Brother MFC-3100C Inkjet Multifunction Review

Brother MFC-3100C Inkjet Multifunction
Average Reviews:

I have recently purchased this machine for fax and mostly black and white print jobs for my home office. Since then I have purchased a digital camera, and have found this machine produces great framable pictures!!! I would highly recomend this machine for anyone who shops around and wants the most features and quality for the price. I have used up a few ink cartridges printing larger 8x10 photos, but the individual ink cartridges make it easy and cost effective to use. The only thing I am missing is a flatbed, but so far I haven't needed it and have been able to scan pictures through the document feeder. Also a great color copier.

Brother contributes another smart machine (at a smart price) to the multifunction market with this 5-in-1 combination of color fax, color printer, color copier, color scanner, and computer-based fax.
As a printer, the MFC-3100C can produce 10 pages per minute of black and white and eight pages per minute of color, at up to 2,400 x 1,200 resolution (naturally, the higher resolutions are a little slower printing). The 100-sheet paper cassette keeps you always in stock.
As a full-color fax machine, the MFC-3100C features 2 MB of memory, storing up to 100 pages, and 14.4 bps speed, delivering a page roughly every six seconds. With 40 station auto-dialing, the machine also can broadcast faxes to 90 locations. In addition, the MFC-3100C is equipped with a Brother PC Fax Driver, enabling you to send black-and-white faxes from your PC.
The MFC-3100C's scanner function can scan at up to 2,400 dpi, and one-touch keys allow for scanning directly to e-mail or OCR. When it comes to making copies, the MFC5100c can print up to 99 copies at a time at 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution. Copies can be reduced and enlarged from 25 percent to 400 percent.
With parallel and USB interfaces, the MFC-3100C is cross-platform compatible, working with Works with Windows and iMac/iBook/G3/G4, with parallel and USB interfacing (cables not included). The unit is backed by a one-year limited warranty.

Brother® MFC-8640D Laser Flatbed All-in-One Duplex Review

BrotherĀ® MFC-8640D Laser Flatbed All-in-One Duplex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great printer. Duplexing is great. Feeder is great, and really good quality. I got a great price for it and have been happily printing away for months. Drums are pricey, but the toner last a long Time (even more if you put black tape over the "eye" of the toner cartridge so the printer will keep printing until ink is really all gone (approximately 1,500 more pages--That was a REALLY deceptive trick Brother). Only reason why I gave it 4 stars is because the network card which you buy to upgrade it to wireless is sometimes tricky. It will stop working for reasons unknown. I'll turn the printer off and most of the time within a few hours the network card will reset itself and we can wireless print again by changing the IP address. No idea why it does that.
Otherwise, highly recommend.

