(More customer reviews)I've used this scanner for about 3 months. I'm an MBA student and I use it to scan all my readings and cases so I can have them handy. I've scanned a lot of paper in a short time so have come across the good and the bad.
It can scan very fast but this is only on the lowest quality setting. If you are just archiving documents then this is fine but if you're going to OCR you need to set it at the highest quality which slows it down quite a lot. Otherwise you will get a lot of OCR errors and waste a lot of time correcting them. For archiving bills and other papers I try to stick with medium scan quality.
The duplex scan with blank page removal and automatic color detection works great, saves a lot of time compared with a classmate's HP sheetfed scanner.
Papers very occasionaly double feed. Has happened like 3 or 4 times since I've had it. The software can detect misfeeds because the paper will appear to be longer than it's supposed to be. You can just pull out the offending papers, restack them and continue the scan.
Software interface is below average. It's supposed to be able to launch an external application and pass it the PDF file. I've never been able to get it to do this except with Acrobat. Can't believe this doesn't work properly. Also it's supposed to scan to jpeg but this option does not exist in my software! No big deal but makes me wonder.
Hardware quality is average. Yes, it's plastic and doesn't seem to be worth what you paid from a build quality standpoint. The output tray is very poorly integrated with the rest of the unit. The nicest thing is that its footprint is very small. Fits well on my small office desk. I think they were cheap when they designed it since there is only one roller to draw papers into the scanner. This roller is located in the middle of the feedtray. The problem I find is that it almost never ever draws in my papers completely straight. If they had used several rollers this would not happen. Most my scans come out slightly skewed. But after OCR it dissapears.
Color seems slightly darker than originals. Color saturation changes according to scan resolution too.
Card scanner software works fine the one time I used it.
Other people complain about TWAIN. Yes, this would be nice but not a deal killer for me.
Autorotates pages which is very cool and unexpected. But occasionally gets it wrong and you have to fix it manually.
Not very noisy while scanning. None of the other people in the office have complained at least and I can work while scanning without being annoyed.
The scan light blinks on and off occasionally when it's standing by, this is slightly annoying as you can see the light reflecting off the desktop.

I am offered items to review almost every day; everything from iPod cases to large format printers to hard drives to monitors to the plethora of software available on the Macintosh. Most things I turn down, as there are only so many hours in the day, and only so much space in my office for another piece of hardware. So when the opportunity came up to review the ScanSnap, I was surprised that I actually wanted to.
I had in my mind, before the unit arrived, what the ScanSnap was all about. A document scanner, not a flatbed scanner. I read it does duplex scans (both sides of a document at the same time) and outputs directly to Adobe Acrobat format. It all sounded good to me, but the proof is in the pudding.
Well, the pudding is small, as in tiny, it is fast, and it tastes really good! Okay, enough of the metaphors.
The ScanSnap is so much smaller than I had thought it would be. When I first unpacked it, I looked back in the box to make sure there was no base unit or something I did not see. This thing is about the width of a half loaf of bread, and the depth of half that! Small and tiny, just the sort of thing my desktop work area appreciates.
Size matters, yes, but not as much as functionality does. If it does not work as advertised, well, it could be the size on an iPod and I would not be impressed. Thankfully, the folks at Fujitsu have not let me down, as the ScanSnap works and works very well.
Installation is painless but does require a restart. I noticed that there is no TWAIN import functionality, but for the purpose this document scanner was created for, I don't see this as a negative. You won't use the SnapScan for importing high-res graphic files. For that, a drum or flatbed scanner would be more appropriate.
On the software side of things, SnapScan uses Adobe Acrobat Standard, which comes free in the box with the scanner. When a document is scanned it (more on that in a moment) it is saved as an Acrobat file. This is great for a number of reasons. First, Acrobat has become the default document format for transmitting and printing most documents. It is flexible, easy to use, but also powerful enough to use as an electronic workgroup and documentation online (or off) workflow. You can set passwords in Acrobat so that you can have some control over who can / can't open sensitive documents. Spotlight can also search text within PDF files, although not documents scanned with the SnapScan, as these documents are scanned as a picture, without any OCR involved.
No OCR (Onscreen Character Recognition, the process of a software application understanding text when it is scanned in and converting it to editable text and font) is probably the most disappointing aspect of the SnapScan. While it is great to be able to quickly and painlessly scan in all your important documents, there is no way to search for text within those scanned files. Also, the user is not prompted to name each file as it is scanned, so to create somewhat of an organized structure of your scanned documents, the user is forced to go back and rename files. I found doing a Save As in Acrobat worked well, after which I would delete the original scanned PDF.
The SnapScan settings give the user a good combination of options such as compression rate (the lower the compression, the greater the scan quality, Paper Size (I leave it at Automatic Detection, which works great), file format (don't like PDF? Save your scans as JPGs instead), Scanning options (quality, color mode, and scan button), Save options, and Application options in case you would rather Preview open the scan over Adobe Acrobat. All in all, most of the option a typical user would need to control the scanner.
