Visioneer OneTouch 8600 Flatbed Scanner Review

Visioneer OneTouch 8600 Flatbed Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Visioneer 8600 proved difficult to install. I had The Visioneer 5300 and liked it very much but after installing the 8600 I wished I had tried the Epson 1200. First the system crashed and I rebooted everything seemed fine until I installed the MGI Photo Suite. It cause my program Second chance to crash and refuse to enter after rebooting. After I took of MGI Photo Suite it worked just fine. I am now downloading updates for both the 8600 driver and MGI Photo suite. I hope it corrects the problem. After scanning my first image I didn't notice any difference in scan quality over my 5300 Visioneer. However the 8600 was much faster probably 3 times as fast. Now if I can just get the rest of the software to work I can tell you how it all runs as a unit.

The Visioneer OneTouch 8600 scanner is designed with personal use and small home-business scanning in mind. Small and compact, easy to set and operate, the 8600 features an optimal 600 x 1,200 dpi optical resolution (2,400 dpi enhanced). The parallel or USB interface permits virtual plug-and-play ease, so you can be on your way to scanning crisp black text, consistently reliable color, and photo-realistic scanning in no time.
The OneTouch 8600 single-pass scanner with 36-bit color depth has an 8.5-by-11.69-inch scanning area. Five one-touch buttons allow you to fax, copy, e-mail, or publish documents with a single touch. The optical character recognition (OCR) program is a package component, allowing you to scan text for speedy editing. Also in the software bundle is PaperPort Deluxe, which scans directly to network drives for sharing documents and images within work groups. MGI PhotoSuite II SE supports modification of images so you can touch up, organize, create, show, and share photos.
If you're short on counter space, the OneTouch 8600 is just under 17 by 12 by 4 inches, so it moves easily to a shelf or closet for storing until needed again. The OneTouch 8600 comes with PaperPort Deluxe, TextBridge Pro 8 OCR, MGI PhotoSuite II SE, WebPublisher Link, PictureWorks PhotoEnhancer, Internet Explorer 4.01, and Adobe Acrobat Reader. With all this software and one-step setup, this scanner couldn't be more practical for PC owners. --Barbara Price

Fujitsu FI-5120C Scanner Review

Fujitsu FI-5120C Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent scanner and the farthest thing from the functionality of a flat bed scanner. The first thing you will notice is the speed you can scan multiple pages. I am using 400dpi (BW) and the speed is awesome. At lower resolutions, it may take longer to shred your documents than scan them. The unit is very compact, much smaller than the pictures make it appear on the web. I have had this scanner for almost a month and a half, and put two full banker boxes of documents through it with absolutely no problems. The staples take longer to remove than the scanning documents. Stapled pages do cause it to jam, so you will have to prep your documents before scanning them. The USB connection is convenient because its really easy to unplug it and put it out of the way when you're done scanning. The Scandall software is a little less slick than say Adobe products, but it is very reliable and easy to use. It comes with Adobe Acrobat (STD) which is perfect for me as I am converting all of my paper files to PDF. I highly recommend PDF format to anyone scanning mass files because it is essentially digital paper that can be read on almost any computer. I use my computer more than 10 hours a day for all kinds of tasks, and very few computing devices have exceeded my expectations as this scanner has. Getting rid of the constant piles of paper without losing what is on them has transformed my workflow.

Microtek ScanMaker 4800 Scanner Review

Microtek ScanMaker 4800 Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was thoroughly impressed with this scanner upon taking it out of the box. Although it is bulky compared to the popular Canon flatbeds (670U, 676U) this model was surprisingly economical with desktop space. The exterior shell is nice and has a metallic shine to it. Simple five button layout. All in all, not a bad looking machine.
As with all other USB products I own, the installation was EXTREMELY easy, and the concise manual is written in plain English. Just as important, the Windows 2000 TWAIN drivers are very stable. Running ScanWizard 5 and importing to Photoshop 6 is very painless and simple.
Scans are pretty fast with 96-300 DPI resolution, but once I reach 600, it becomes a tortoise-like drag. I do a lot of scanning of magazine pages in full-color, and I wasn't impressed with the clarity until I reached 1200 DPI (although the maximum interpolation DPI goes as high as 9600). However, because my preferences for professional quality photos are high, most consumers shouldn't worry, especially if you're only using this scanner for web graphics and family photos. Black and whites and web graphics were very fast to scan, and I was impressed with the results. I'm sure most people won't need to go beyond 300 DPI anyway, because that's the best resolution for printing.
I stick with Adobe Photoshop 6, but the included software (Adobe PhotoDeluxe) is a trimmed-down version of essentially the same stuff. The ABYY fine reader program is pretty good with OCR but the Ulead Photo Explorer SE is the best program included, making organization of my scans very painless. Furthermore, to clarify another review, the 35mm Light Lid IS included for scanning film, although I haven't tried it myself yet.
As for the cons, the most disturbing thing is that there is no power button! The only way to turn it off is to unplug it, although there is a power-saving mode. Secondly, size does matter and I do envy the Canon owners who get a much sleeker model that is literally three times thinner. Another thing to note is that support is only available for 30 days. After that, you have to pay for the call. Fortunately, I haven't had to question anything yet, and that's always a good thing.
In summary, I say the buck stops here for scanner buyers. Do your research to confirm you need 48-bit color (most people don't, and actually the human eye can't perceive beyond 32-bit), and have the desktop space. The software, extra features and installation are a steal..., and there aren't any extra hassles to deal with either.