Samsung CLX-6200FX Color Laser Multifunction Printer Review

Samsung CLX-6200FX Color Laser Multifunction Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
DISCLAIMER: I actually bought the CLX-6210FX, the only difference being a duplexing automatic document feeder (instead of the single-sided automatic document feeder) and optional hard disk and wireless print server functionality (sold separately, of course). The CLX-6240FX comes with the hard disk (also can accept the optional wireless print server), and, according to the specs, boasts a slightly higher print speed (25 pages-per-minute color/bw letter-sized documents vs. 20 ppm for the first two--note that this drops by half when duplex printing). I also bought this from a Canadian retailer (DirectDial), but given the lack of reviews for this family of Multi-Functional Printers (MFPs), I thought I'd post it here (and do it thoroughly).*SETUP*
The 100-lb shipping box (approximately 2' x 2' x 3' high) showed up outside my house a few days ago and required two of us to man-handle down to the office where it was to be set up (Samsung helpfully provides perforated handles to help with this). The instructions for (properly) taking the box apart are on top of the box and make break-down a snap. Once the box is disassembled, the printer is much easier to move to where you want to locate it.
After removing the bits of tape that hold the unit together, the toners were fairly easy to install. One thing I instantly noticed about these, compared to the last few Samsungs I've used (ML-1440, and CLP-500) is that each of the toner cartridges comes with its own drum (which you shouldn't touch or keep exposed to light)! One less consumable to replace in the long run (and probably how it can achieve such high--and constant--print rates, each cartridge transfers its toner to the belt simultaneously instead of having to do multiple passes for each color).
You can connect the MFP directly to a computer using a USB cable, or to a network via 10/100 ethernet. I chose the latter, as I wanted to be able to easily share it--I think the only difference is that you can't use the scanner as a TWAIN device (but this is made up for, as I'll outline later). You can assign the printer a static IP from the front panel, or use DHCP (default) to pull a network-assigned address (which was statically assigned using my WRT-54GL router).
The software took a few minutes to install from the included CD (post-script driver, regular driver, scanner, etc.), and it was able to automatically detect it on the network--not sure if it'll do this when you're printing, so you're probably better off giving it a static IP, however which way you go about doing it. As we've come to expect these days, there was a nice web-accessible interface (http://ip-of-printer) that gives status (and state of consumables), counter, security options, etc.*PRINTING*
Works wonderfully! I printed off 450 legal-sized colored (mostly text) pages in around 25 minutes. Good (IMO) color reproduction, and crisp, readable text. If you're used to certain other printers (at least, Dells and Lexmarks in my experience) there isn't the same waxy, almost glossy feel in the output, but rather, a more matte texture (something it shares with the CLP-500). It does take a minute or so for the fuser to warm up from a cold start, and presumably, from sleep mode as well (length of time until it enters sleep mode is adjustable).
Of course, I printed off the requisite high-res color "test picture" (a Spiderman 3 wall paper I had), and it came through with good (IMO) color reproduction, and little banding (I had to really stare at it for a while to notice a bit of banding in one corner--this disappeared after an inch or so). I would scrutinize this more, but as I don't do a great deal of image work, it's hard to justify churning out more pictures.
How did the toner survive? Well, it comes shipped with the "standard" toners which yield 2500 (black) or 2000 pages (cyan, magenta, yellow), according to ISO/IEC 19798 standards. You can also get high-yield toners which yield 5500 (black) or 5000 letter-sized pages (CMY), again, according to ISO/IEC 19798. What exactly is ISO/IEC 19798? I have no idea, and to find out, you need to shell out a few grand to the ISO (International Organization for Standardization). Though, to be fair, more and more printers seem to rate according to this same standard, and (knowing standards documents put out by engineers) it'd probably come in several binders. But even a synopsis would be nice.
Anyways, after 450 (legal-sized) pages of mostly green text, I had run the yellow down to 40%, the blue to 60%, and the rest had barely been touched.*COPYING*
I copied the image I had printed off, and reproduction was good, with a little graininess (the copying resolution, as far as I know, is fixed at 600 x 600). You can select which type of original (image, text, etc.) you have, but I haven't played around with this very much. Text reproduction works quite well. According to the manual, it does everything a nice little office photocopier should be able to do: edge-erase, collation, zoom, etc., but I haven't really tested this feature.*SCANNING*
According to the manual, the scanner is capable of up to 36-bit 600x1200 dpi (optical) or 4800x4800 dpi (enhanced) resolution when used in TWAIN mode, and somewhere between 100 and 600 dpi (adjustable) when used in scan-to-USB/PC/e-mail modes. After installing the SmartThru software, I was able to scan in a document, and have it show up in the 'My Pictures' folder on my networked computer (there's a dialogue on the 2-line LCD that you're lead through when you press the 'Scan' button, setting mode, resolution, destination, etc.) While PDF and JPG output worked fine, it seemed to have some troubles with TIF output (i.e. all that resulted was an impossibly small file).*CONCLUSION*
For me, it came down to this unit or the very similar Brother MFC 9840cdw. Both even have the same delighter: nifty, stand-alone USB-key operation (scan to, and print-from PDF or various image formats)--something I haven't used. While both have a very similar speed, features, and toner cost-per-page (I took this and the Brother--which uses a 5% page-coverage toner yield--at face value), the Brother will require drum and waste-toner bottle replacements, something not needed for the Samsung (both require transfer belt replacements at 50,000 sheets).
These, along with my previous good experiences with Samsung printers (and really noticeable banding in the admittedly-single output of Brother output I got my hands on) was what made the choice for me. While the Samsung is more expensive (~$75), this works out to be fairly negligible in the long run. At the cost I think this is an excellent SOHO or small workgroup all-in-one, which handles standard office fare very well.

Lexmark X264DN Multifunction Printer Review

Lexmark X264DN Multifunction Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great machine for the money. Warm-up speed is quick and when it begins printing, it prints fast and quite. This machine is great for a home or office environment. The scan to email function is superior to all of the other multi-function machines I've owned. The scanning software minimizes the number of trips you need to make to the machine, so if the printer is in another room, you don't have to run back and forth a bunch of times. The duplexer in the printer works flawlessly. What else can I say, it's quiet, reasonably priced, fast, and has great print quality.
I did run in to a significant installation problem during setup. I set this machine up on 5 different computers. Everything appeared to go fine during the install, but after I shut down 2 of the computers at the end of the day and started them up the next morning, Lexmark's scanning software completely locked up 2 of them and would not let the operating system boot up. Since I didn't need scanning capability on these two machines, I ended up starting them in safe mode, removing the scanning software, and everything worked fine after that. I never called Lexmark's technical support to see if they had a fix for the problem.