The ScanSnap software automatically launches at start up, so there is no need to hunt and find the application to start scanning. The software and hardware is all ready to go.
The most impressive aspect to the ScanSnap has got to be the speed a document is both scanned and displayed on screen. The advertised speed is 15 pages per minute, which may not sound like much at first, but basic arithmetic will show that is four seconds for one page. And not just one side of the page, but both sides of each page! The scanner is intelligent enough to know if what you are scanning is a one or two-sided document, and acts accordingly.
One button scanning. Add the document(s) you want to scan in the feeder (50 sheets capacity) and push the big round button, and the ScanSnap takes it from there. It is so simple; the ScanSnap is the Macintosh of small office documents scanners.
I had so much fun working with the ScanSnap; I got carried away scanning every document I could find. Mortgage papers? Checks. Insurance papers? Check. Old pay-stubs? Birth certificates? Receipts? Check, check, and check. The scanner is so simple to use, and PDF's small enough (even on high quality settings) to easily archive, I feel this is the first document scanner I can use to truly move all my important papers into electronic format.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 Clr 18PPM/36IPM Dupl Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this scanner to improve the operation of my CPA office (consulting/audit practice), and to get rid of a good part of (roughly 40 crates of) files I have accumulated over my career. Before making this purchase I reviewed the CPA Computer report Accountants Guide to Going Paperless, the AICPA IT section whitepapers, I attended a few paperless workshops, and I read Amazon reviews of earlier Fujitsu products and Visioneer products. My unit serial number was #5XX, so mine is one of the first of this model sold. This review is based on only one week of experience using the S500, but I think it is better to share this information now than to wait until I have more to report.
The S500 appears to be similar to the previous model the FI5110EOX2 which has been heavily, and positively, reviewed on Amazon and also in the references listed above. Differences between the S500 and the earlier 5110 are as follows -
* Integration with ABBY OCR, so the S500 can produce searchable PDF's and other formats!!! This was a major limitation with the 5110EOX2 which could only produce graphic PDFs. The ABBY OCR is not perfect, but hopefully gets enough keywords right to make the document findable.
* One touch scan to PDF, to Word, to Excel, to Power Point, to ScanSnap Organizer (which produces searchable PDFs), and to Cardminder (for business cards).
* Inclusion of Adobe Acrobat 7.0!
* 20% improved scan speed (up to 16 pages per minute, with a 50 page feed bin), and the ability to append consecutive batches to the same PDF file. In practice I think I will often be using highest resolution (Excellent, 1200dpi/600dpicolor) mode with max compression, which is significantly slower - about 25sec/page scan time and 10sec/page OCR time on my new Compaq presario laptop. The lower resolution modes (going down to Fastest, 300dpi/150dpicolor) might be sufficient for older print documents without marks or illustrations, that do not have much value to me, that I doubt I will ever look at again but can't just toss.
* Automatic document size detection so you can feed batches of mixed size documents. (plus all the document handling features from the 5110, including reasonably good automatic handling of mixed single sided and double sided documents)
* File compression which is claimed to reduce file sizes 20-50 percent.
* A significant cash manufacturers [censored] for purchases from authorized dealers is currently available for this product through the Fujitsu website.
Here are the limitations I have seen with this scanner so far (4000 scans of documents and business cards) -
* It sometimes feeds two sheets at once, most often the first two sheets in a batch, so I will have to keep my eye on the first sheets it feeds. If the documents have page numbers it will be easy to know how many documents I have fed and compare this with the scanner count. If the documents do not have page numbers I will need to count them by hand, or keep I very close eye on the scanner throughout the scan, or just live with a very occasional missed page due to the mechanism feeding two sheets at once.
* I assume staples will damage the mechanism, and so I will have to carefully inspect all documents for staples before scanning.
* The OCR is alright but not perfect. There are frequent OCR mistakes when scanning business cards, and several mistakes per page on spreadsheets (7's sometimes become 1's, 5's sometimes become S's, 0's sometimes become O's, missing decimal points, extra junk characters etc). White text on black background and black text on grey background have poor results. Fortunately the graphic image is retained in the searchable PDF, and is also retained in Cardminder, so that even when the OCR is not perfect I can still see what the original looked like.
* If a spreadsheet had relationships between the columns, I can recalculate the relationship and compare my recalculation with the scanned information, which seems to detect almost all errors in scans to Excel.
* Scan to Word often results in a slightly different format or positioning of text than the original document.
* The scanner does not support TWAIN (a uniform driver interface for scanners), instead it has a proprietary interface. Based on my research, the proprietary interface is better than TWAIN, so if the included software meets your needs then this is not a limitation. However if you absolutely must use some 3rd party software that requires TWAIN then you should not buy this scanner!
