Brother Printer MFC7860DW Wireless Monochrome Printer with Scanner, Copier & Fax Review

I have a network with both Windows (XP and 7) and Mac (10.5.8) machines on it, and was in need of a new printer. I was looking to replace a trusty IBM InfoPrint 12 which had been in use on the network (via a router with print server) for over 10 years (and only two toner cartridges). I even debated about fixing the InfoPrint, but I was not sure what it would take, and I needed a solution now. At first I was only thinking about a stand-alone laser printer, both in terms of cost and function, but then decided to look into multi-function machines as I also have an ink jet multi-function (usable only by my work machine) that I did not mind removing.
These are the criteria that I had in mind while selecting a product:
* laser print: for crispness and consumables (my ink jet seemed to drink ink, or it dried up)
* duplex: one of the items I did not like about the InfoPrint 12 is the lack of duplex
* compatibility across several OS platforms
* ability to scan via the LAN and not requiring direct USB
I was not concerned about the size of the unit, as it was going to have its own table (though it is quite compact). I was also not concerned about the fax functionality of the machine. While it is nice to have if needed, I had only used my old multi-function to fax once.
Taking these into account, I could not find anything that met them as well as the Brother MFC-7860DW. There are some higher caliber machines, but these were designed for more active use and their price reflected that. Some may think the MFC-7860DW is pricey, but there are others which are much more so. Since the MFC-7860DW are very new, I had some questions and wanted to see one in action, but I was not able to find any in stores. My main question was the software compatibility across OS platforms. A sister product from Brother (the HL-2270DW) had excellent reviews in terms of platform support, but I've been burned before on assumption, so I e-mailed Brother's pre-sales support. They confirmed that full functionality was supported for both Mac and Windows. It was time to purchase! I checked a few prices on-line and chose Amazon. Sure they were a few dollars more than the lowest but I like their delivery speed, customer support, and return policy (if needed). I also did not want to create (yet) another account for a single purchase.
The package arrived with some dents and tears in it (thanks UPS) but the printer was within a styrofoam shell and was unharmed. Unpack was a breeze, and the first function to test was copying -- looked great! Next I hooked it to an open port on my router and started software install. My Windows XP machine had some trouble with the PaperPort software. I did not have need to scan from that machine, so I just installed the printer driver and moved on. Full install on the Windows 7 machine went well. The full install on my Mac was even easier. The newness of the product insured I had the most recent versions of the software too.
Now that I have it installed, functional, and run bunch of paper through it I am glad I chose this one. Not only did it meet my main criteria as previously listed, I've come to appreciate these items too:
* a 250 page paper drawer (I do not like how other printers leave the paper exposed to collect dust)
* toner saver mode
* wired, or wireless, network capability (I chose wired due to the next item)
* super sleep mode (only available if on wired network)
* the separate toner and drum design (I think that it is good as they have different service lengths)
So, no negatives you think? If I had to choose one it would be the noise level. It is noisier than the InfoPrint 12 was, but I can live with it given the other benefits of the machine.

Brother Printer MFC7360N Monochrome Printer with Scanner, Copier & Fax and built in Networking Review

Brother Printer MFC7360N Monochrome Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax and built in Networking
Average Reviews:

The field of monochrome all-in-one AIO laser printers lags behind the more ubiquitous inkjet AIO units. I needed an economical solution for scanning and printing documents. It didnt' make sen$e to keep buying expensive ink replacements from the inkjet printer. I settled on the Brother MFC-7360N. The unit is somewhat noisy when using ADF (auto doc feeder) and acceptable when printing. Construction is plasticy but so are most printers these days.
Some other drawbacks:
- Cannot change the default directory where images are stored on your computer
- Takes about 30-min to install the drivers & sw on one computer. sooooo slowwwww
- The little display window is hard to read even at its highest contrast setting! Wow, bizarre.
- M-F (no weekend) customer support
The printer is acceptable and not too expensive. The software for Mac is quite full-featured but not robust. UI is a weak point. I learned to workaround its quirkiness. The printer is great if you just want an efficient machine at a modest price. Once you get used to the software, it will allow to be quite productive. Scan multi-page docs to create single-file PDF (had problems scanning 6 pages, insufficient RAM??) but no problem combining scanned pages later to gen PDF.

Symbol LS 2208 - Barcode scanner - handheld - 100 scan / sec - decoded - USB Review

Symbol LS 2208 - Barcode scanner - handheld - 100 scan / sec - decoded - USB

We use about 5 of these in our office. Great all around scanner. Works on even very small barcodes (couple milimeters tall). I think this is probably like the worlds most popular barcode scanner, I try to buy them used when possible, and can usually find them. Reads all popular barcode types that I know of, and with a little research can be easily adapted to scan even more obscure types. Easy to use just plug into a windows computer if you have the USB adapter.

HP ScanJet G3110 Photo Scanner - Scanner à plat - 220 x 300 mm - 4800 ppp x 9600 ppp - Hi-Speed USB Review

HP ScanJet G3110 Photo Scanner - Scanner à plat - 220 x 300 mm - 4800 ppp x 9600 ppp - Hi-Speed USB

Just bought this one today and am returning it right away.
The installation software on the CD did not work, saying that there a file called hpzrein01 has failed. Once I managed to download the 168Mb software from HP website, the problem again persisted. I've tried in two different laptops (Windows XP) and the problem was the same. In the end, I managed to just download the driver without the full software.
The scans are horribly done. I wanted to use it to scan photos but it keeps on scanning the part of the lid that has the entrance for the negatives. This means that I would have to crop the picture to get the actual photo size. Add to this that the scan was super slow, I cannot believe this product actually came out the market.
I am sorry but whoever at HP that gave the green light for this product to come out should look for another job. He would do HP (and the world) a favor.