Samsung CLX-3160FN Color Laser Multifunction Printer Review

Samsung CLX-3160FN Color Laser Multifunction Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
THE HUNT FOR THE PERFECT ALL-IN-ONE OFFICE MACHINE!
Like one of the other reviewers here, I am in real estate and needed a multifunction machine that used color laser printing instead of inkjet.
But the major consideration for me was a Scan-to-Email (PDF) functionality. When you are working on deals in multiple cities, scanning the large documents is much easier than Fedexing paper all over the place.
I couldn't find any comprehensive reviews on this product because of how new it was. Now that I've owned it for a couple of months, I figure I better post one myself to help out those who are looking at this machine.
After running the machine for a couple of months I am quite happy with it and it is running well. Basic setup of the machine out of the box was very simple with easy visual instructions and tabs. Out of the box I could do color copies, black and white copies, and faxing. Setting up the printer driver over the network was very simple too. Setting up the network scanning and scan-to-email functions involved a bit more pain.
PERFORMANCE BY FEATURE-
COPIES - It makes great black and white copies and decent color copies. Copying is simple, Green button for a color copy, Grey button for B/W copy. You can copy multiple pages via the document feeder or lift the lid and copy something odd sized on the flatbed. My only gripe is that you have to wait for the unit to warm up before hitting the copy button. It would be great if I could just put the document in the feeder, hit the button and walk away, instead of staring at it while it warms up. But it does warm up quickly. Sleep settings for the copier are selected in the web-based control panel.
FAX- Its a fax, I don't know what else to say. It works fine for me, but I don't use the fax function that much.
PRINTER- I can print from my wireless laptop, sweet! The printer setup on the network was relatively simple. I installed the driver, the software found the printer and configured itself and I was up and running. I found that print quality was too thin on the regular setting, I changed it to BEST quality in the printer driver and it looks great now.
My only gripe with the printer function is the additional Software Samsung installs. They included this program called Dr. Printer or something like that, supposed to troubleshoot printer problems. However, it doesn't support the network printing at all. I had the network printing setup perfectly, but I was curious what the Dr. Printer software did. So I ran it, it says "I found and fixed the problem". It had totally deleted all of my network printer settings and set the printer up as local USB connected printer. So I had to reinstall the whole network printing thing again. Damn my curiousity.
SCANNING- You can scan from the flatbed or the auto feeder in either legal or letter size. You can either send the document as an e-mail directly from the machine or send it directly to your computer. Sounds great, unfortunately it won't do all of these things without being set up first.
Scanning direct to e-mail on this machine is my favorite feature, but it was also the hardest damn thing to initially set up. The network scanning feature (scan to your computer instead of e-mail direct from the machine) was much easier to setup.
SCANNING, TWO DIFFERENT WAYS--
SCANNING TO YOUR COMPUTER VIA THE NETWORK- This function requires the installation of software and it also requires your computer to be on when you are scanning. I found this feature reasonably easy to setup. You push scan, network scan, and then select a destination for the scan on your computer... such as Adobe Acrobat, or particular folders you setup. The scan then magically launches the application on your computer and the document is right in front of you ready to be e-mailed or manipulated.
BUT, each network scan destination can only handle one setup. That means the paper size, resolution and color/BW settings are written in stone for each preset. Which drove me crazy because the only application I use is Acrobat. I got around this by setting up seperate preset folders for the type of scan I was doing, like "Color Legal" "B/W Letter". The good part about doing this is that I don't have to hunt for the file regardless of what folder it goes to because Acrobat automatically launches with the scan open on the screen. From there I usually e-mail or save it where I want it to go.
SCAN DIRECTLY TO E-MAIL FROM THE MACHINE- The direct "scan to e-mail" function was the hardest thing to setup. You have to have an actual POP e-mail address for your scanner, which is how it sends PDFs or JPGs of TIF files directly from the box. Getting an e-mail account setup is simple enough, but the control panel won't recognize the servers by name, for example standard pop mail server names list POP.GMAIL.COM. Instead you have to actually convert the server names into IP addresses (I found a website somewhere that did this) and insert that IP address into the control panel.
Once setup, the scan-to-email function works just as you'd expect. But it requires way too many key strokes on the machine to actually send the document. "Are you sure, Are you really sure, Are you really really sure?" (not exact quotes, but you get the idea)
I'm in my late-twenties with a background in the tech field, yet programming this direct-to-email function had me cussing and pulling my hair out. I imagine most people will setup the network scanning application and stop there. The network scanning application is actually a lot more versitile than the direct scan-to-email, even though it requires you to have your computer turned on. But using the network scanning the document just appears, then you can forward it to whatever e-mail you want via your computer (and keep your hair).OVERALL, I'll give it 4 stars. Revolutionary product, not quite all the bugs shaken out.
PROS:
Very quiet for a Color Laser- Color Laser machines generally sounds like jets taking off, but this unit isn't so bad. Its not silent, but not bad.
Easy setup out of the box for color laser copying and faxing.
Easy setup of printer drivers for printing through the network.
Only machine I found with color laser printing, an auto-document feeder and flatbed and robust scanning features.
CONS:
Small LCD Display with no backlight- No big deal if the room is well lit, but if its dark you can't see what you are doing.
Direct-to-Email Scanning feature is not worth the trouble it takes to configure. (Use the included Network Scanning software instead, you have to have your computer turned on but it is much easier!)One good firmware or software update would solve all of my cons, except the LCD display. But, overall I'm happy with my purchase.