Microtek ScanMaker S400 Flatbed Scanner Review

Microtek ScanMaker S400 Flatbed Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This scanner is good and bad at the same time. It is horribly slow, but I'm using the pictures I'm scanning for a slideshow of pictures throughout my life at my Bar Mitzvah party, and the quality of the pictures are very good.
Be warned, scanning negatives on this scanner requires very high resoulution (but I think that this is the way with all scanners I'm not sure), and it takes a VERY VERY long time to scan. It took ten to twenty minutes depending on the settings for ONE PICTURE. They turned out in good quality, but I was highly dissatisfied with the time it took.
Overall, this scanner is pretty good. But if you are a person that needs pics in a hurry, this is not for you. But if you are creating a slideshow (like me) and have time for it, this scanner is a very good choice.

Canon CanoScan LiDE 20 Scanner Review

Canon CanoScan LiDE 20 Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This scanner is extremely easy to install and set up. You'll be scanning photos within about 10 minutes of getting it out of the box. Its also great that it draws its power through the USB chord as its just one less thing you need to worry about plugging in somewhere. The price for the scanner is hard to beat and with Amazon's free shipping, this is about the most affordable scanner out there. Its slim design and light weight is also a plus. So far I have run into only one draw back and that is its very limited depth of field. You cannot put anything with any dimension on the scanner and expect decent results. If the object is not touching the glass, the scanner cannot focus on the object and capture detail. If you're simply looking for a scanner that can be used to archieve photos or artwork, this is a great choice. The included software has enough options to fine tune control but I've been quite happy with the results using the software's default settings. I also scan directly into Photoshop where I can further enhance the results if need be. Its important to note that this scanner is plenty powerful for the average home user. 300+ DPI resolution is more than enough to scan a photo and capture just TONS of detail. If you're not a professional working in print theres just no need for a scanner that will capture 2400 dpi. So don't go looking at other higher priced scanners with super high resolution thinking higher is better. Chances are you will NEVER find a need to scan something in such high detail.
SUMMARY:

- Unbeatable price
- Easy set-up
- USB serves as power chord
- light weight and small so its easy to move
- decent surface area / bed size
- Good resolution for the average home user
- Great results with photos or artwork
- Easy to use scanning software with decent user options
- Limited depth of field, not good for 3D objects.

This scanner is great for 11x17 scans. I'm a textile designer and need to scan large fabric prints and this scanner, for the price, is awesome!
The functions are easy and scanning time is faster than I thought. I used to have a HP scanner and that took forever...not to mention the warm up time. But, this scanner has a relatively quick warm up and scanning time.
The only reason I gave it a 4 star instead of 5 is because there is a little 1/4" fish bowl effect at the edges of the scans. But, I have to piece together prints anyways, so it's not that big of a deal. For the price, it's still well worth it.

Epson Perfection 1660 Photo Scanner Review

Epson Perfection 1660 Photo Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased both the 2400 and the 1660 scanners to compare thier
results.I previously tried and returned the Microtek 4900 and the 4850, both had an acceptable quality for photo scanning ( though they were both a little undersaturated and soft)but I had problems with both not being able to go into standby mode, the light would always remain on even when the software said it should be out. Also the scanner button program when loading would never be able able to locate the scanner and was constantly running in the background.Enough said steer away from them.
Now on to the quality products.
I did some very extensive testing head to head on both units using various color test charts, black and white resolution charts and many detailed photos of various sizes.I then tried scanning them at different resolutions/dpi. After repeating the test numerous times my conclusions are, even though the 2400 can scan at higher resolutions 2400x4800 which should be better for scanning slides and negatives than the 1660's lower 1600x3200 resolution, the 1660 scanner had a more vivid, slightly sharper scans when comparing them with the 2400's scans.
These results were equally noticable both on screen and in their printouts.(I am using the HP Photosmart 7150 printer which I reviewed also)
So, unless you do need the higher resolutions of the 2400 scanner(which still gives good results)along with it's Packaged Adobe Photoshop Elements 1.1,you would be better of saving yourself the $$ and purchase the 1660 instead.
These results were substantiated by numerous other people even including the Epson Rep which I met at Best Buy who had a chance to compare my printouts of the scans. She suggested to contact Epson's Tech Staff to find out why this is so.Buy the way I am a Computer Tech myself, and am a perfectionist when purchasing new equipment.