Innovative Technology 35mm Negative and Slide Converter to PC Review

Innovative Technology 35mm Negative and Slide Converter to PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the converter to use with color slides, because my computer scanner takes 2-3 minutes for each slide, and with about 6000 slides that's just too much time.
I run Windows XP, and when I got the converter I mistakenly set it up for 64-bit Windows, when my computer is actually running 32-bit. I found out it won't work at all if you make that mistake. Once I corrected it, everything worked just fine. I did run into some difficulty with the slide tray. You have to open and close it carefully -- there are three clips (one in the middle and one on each end). If they are not all snapped shut the slide tray will get stuck. Also, be careful not to spring one of the hinges on the back of the slide tray -- that will also make it stick. In other words, the slide tray is plastic so don't treat it like it was made out of metal. I accidentally sprung one of the back hinges and the tray stuck in the device with my slides in it. I called Innovative Technologies and got complete cooperation from them. They were great!

Epson WorkForce GT-1500 B11B190011 Document Imaging Scanner (White) Review

Epson WorkForce GT-1500 B11B190011 Document Imaging Scanner (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This scanner uses LEDs as a light source and so has zero warm-up time. The paper feeding system is very fast and and handles irregular sheets and ragged corners with no trouble. The scanner itself beats the HP 5550C I've been using.
Epson's scanner interface is not to my taste but has presets for office and graphic professional scanning needs. What keeps it from getting highest marks is the abysmal customer service.
I couldn't get the twain driver to work under Windows Vista. The WIA driver did work, but doesn't support acquisition from the sheet feeder (which defeats the whole purpose of buying this scanner). Lack of sheet feeder support is a crippling blow to the usability of Paperport (which I have used for years). Epson should not be bundling software that their own product does not support.
I spent hours on the phone with three levels of Epson's technical support to no avail. They tried to pawn me off on Nuance to get Paperport support (Nuance's policy is that software bundled with hardware is supported by the manufacturer of the hardware!)
One of the technicians I spoke to did not even know that twain and WIA were different drivers. How can they possibly address my problem when they have such poor background in the product?
The answer of course, is that Epson's support is provided by a call center in India or some such place and the support people are reading canned responses off a computer screen.
The level two technicians knew nothing more that the level one technicians. After a lengthy conversation with a level three technician I was promised a resolution and a return phone call, which as you might guess, never happened.
In the end, I was left to my own devices and discovered a workaround. Scan using the Epson interface (which does support the document feeder) and set its destination directory to the main Paperport directory.
Then open Paperport and manage your documents from there. Not as good as scanning directly from within Paperport, but it gets the job done.

Epson Perfection 4490 Photo Scanner Review

Epson Perfection 4490 Photo Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this excellent scanner after much frustration with two previous purchases which failed to perform: Canon CanoScan 4200F and the HP Scanjet 4890.
The biggest problem with scanners is not the hardware, but the software.
In the case of the CanoScan 4200F (and similar 8400 and 9950 models, which use the same software), the driver utterly fails to crop slides correctly: in the default 'auto-crop' mode, it cuts off parts of the frame but when 'auto-crop' is disabled, it fails to scan slides separately, forcing you to crop each one manually. What is worse, is that the driver does not remember your settings so you have to reconfigure every detail again, every time you scan. There are many other bugs in this driver too.
The Epson 4490, in contrast, is very sensible about cropping - it allows you to manually adjust cropping, if you like, or to disable it and simply scan each slide as a separate file, capturing the entire frame. This would seem simple enough since both the Canon and Epson scanners employ plastic slide holders to fix the position of the slides in relation to the scanner so the Epson software always knows how to reliably split multiple slides without cropping, whereas the Canon software simply gives up.
Another area where scanner software often fails is in the installation. The Epson installation procedure worked perfectly and did not even require a reboot to begin scanning. The HP 4890 installation was a complete disaster: the giant 'easy install' poster included with the scanner contradicted the installer on when to plug in the scanner: instructions explicitly said to connect the scanner prior to installing the driver, but when I actually ran the installer, it failed to connect and Windows failed to ever recognize the new hardware, even though the installer reported that I could connect the scanner later - which was not true. Even after uninstalling and re-installing and rebooting the HP driver (which took about 40 minutes), although the the scanner appeared to be recognized by Windows and was 'connected', the driver would simply hang forever when attempting to scan.
I recount this detail about the HP scanner because it is positioned very close to the Epson 4490 in terms of price and features, yet is completely unusable. In this regard, another important consideration is technical support: in the case of HP, phone support is strongly discouraged and hard to find - even if you do manage to find the phone numbers, the quality of HP support staff is abysmal, in my experience. Epson, in contrast, publishes the tech support phone numbers prominently on the instructions included with the scanner. Perhaps, Epson can more easily afford to divulge these phone numbers since products that work well require very little tech support. This made me feel quite confident with the Epson product.
Now the big payoff - scanning!
The quality of images you get is directly related to the ease of use in configuring the scanning software. Although the Epson software is not perfect, it is quite usable and powerful. It does a reasonable job of retaining configuration settings and the advanced features of 'dust removal' and 'digital ICE' image correction is very impressive.
The flaws in the software include the following.
1. The ability to 'save' settings is spotty: you cannot assign a name to saved settings; saved settings only configure half of the parameters, prior to preview - you cannot configure use of 'dust removal', 'digital ICE' etc but must manually assign these options on each scan.
2. The prefix used in assigning filenames to scanned images does not allow the valid windows filename character, '.'
3. 'Target size' parameter cannot be saved. Workaround is to use the image 'Resolution' parameter instead (resolution=2400 can be saved and is equivalent to resolution=300, target size=800%, for example).
I have only tested this scanner in scanning color slides so far.