This is my second, more advanced model of this printer. I loved the first one based on the exceptional, US-based telephone customer service that always answer quickly and are knowledgeable (not reading from a script) about their printers.
This printer puts out perfect, color pages and would recommend it to anyone. It is quick, has many great features, compact for a 4-function and one of the best features is that it shows how much toner is left rather than left to quessing and replacing toner before it is actually out.

This is a VERY, VERY, VERY slow machine for coping. The copy speed is 1.2 cpm for color and 2.5 cpm for b/w. I would rather pay more to get another brand of Print/Copy/Scan/Fax if I knew the speed performance before I bought it. If you don't need the fax function, there are some other cheaper machines that work faster than this one.

Samsung SCX-4216 Flatbed Laser Multifunction Review

Samsung SCX-4216 Flatbed Laser Multifunction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this for past year. Use it for home use. Use it as fax, scanner, printer and copier. Satisfied with all those functions.
- Simple to use.
- The auto sheet feeder is very useful.
- Software is good also.
- Also, the scanner works well. I scan in documents mostly and it works well. No problems with scanning magazines or newspapers. As for scanning color photos, the detail is there, but the color saturation wasn't perfect. What I mean is that when scanning a color photo with some dark areas in a photo with high contrast areas, I was unable to make it so that the dark areas came out clearly. Perhaps I have't tried it thoroughly. I wasn't too concerned about it, so haven't spent much time tweaking it.
- Print quality is good. Of course, the print quality from more expensive HP printers I use at office has better print qualities. But for everyday home use, this is more than sufficient.Bottom line: I would buy this printer again. Good quality and value.

A flatbed laser multi-function from Samsung, the SCX-4216 consolidates important office functions into one unit, saving on both space and money. Designed with home office and small business users in mind, the SCX-4216 can scan, copy, fax, and print, and has a number of useful, time-saving extras.
A maximum optical resolution of 600 x 600 dpi (scan, print, and copy) can be enhanced up to 4,800 x 4,800 dpi when scanning, while 256 levels of halftone and 24-bit color depth produce high-quality, accurate scans suitable for a wide range of applications (scanning function not available for Macintosh systems). Print speeds are as fast as 17 ppm for letter-sized documents, with copy speeds of up to 17 cpm and scan speeds of around 25 seconds (depends on the document).
A multi-copy capability of up to 99 pages provides a convenient way to copy multi-page documents, while one touch scan-to-web, image, OCR, fax, and e-mail buttons offer a quick and easy way to perform these often-used functions. The fax machine has a 33.6Kbps modem, with fax speeds of up to 5 seconds per page. An automatic document feeder lets you easily fax multiple pages, and a broadcasting feature lets you send a single fax to as many as 109 locations.
A 250-sheet input tray is standard, as is a 150-sheet output tray and a single sheet bypass input. The SCX-4216 has an 18.7-by-17.2-inch footprint and connects to the host computer via either its USB or parallel ports. PC and Mac compatible, the unit also comes backed with a three year parts and labor warranty.

Brother DCP-9045CDN Color Laser Copier and Printer with Built-in Ethernet Network Interface and Duplex Review