Epson GT-15000 Professional Scanner Review

Epson GT-15000 Professional Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received my 15000 two days ago, and set-up took briefly about five minutes. The only difficulty I had was finding where to place it in my crowded studio. It fit perfectly on a microwave stand with casters, close enough to connect to my CPU, but the advantage is that I can move it if needed. I got this scanner because my smaller Epson 3490 has only an 8.5 X 11 bed, and I was weary of stitching two halves of a larger object back together in PhotoShop. That's not difficult, but each half needs color correction to mate and sometimes there are irregularities which need fixing.
My first scan with the GT-15000 was of an 11 X 17 piece of black & white art of mine, and it turned out beautifully crisp and sharp. I plan to use my 15000 to primarily scan my black & white illustrative art for publishing, and so far it looks to do that job with ease. I highly recommend this Epson to those needing a large bed scanner.

I thought the scanner was great, but the lamp went out just after 1 year after I bought it. So now all my scans have a rainbow line from top to bottom. Microtek's extent of technical support is reinstall the drivers, if that doesn't work you have to return it so we can repair it, because there are no authorized repair people out there, but us. They will not sell me the lamp, because they need to repair it themselves (they want the labor dollars). So, after I paid $1,400 for this thing a year ago I am going to have to pay another $200-300 for repair and shipping both ways.

Xerox DocuMate 510 Review

Xerox DocuMate 510
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The unit seems to do a pretty good job as a document scanner. The rating depends on the purpose for which you purchase this scanner.
Couple items to note:
1. The unit does not come with the PaperPort Pro 9 office as advertised by Amazon. It is bundled with the Deluxe 9 software which is a less costly product.
2. The flat bed scanning of photos is not up to my expectations. It is probably ok if you're scanning photos for commercial / non-artistic reasons. I do not believe that this takes the place of a 'decent' photo scanner. I had planned to compromise on getting shorted on the Pro 9 Office software and keep this scanner. However I decided that it was not worth it given the compromise that I would also have to accept in the photo scanning.
3. The ADF always pulls slightly to the left as the pages go through. I don't know if this is a typical problem on other ADFs or not.
4. The instructions for the software both hard copy and on the web site are not thorough. A lot of trial and error is required in order to better understand the scanner options.
5. I don't like the fact that the Deluxe 9 software provides the 'preview' scan in a small sub-window. The window is too small to get any valuable 'preview' info.
6. A positive item is that Xerox has spare parts available for the ADF and scanner which may need replacing. I don't believe that this is typical for other non-commercial consumer type units.

Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB Flatbed Scanner Review

Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB Flatbed Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, you will need to figure out where you're going to put this thing: it's quite large. It measures 22" x 15". The hinged lid, though removable, requires over 2 feet of clearance above the surface that the scanner sits on.
The scanner works fine with my computer, but I confess that I have Windows 2000. Other reviewers are reporting problems with other operating systems. DO read them.
By calling the included software "El Crapamundo" and saying that "It really stinks", the previous reviewer is being much too nice. I don't think that Amazon will allow the words that I really want to use.
You get two CD ROMs: One contains the drivers, and the other is scanner-compatible graphic software from Ulead. The driver CD ROM installs a software panel with VERY limited setting options. Page 7 of their owner's booklet spells out the non-changeable default settings. They're extremely restrictive. The Ulead CD ROM installs all kinds of extra crap that runs in the background and uses up computer resources.
Your best solution is to find software on the internet that will scan your documents while giving you a much wider range of options. I'm using Photocopier Pro by Nico Cuppen Software.

