data exchange function allows only extremely crude export to a file, in a simple text or csv format. There is no way to create an Outlook format .pst file, which would simplify importing, and allow for the future option of including an image. Outlook can hold an image in the comment section of the record, but apparently Cardscan folks aren't even close to thinking about this. 5) If I indicate that a data export for a file is destined for Outlook, the field names are not set up correctly, so unless I do some heavy editing of field names, nothing much other than the contact name gets across. If I export directly to the running Outlook program, it isn't perfect, but it's close enough to be usable. Why did Cardscan get one right and not the other?? In neither case can I send the card image over. 6) I was forced to install Microsoft .NET software even though I intended to do all my exports via files. I didn't get a choice- if I didn't install .NET, the installer stopped and exited without installing any Cardscan software.

CardScan 600c - Sheetfed scanner - USB Review

(More customer reviews)OK so the title is only half right I really can't type. That's why this little machine is a godsend.
I'm a computer builder and programmer by trade so I get lots of people who ask me what they should buy in the way of toys. Without question if you "collect" business cards this is a must have.
Installation is a no-brainer and the software is better than what would be expected. I would say that the export features in the software will take care of 99% of PIMS and DBF's that people frequently use.
Sure its a pain in the arse to verify every card you scan but once your collection is added you will only be doing a few a week and that's not so bad.
As with all current OCR that has to work with many fonts and styles you are going to get errors. The included OCR software really does a above average job of getting it right the first time. Better than my typing it in that's for sure.
Another nice feature is that you get a stored copy of your card you scanned. Why is that important? If your eyesight is going like mine, seeing the card at 300% resolution for correction is far easier than reading 6 point type from people who feel they need a life story on a business card.
I could go on and on but this is a top notch product. So why only 4 stars?
Until OCR can get it right 10 out of 10 times I can't say its perfect. This unit is pretty darn close though and well worth the money.

Genius ColorPage BR600 Portable Business Card Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)Unfortunate for this scanner, I own a Cardscan 700c which does a great job at scanning business cards and has very slick software which builds the contact list, imports or exports contacts from/to popular programs, creates entries that have the front and back of the cards, has drag and drop functionality, and more.
I purchased this Genius ColorPage BR600 as a gift for my better half who recently became a Real estate agent. Of course, she has seen my Cardscan in action in the past. Her comment about this Genius scanner was "you could tell its a lower priced and inexpensive scanner. If the print on the card is in anyway faint, this scanner will not pick it up". Also, she has business cards that have black backgrounds with white text (business cards of the agents where she works). This scanner can not scan and OCR them, but the Cardscan scanner does well with these cards.
If cost is the most important thing to you, then this is a good product. But if you are looking for a scanner which can scan almost anything you give it, you should spend more and get a Cardscan product.

CardScan Personal v8 Card Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)This product definitely saves time, but it's NOT 100% accurate. Company and people's names aren't always scanned properly, nor are they put in the correct category (company name, mobile, etc.)
Admittedly, many fonts and logos on business cards make the company name hard to decipher (even for me!) so I can't totally blame this on the scanner. Considering how many diverse types of business cards exist in this world, it does a pretty good job.
The good news is that this product seems to understand NUMBERS very well, and I generally find numbers the most challenging characters to enter since I actually need to pay close attention (and therefore take more time).
Another aspect I like about this scanner is that it's highly portable. It small in size, includes a USB cable (which powers the device), and comes with a carrying case that accommodates both the scanner and cable. Definitely a nice feature to have.
So far I'm pleased with this item. I scanned, organized and "verified" 40 business cards in about 20 minutes, which I think is decent time. Typing them into Outlook would've taken me about 2 hours, or 3 hours factoring in "distractions."
Overall, I feel this is a good business tool to have, and Amazon's low price makes it a good value overall.