Brother DCP-9045CDN Color Laser Copier and Printer with Built-in Ethernet Network Interface and Duplex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Brother DCP-9045CDN (the listed model number was incorrectly stated as DCP-9045CDW at the time of this writing) is a very well designed color laser printer/scanner/copier with impressive built-in networking and duplex capabilities.
First, it performs very nicely as a network color laser printer. It uses four toner cartridges (black, yellow, cyan, & magenta) that are easily accessed via a simple sliding drawer at the front of the unit. The toner cartridges are available in standard-capacity and high-capacity. While it is a little disappointing that the machine ships with the standard-capacity cartridges, this seems to be the 'norm' in the printer industry. However, I recommend purchasing the high-capacity cartridges when it is time to replenish your supplies, since they are a better value.
The machine comes with a 250-sheet standard paper tray as well as a 50-sheet "Multi-purpose" paper tray that folds down from the front of the unit. Many printers that we have used in the past also had one of these "multi-purpose"-type trays, but they usually amounted to nothing more than a single sheet manual feeder or an envelope feeder; we like the fact that this one holds 50 sheets and can actually be used as a second paper tray. We also purchased the optional 500-sheet paper tray so that we can have plain paper, letterhead, and labels loaded at the same time. The unit can use legal size paper in addition to letter size.
We really love the built-in duplex feature, and it is one of the main reasons that we purchased this model, as it saves us a ton on paper costs. We found that the prices of machines with built-in duplex capabilities (especially color models) were typically substantially higher than machines without duplex, and, initially, we didn't think we could afford a color laser with duplex. However, the 9045CDN was surprisingly within our budget.
As for network printing, this machine has very robust network support. It supports TCP/IP v4 as well as TCP/IP v6, which means its network capabilities should be about as future-proof as possible. The 9045CDN supports peer-to-peer type networks as well as server-based networks, and the included software and setup guide make it very easy to setup the unit to work with either type of network. The machine includes drivers for Windows 2000, Windows XP (32-bit & 64-bit), Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 (32-bit & 64-bit), and Mac OS X 10.2.4 (or greater.)
Second, this machine not only scans, but it is actually a network scanner. We looked at several other network printers that had scanning capabilities, but most of them could only scan to a single computer through a USB cable - their network capabilities were limited to printing only. However, the 9045CDN can scan directly to any computer that is attached to our network! In addition, it can scan directly to an FTP server on the network or on the Internet. The automatic document feeder is very handy and this machine will even perform duplex scanning and copying! The scanner glass is large enough for legal size paper; however, the automatic feeder only supports up to letter size paper, so legal size documents must be scanned or copied one at a time.
Beyond network printing and scanning, the 9045CDN, of course, has the obligatory USB port on the rear so that you can attach the machine directly to a single computer rather than to a network. There are also several nice features that allow you to use the machine without even having to boot up any computers. For instance, you can print directly from or scan directly to a USB memory key (i.e. flash drive, etc.); just plug your flash drive into the USB port on the front of the machine, and print your documents and pictures that are stored on the flash drive. You can also attach a PictBridge compatible camera to the machine and print your photos without a computer. The machine also works great as a standalone color copier.
We were able to replace two non-network monochrome laser printers, a color inkjet multifunction printer/scanner, and a copier with one 9045CDN. For most of our printing/copying we use the 9045CDN in black and white mode, but when we need color it is there, and it is substantially less expensive per page to print in color than the color inkjet printer that this unit replaced. We are very pleased with this unit.

HP CM1312NFI Color LaserJet Printer Review

HP CM1312NFI Color LaserJet Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is NOT in the same class as the much more expensive 3500 series color MFPs, and it is not supposed to be. At a cost of 1/5th the bigger printers, you need to lower your expectations, but you still get a lot of printer for the money. I've had many inkjet printers and installed many color and BW laser printers. The first laser printer I used was an Apple LaserWriter in about 1987, so my experience with these devices is quite extensive. I have this installed in a home office networked via a simple wireless router and print/scan with XP, Vista, and Win7-64.
Positives:
+ Much faster and sharper printing than even high-quality inkjets when printing typical office documents
+ Prints evenly and consistently even large areas of highly saturated color on plain paper, unlike the banded printing from inkjets on plain paper
+ Easy to install on XP, Vista, and Win7 64 as both a USB and network printer
+ Quiet
+ Sheetfeeder is convenient and reliable
+ Prints at the same speed and quality regardless of how long it sits idle or off, unlike an inkjet printer that often needs cartridges replaced or cleaned after sitting idle for a couple of weeks.
+ Doesn't spew gobs of ink on paper at random intervals, which many inkjets do, especially after they've been sitting idle for some time
+ EXCELLENT print output - very sharp even at small print sizes and fine lines
Negatives:
- I have the same problems as others when scanning using the sheetfeeder: Scans always come out as 8.5 x 14.
- Low paper capacity. Why doesn't EVERY printer come with a 500 sheet bin? Do manufacturers really save any money by making the smaller bin?
- Manual feed is not easy to use. Basically, you need to pull out the drawer and put what you want printed in the regular drawer.
- Scanning from front panel isn't working for me, which should be easy to do. Perhaps this is the problem others indicate when they say it is hard to set up. Scanning is fine when you start it from the computer.
- Won't email without talking to a computer. I really like that feature in the more expensive models, and it shouldn't be that difficult to implement.
- Wont' print truly photo-quality as well as a photo inkjet, but the prints on photo paper are still VERY good.
- Do I REALLY need a THREE HUNDRED megabyte package of drivers and software just to print? How about a light-weight software option HP? Better yet, how about building the drivers into the printer's built-in web server so that I don't have to get those monster packages from the Internet? Why can't I manage ALL settings from the built-in web pages?
-+ I wasn't satisfied with the default scan settings, but after tweaking to boost the image quality, I am happy with the scan quality and speed.
Regarding the price of prints: Although a set of cartridges sets you back about 260 bucks, that will not get you anywhere near the $1.00+ price per page others talk about. My conservative estimate at cost is about $0.15/page in color including paper, less in B/W. If you force B/W printing for most output, you will be closer to $0.04/page. Having spent a ton of money on ink cartridges for inkjets, only to waste much of the ink on cleaning and reprints when gobs of ink land on my output, I think the overall cost of ownership will be close to even or better when compared to a typical inkjet. Counting the cost of time and frustration in the cost of using an inkjet will further weigh the cost per print in favor of the CM1312nfi.
Some other "negative" points are speed, lack of duplex scanning/printing, and some other bells and whistles mentioned in other reviews. I don't count these negative points against this printer since these are features that you really can't expect in this price class. I looked long and hard at the HP CM2320, but the much higher cost of entry didn't seem to pay off for me. Including a set of cartridges, the 1312 costs 30-50% less than the 2320.
I compared this printer to Brother and Samsung MFPs at a local office supply store. The output quality, speed, and overall build quality are significantly higher than similarly priced competitors. The output quality of a color brochure copied on each of the brands is what sold me on the HP - the CM1312 output is MUCH better than the other brands. I also expect to be able to service and purchase supplies for an HP long after Samsung and Brother are forgotten about.
I'd give this printer a solid 4 stars if I could get the scanning from the front panel and the auto page size recognition to work. I won't count things against this printer that it really isn't designed to handle, like true photo quality and high speed. Anticipating being able to work out the bugs with scanning and page size, I'll give this a 3.5 and round up to 4 stars.