Epson Expression 10000XL- Graphic Arts Scanner Review

Epson Expression 10000XL- Graphic Arts Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this recently because I wanted to upgrade from my old scanner, the Microtek 9800XL large format scanner.
I create highly detailed scratchboard line art and wanted a scanner that could capture the best possible scans of my work, which I can color digitally and send out to clients in electronic form. (I wasn't confident that my old scanner was doing the job as well as I hoped for.) Both the new and the old scanner are large format but the Epson 10000Xl is more than twice the cost of the Microtek 9800XL. Do I think the upgrade is worth it? Without a doubt.
Here is a list of cons associated with the Microtek that made me take the risk to upgrading:
1. Quirky driver. Sometimes the software could not find the installed driver and I had to restart the computer several times before it would work.
2. Microtek support is practically useless.
3. Very noisy operation
4. Scans required a lot of post production to arrive at the best capture of detail between dark and light tones. I had to scan in grayscale @ 1200dpi, make adjustment with Photoshop before converting to bitmap. With this scanner, the B&W bitmap scanning option was not capturing all the details.
The Epson, in comparison, has been a joy to own. Not only are the results much better, but the unit scans straight to B&W bitmap flawlessly, saving me time in post processing. I do need to clean the scan from unwanted specs but that is still a 50% reduction of time spent getting it optimized. The unit is also much quieter, has a slightly larger scan area, and built with superior design and parts. The lid stays open when raised at an angle whereas the Microtek was a slave to gravity.
After owning it about a month, there have been no problems to report. Since my livelihood relies on the quality of the images I produce, its a good investment and well worth the cost.

With its high 2,400 dpi scanning resolution, 48-bit internal color depth, and 3.8 optical density, images are crisp and accurate. The six-line alternated color CCD and auto focus optics system help to ensure that you get the best scans possible. Scan speeds are as high as 2.7 ms/line (at 1,200 dpi), while an optional automatic document feeder allows you to scan multiple sheets at a time. You can zoom in 1% increments anywhere from 50% to 200%.
The software bundle includes a variety of applications to help you easily achieve the best scan results possible. Titles include EPSON Scan 2.2, MonacoEZcolor with reflective IT8 Target, Photoshop Elements 2, and ABBYY FineReader Sprint OCR. The 10000XL connects to your computer via its standard USB and Firewire ports, and an optional network adapter lets you use the scanner as a network device. Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB 2400 Pro Scanner Review

Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB 2400 Pro Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been searching, tediously for a wide format scanner for over a year and the cheapest I could find that worked with Windows 7 was and an Epson for $1,047. And Honestly I couldn't afford that. I'm a freelance cartoonist who works on large sized Bristol. I gave up hope and desided to save some money to purchase that Epson in a few months.
Then out of nowhere Mustek comes out with an upgrade to their old wide format scanner. For only [...] bucks, I was in awe to see its specs and price. I ordered it right away, almost not thinking twice. The Software is a bit confusing, but if you worked with any kind of scanner in the past it isn't impossible to grow accustom to. It looks nice and isn't an eye sore as a lot of others were. But more importantly was the quality of scanning. I took out an old comic page and scanned it as soon as I had it connected and the software was installed.
The only thing I am a little disappointed in was that you can't select the DPI specifically. It has 3 settings, "Normal" "Fine" and "Very Fine. I'm assuming very fine is the 2400 DPI that was listed on its specs. Honestly that's my only complaint as of now... I had it for going on one week and I'm very pleased with it.
Once you have the software completely installed, you don't even need to open up the program when you want to scan. You simply have to open the scanners lid and PRESTO! The program automatically loads on screen. It scans pretty quickly as well, my pages are highly detailed with hatching and values, it takes roughly 30 seconds per page and all I have to do it load it into Photoshop and touch it up a little as I always to with any scan and the image is perfect. It also has some sound effects that remind me of a lot about Samsung Products, You know it has a retro sounding NES feel to it, which I personally like and think it an interesting touch.
I give this a 4/5 because... The DPI settings is a little confusing, the physical frame is a little delicate frame and because I rarely give out 5's. But I'd rather save the 700 - 1500 bucks and get this then a 5 star Epson. I haven't heard much of Mustek and this is my first product of theirs, but as far as I can see it's a very promising company which made a promising product that saved me a butt load of cash. And this Artist recommends it, especially for you comic artist out there looking for a cheap but good big boy scanner.

If you are looking for a scanner that can scan a full page of comic art in one pass then look no further. No more scanning in pieces and cutting and pasting pages together. The scan area has enough room for a full sized 11" x 17" comic page with room to spare. The extra software isn't great or bad, if you are already scanning into your chosen software you probably won't use it. Plus it's about the hardware and I am so glad I got this scanner, it has made scanning pages a lot easier.