Brother MFC-5840CN Network Color Inkjet Multifunction Printer with Photo Capture Center Review

Brother MFC-5840CN Network Color Inkjet Multifunction Printer with Photo Capture Center
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I went shoping for a new printer a few months ago, originally shopping for a color injet (NOT All-In-One) for my start-up business. I wanted to be able to be able to give my cliets color prints of simple things like invoices, diagrams, or product photos.
When I got to the store, I came accross the MFC-5840CN by Brother and was amazed by the number of features for under $200. I had a Lexmark X85 I was replacing and that thing was a pile of junk, and made me cautious of All-In-Ones. After a few days of online research I decided to buy the Brother (my first Brother product) printer and let me say this think is awesome!
For a printer it does a good job, with good B&W as well as color prints. Now I have not tried photo paper, but it prints better then I expected and seems good (I'm not a photographer- I just want some color in my documents!). I REALLY like the fact that it has built-in 10/100Tx networking as well because I do have a few computers as well as a wireless laptop I use it from (BOTH PC and Mac).
As a Fax machine the MFC once again does a good job. I was suprised that the machine supports the "Distinctive Ring" feature and has not failed once to pick up my distinctive ring number I use as a fax line. It also has not once picked up my regular voice ringer. I can tell the fax machine as well as copier which paper tray to use as well, which is cool. I very much like the auto-feeder it makes everything that is more then one page that much easier to copy and fax.
I have used the fax-from-pc and that works great too. From wired and wireless computers around my house I can send faxes, print, and access the memory card slots!
In conclusion I must say that this is a excelent printer, especially considering the price. I have also bought two for some clients who like it very much with no problems so far. I hope this helps you!

Samsung Color Multifunction Laser Printer (CLX-3175FW) Review

Samsung Color Multifunction Laser Printer (CLX-3175FW)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a nice guy. I have patience. Customer service is inherently frustrating, I'm okay with that. Things take time. Things break. I'm okay with that too. But this is OFF THE !@#$% SCALES OF BEING OKAY.
1. My printer broke. Wouldn't scan or copy, just print.
2. I call customer service. I describe the problem. They said they'd send a replacement part and a guy would come fix it. Weird, for a $300 printer, but whatever.
3. The printer guy comes. Says they sent the wrong part. Reorders the part.
4. Two weeks go by. I call Samsung. The part is on INDEFINITE BACKORDER. I was not told. I talk to "Executive Customer Service", they say that they can just send another part that works just as well. WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST SEND THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE?
5. The printer guy comes back. Installs the part, it doesn't work. He says that he charges $400/hour. That means Samsung has already paid for two replacement parts + shipping and about $1200 in repairs to NOT fix my broken $300 printer. Genius. He marks it "unrepairable". I call Samsung, they say they're going to call me when his report goes through their system.
6. A week later. They never called me, so I call Samsung. They say they'll finally send me a new printer. GREAT!! FINALLY!!!
7. ...wait. They're not sending me a new printer. They're sending me a new unit, but I have to keep the toner, the accessories, and I have to pull out the "imaging unit" and put it in a box because if I expose it to light, the whole thing is destroyed and my printer is worthless. No matter that I don't know what the part looks like, I should be able to pull it out in the dark and put it in the conveniently sized light-proof box I don't have. Great. I ask for an email instruction or checklist so I can make sure to take out all the right parts. The Samsung tech support guy says "we don't have email." Really? Great move. A tech support department without email. Perfect.
8. Nope...not over yet. They aren't sending ME the printer. It's getting sent to my local UPS store. I now have to hope I pull out all the right parts to my broken printer in the dark, put them in a box so the "imaging unit" doesn't break, go to the UPS store, pick up the new one, and hope that I can put it all back together at my house and that I haven't left a part in the old printer because I'm supposed to take out the parts that were on a list that they wouldn't give me.
9. I call the UPS store that Samsung tells me about. They have no idea what I'm talking about and have never had a Samsung printer sent to them, ever.
[...] YOU SAMSUNG!!!!
Your crappy Epson printer breaks, they send you a new one for free, you don't even have to send the old one back. THAT'S customer service. I will never buy another Samsung product, just to not have to deal with this moronic process again.

Laserjet M3035XS Mfp Mono Laser P/s/c/f Fb Adf 1200DPI 256MB Review

Laserjet M3035XS Mfp Mono Laser P/s/c/f Fb Adf 1200DPI 256MB

Bought this in Feb.2007. Features were great. Scan to network (and PDF build) were the main reason for buying this. Fax was excellent. Jams in the doc feeder were more common than should be for something over $2,000 in price.
After the 1-year warranty expired, a cheap rubber belt in the document feeder broke, which stopped the entire printer from functioning. That cost $400, because they won't sell the belt, and the authorized service tech will not do it. You have to buy an entire document feeder assembly, pay for the installation, then the installer takes the old one away.
Now, the printer crashed in the middle of copying. The firmware was trashed and cannot be re-loaded. Wasted 2 hours with HP tech support (which costs $25 for an online chat session). Went through the same procedures I already spent 1/2 hour doing. I kept having to correct the HP rep and repeating steps.
This board replacement will cost $629. But, at least I get my $25 "chat fee" returned. Whoopee. They won't even refer it to our local authorized HP shop that's a mile down the street. They're sending an independent tech. What great business.
If you are going to buy this printer, buy the extended service pack from HP. You will definitely need it.
Started the "chat" at 3:42pm. Ended at 6:11pm. Funny, at the beginning there was a pop-up request for a satisfaction survey. Now that the session has ended...there's no survey.
I'm usually a big HP fan. Their output is never the prettiest, but the machines keep working for years and years, even after heavy use and infrequent preventative maintenance.
Seems like their quality has gone seriously downhill. Just replaced two identical JetDirect cards that went south. Both are three years old...one was never even used. Just sat in the printer.
I hope HP can resurrect their image. Bad techs and broken equipment just won't cut it. Especially when you pay a premium for the brand name.

HP LaserJet 3030 All-in-One Review

HP LaserJet 3030 All-in-One
Average Reviews:

In many ways I really like this all in one, it's does great copying, printing, scanning in all ways except that it often prints slightly crooked on the paper, off by a small but noticeable amount. HP tried over the phone to help me resolve this with no success. Since I have other printers, I learned to live with this until the machine died recently. HP sent me a refurbished replacement which after about a year of ownership I was happy to do, they charged $34 for a temporary warranty "uplifting", no problem with that. However, I am sorry to report that this refurbished version has the same page misalignment problem as the last one. Yes, I've checked my power supply, use HP paper and toner, etc. This is just an unfortunate and non-trivial defect for this otherwise fine printer.

Samsung SCX-4500 Monochrome Laser Multifunction Printer Review

Samsung SCX-4500 Monochrome Laser Multifunction Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This printer is smaller than I thought. It is about the size of a small desktop PC. It is rather "cool" looking printer. If you are trying to make a fashion statement with your printer, then this printer does its job.
Its small size comes with one noticeable compromise: a small paper tray that can only hold 75-100 sheets. It is not built to be a large volume printer and even infrequent use may result in filling the paper tray more than one desires. It can, however, print at a fast speed and at a good quality (600 dpi) resolution. The copier function is easy to use (press the copy button) and works reasonably well, and is good for low volume copying. I had no problems copying a 20 page document and it processed each copy in less than 5 seconds. The copy quality was on par with standard office copy machines.
The refill tray is expensive (about $70) and only prints about 2000 pages. That comes to around 3.5 cents per page. That is somewhat high.
One thing of note, this printer does not have a fax capability. So it is not all-in-one laser printer.
I recommend this printer to those who need a reasonably good laser printer/copier in a small form factor. If you need a high volume printing/copying machine which prints at a low print/cent ratio, then I would look elsewhere.