SUMMARY
With a few caveats, this is a great little scanner. The best part is that it actually fits in my Targus computer case WITH my laptop. It weighs only 2-3 pds, and runs off USB power---no converter brick to haul around. Scans are sharp and fast. The automatic settings work very well for nearly all typical originals (old photos, business letters, receipts, etc.). Despite some shortcomings, the price and exceptional portability may make this series of scanners the choice for scanning books---because books which need to be scanned are often non-circulating items in libraries or archives.
SHORTCOMINGS
Unfortunately, the particular design of this scanner (and all other LED-based scanners) is that (unlike most fat desktop scanners) it cannot scan 3D objects. Any portion of your document or image which is not in absolute contact with the glass patten will be very blurry. The raised frame raises the edges of any original which does not fit on the glass patten, causing the edges of scans to be blurry. This is particularly a problem when scanning books. Nor can you just press down harder---that warps the glass causing blurriness elsewhere on the page, and may even jam the scanning mechanism. However, these problems may be overcome using the strategies discussed below.
The lid is non-removable, which means that you may be out-of-luck if you need to scan part of a large object. The software is multi-layered, confusing, and difficult to configure to your best use. Caveat, I've used at least three brands of scanner software, none of which were well designed. From the oddly named "MP Navigator" I suggest checking the box, "use the scanner driver" for access to the "Advanced Settings"--or better yet, scan from your graphics (photo editing) program.
NEVERTHELESS
Even though the frame is a problem, it is lower (1/16") and narrower (3/8") than most other scanners, and so, scanning books etc. is LESS of a problem than with most other scanners.
CHOOSING AMONG THE MODELS
The hardware and "Advanced Settings" portion of the scanning program of all LiDE models (at least models 90 to 210) appears to be identical. The major differences between the models is 1) improvements in the automatic scanning functions, and 2) the rated scanning speed (which is apparently software controlled). Despite the statistics, there is little practical difference in scanning speed between the models. The "slower" models are only slightly slower, but are quieter. Since I use only the "Advanced Settings" (never the automatic settings), the 110 is my preference, regardless of price. Canon CanoScan LiDE110 Color Image Scanner (4507B002)
The 210 may be best for children and other users who will never learn how to use the "Advanced Settings", since it claims to have superior automated scanning. The 210 is slightly faster. Canon CanoScan LiDE210 Color Image Scanner (4508B002)
If you plan to scan books and if you do not plan to carry the scanner around much, you might consider a Canon LiDE 700. It has 2 major advantages. The right edge is actually flush with the glass surface (hurrah!!)---albeit there is still an excessively wide margin. The lid opens 180 degrees, so you can scan portions of a large object--albeit there is still an "edge problem" for the other three edges. Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F Color Image Scanner (3297B002)
SCANNING BOOKS
It is easy to scan books which have at least ½" of margin between the print and the spine. Place the right side of the scanner at the edge of a table, so that the book hangs open at 90 degrees when placed on the scanner. Place a moderate weight on top of your original (such as a 1" thick book). If you must press down with your fingers, press at the edges of the glass area (or even better, at the corners), not the middle. If you can't quite get in tight enough, place a 1/16" sheet of stiff cardboard directly behind each page before scanning--it is a pain, but it works.
SCANNING CREASED OR FOLDED ORIGINALS
The foam "pressure pad" in the lid is a bit too soft to insure that some originals (such as stiff letters or receipts which have been folded) are pressed sufficiently flat (even with a book on top of the lid). If you notice this problem, then place a stiff cardboard sheet (or a thin book) directly on top of your original, and close the cover.
SCANNING TO A PORTABLE COMPUTER
The scanner draws power only when scanning. However, at least with my ThinkPad---scanning to a portable running on battery-power increases the scanning time by at least 50%. Plan on having your portable plugged into an AC outlet if you plan to scan more than a few pages.OTHER REVIEWER'S COMPLAINTS AND EASY SOLUTIONS
The automatic settings impose various limitations on the maximum selectable resolution, maximum file size etc.---which can all be superceded using the "Advanced Settings". Despite the instructions, it is not essential to close the lid, but it is necessary to avoid bright light from shining into the scanner. I use my dark microfiber cleaning cloth (folded) to cover any exposed portions of the glass patten when scanning in a bright room with the cover open. The maximum selectable resolution is 1200dpi. If you want to scan at, say 2400dpi, you have to type the value in manually in the resolution window. However, such scans are very slow, the files are very large, and I have found no actual improvement in resolution (detail recorded). The USB cable is nearly 5' long--longer than necessary for a portable scanner. Longer replacement cables, or extension cables are cheap,