The Samsung SCX-4500 monochrome laser multifunction printer will produce fast, high-quality prints, and look good doing it. Compact, quiet, and portable, this sleek multifunction printer will print, copy, and scan, making quick work of all your office needs. With a fast performance, low noise emission, and an energy-saving design, it is the perfect solution for a home-office.
100-sheet, semi-automatic paper tray opens with the press of a button. Printing in a Flash With the push of a button, the SCX-4500 goes from Sleep Mode to printing in less than 15 seconds. With 8 MB of memory and a print speed of 16 to 17 pages per minute, you won't waste valuable time waiting for lengthy printing jobs again. At a crisp 600 X 600 dpi resolution, print outs will look good and even the smallest of text will be readable.
Copy and Scan Documents From the Same Machine The copy function works without needing the computer to be turned on and features a speed of 16 ppm in A4 (17 ppm in Letter). From a cold start, it takes 15 seconds for a first copy. The copies are at a crisp 600 x 600 dpi resolution. The SCX-4500 allows you to make from 1 to 99 copies and allows a zoom rate from 50% to 199%.
The SCX-4500 is also a TWAIN and WIA compliant flatbed scanner that features a resolution of up to 4800 x 4800 dpi (600 x 2400 optical dpi).
Conserve Valuable Desktop Space Easy on the eyes with its high-gloss black finish and cool sapphire LED lights, the SCX-4500 is a polished centerpiece for any desktop. It measures a compact 13-by-15.5-by-6.5-inches, so it frees up valuable desk space without sacrificing efficiency. A gentle touch of the printer's touch-sensitive buttons controls the power and settings and even ejects the 100-sheet paper tray.
This monochrome laser printer operates at less than 45 decibels of sound while printing. To put this in perspective, an average library operates at 40 decibels. In other words, this people-friendly printer was designed to serve you with pleasure, not annoy you with noise. With the SCX-4500, your work space just got a lot more productive and a lot quieter.
Award-Winning and Energy Star Compliant For added peace of mind this machine is Energy Star compliant, which means it helps save the environment while saving you money. (Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy promoting energy efficiency).

Here is my review for the sister model of MFC7420 (7820N), the only difference in 7820N is better scan resolution & Networking capabilities, the rest is the same, so my review should apply to MFC 7420 as well.
WoW ! This must be the best MFC out there. I have owned several canon, hp, lexmark MFC, photo printers, fax machines etc. This machine is it. All you need is this MFC & a separate photo printer. you are all set.
1. This is a laser MFC - scan(color), copy, fax, print
2. very fast for home/small office use
3. very compact - very space saving
4. Network ready - other computers on network can use all functions of this.
5. unlimited tech support. not just 1-year like HP/canon.
6. Machine feels sold & feels it will last long
7. All fax, copy, scan can be operated either from machine buttons or pc software interface.
8. installation was breeze
9. software is top notch. very intuitive
10. tested print, copy, scan & fax - AWESOME AWESOME.
11. they don't outsource cust support to india
12. only regrets: no duplex, no separate output tray, but from a compact machine like this, you can't expect output tray.
13. This MFC is clearly the winner. nothing else.
14. $50 cartride takes you upto 2,500 pages. not bad
15. Auto feeder works flawlessly
16. buy from local office depot store when they give $40 gift card with it.
17. you can connect any answering machine, so all you need is one line for phone callss & fax. this machine shows whether it is a phone call or fax. can use distinctive ring too.
18. backlit LCD menu
19. if you network with this printer, you don't need to buy USB cable
20. 32mb memory for printing, huge memory for fax.
21. super fast fax speed
22. Excellent looks.
23. DEDICATED MAC SUPPORT, although i only used it for Windows.

HP Laserjet M1319F Mfp Printer Review

HP Laserjet M1319F Mfp Printer
Average Reviews:

I had an HP Fax 1010 for my home office, and it was a trouper - always worked great. But then HP had a recall due to potential fire hazard, and offered a rebate on several of their faxes and multifunction fax/printer/scanners.
So I went for the M1391F MFP. I don't really care about printing - I've got a color duplex laser printer for that. I wanted something that would fax, copy, and scan with an auto-feed.
Here's what it's good at:
1. Scanning letter-size pages (although their Mac software could use some work).
2. Copying letter-size pages.
3. Faxing letter-size pages to U.S. recipients.
And the document feed works great.
Here's what it won't do:
1. Scan legal-sized pages
2. Ring or make any kind of noise when it gets an incoming call, from a fax machine, cell phone, or land line. Even with all the volume settings turned to high.
3. Receive an incoming fax or phone call. At all. From anywhere.
The capper tonight was that I had to fax a time-sensitive document to New Zealand, and this piece of work thinks the NZ dial tone is a busy signal and won't connect.
I tried to access HP's live chat help desk, but nobody picked up in over a half-hour. So now I'm having an extended, hours-between-installments email correspondence with Nigel from Bangalore, and he's asking me to verify the model number and what version of Windows is on the attached computer and am I using USB. Well, there is no computer attached, Nigel, I'm using this as a detached fax machine. But as someone who's written printer drivers for your own company's printers, and fax software for your competitors, I can assure you that if the attached computer is preventing this unit from receiving faxes or recognizing international dial tones, you need to look for another job.
I dug out the old 1010 and it sent the fax just fine.
This unit has a wonderful feature set. If only it worked. It's useless to me, and I'm going to have to start looking for a fax machine that works.
When I was in grad school over 20 years ago, HP sold the best lab equipment money could buy. You knew if you got an HP gas chromatograph, or infrared spectrometer, or oscilloscope, you had the highest quality available on the planet.
Now... I've bought probably a dozen HP laser printers since 1990, and never even looked at another brand, with one costing over $10,000. But after this hunk of junk, I will certainly look at alternatives in the future.