* The PDF files produced by the system are not fully compressed, even with maximum compression selected. Running PKZIP does not increase the compression significantly, however in Adobe 7.0 I click File | Reduce File Size | For Adobe 7.0 and subsequent, and files compress perhaps by up to 80% ! This additional Adobe compression claims to have no loss of visual quality and is fast for PDFs of a few megabytes, but quite slow for huge PDFs, and seems to produce much more additional compression on high resolution scans than on low resolution scans. Why can't Fujitsu/Abby use this Adobe 7.0 super compressed mode to begin with or add it to their batch process manager? I have not figured out how to get the system to reduce this annoying extra process step.
* After installing the scanner, Outlook caused my XP system to hang three times a day with a fatal "STOP ERROR" causing a blue screen and a reboot. I called tech support, and found it very easy to reach a live person who listened to me sympathetically and had some useful troubleshooting information, but did not have an immediate fix and took me down a few false paths. Microsoft crash analysis was worse than useless and incorrectly concluded that the problem was in my graphics driver which was not the case. In the end, through trial and error, I diagnosed the problem myself. It turned out that the Blue Soleil bluetooth USB wireless networking drivers installed in my system and plugged into Outlook were incompatible with something in the S500 package, perhaps with the S500 drivers or the Adobe 7.0 Outlook plugin. Uninstalling Blue Soleil caused the problem to go away completely.
* Every now and then (2%?) of scans, when I press the green scan button or when I click continue in the scansnap manager window, the image scanning and file saving window comes up on my screen, but the feed motor never starts turning. The system appears locked up, and the only way to reliably start scanning again seems to be to disconnect and reconnect the power plug on the back of the scanner.
* When scanning paper that is rough or perforated, sometimes the ejecting page will push the previously scanned page out of its neat stack in the output pile, and in the worst case spill several pages from the output pile onto the floor! I have learned to place the scanner at the rear of a deep desk, and to set a block at the front of the desk at the front end of output pile to push back against any paper that tries to fall out.
* I was able to use the software to convert some previously scanned graphic PDFs to searchable PDF's, however the Abby manual does claim that only files produced by ScanSnap are supported (though I suppose one could always print a hardcopy and then scan it again using ScanSnap).
Despite the problems listed above, this system is helping me better communicate with my clients, and in the long term I think it will significantly reduce the clutter in my office.

Fujitsu FI-5120C Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent scanner and the farthest thing from the functionality of a flat bed scanner. The first thing you will notice is the speed you can scan multiple pages. I am using 400dpi (BW) and the speed is awesome. At lower resolutions, it may take longer to shred your documents than scan them. The unit is very compact, much smaller than the pictures make it appear on the web. I have had this scanner for almost a month and a half, and put two full banker boxes of documents through it with absolutely no problems. The staples take longer to remove than the scanning documents. Stapled pages do cause it to jam, so you will have to prep your documents before scanning them. The USB connection is convenient because its really easy to unplug it and put it out of the way when you're done scanning. The Scandall software is a little less slick than say Adobe products, but it is very reliable and easy to use. It comes with Adobe Acrobat (STD) which is perfect for me as I am converting all of my paper files to PDF. I highly recommend PDF format to anyone scanning mass files because it is essentially digital paper that can be read on almost any computer. I use my computer more than 10 hours a day for all kinds of tasks, and very few computing devices have exceeded my expectations as this scanner has. Getting rid of the constant piles of paper without losing what is on them has transformed my workflow.

Panasonic KVS2026C SCANNER 24PPM/42IPM ( KV-S2026C ) Review

(More customer reviews)We just received this scanner, and it installed instantly. It scans quickly, feeding about 2 seconds per page at 200 dpi and a little over 4 seconds per page at 400 dpi.
We've seen scanners absolutely wreck a computer system, probably due to driver problems, but we checked and did not have that problem with this scanner: the software appears to have been professionally written, though a warning pops up stating that it has not been checked for compatibility by Microsoft.
Pluses are it's fast, easy to install, and very compact: about 1/2 the footprint of an HP Laserjet 4100, but to use it you do have to pull out input and output trays that increases its footprint to about twice its size. It appears to have a very solid paper handling. After watching it work, you can tell it isn't likely to jam or misfeed.
However, the minuses are that it, like a lot of scanners, slightly skews the page, so it looks a little crooked. Most copiers will not do this, so it can't be used to replace a copier. UPDATE 11/9/09: They changed the driver to add deskewing and so as long as you use the sharpie trick below, the pages come out perfectly level.
I run a law firm and our scanning needs are pretty modest, but after seeing how quickly this unit works, we'll be scanning a lot more. I can't say I'm thrilled about the very slight page skew, which my other scanners also have (but they were 1/4 the price) and yet my copy machines don't have, but I haven't played with it fully to see if there is something we can do to correct it.
Update 5/30/06: the skew has to do with the fact that the paper guides spread apart over time as the unit is feeding pages. We put a small marking pen (like a fine tipped sharpie) between one of the moveable guides and the side of the input tray and it has stopped the skew entirely. I'd rate the unit 5 stars now. Most marking pens are slightly cone shaped, so you can put the pen in until it stops and it will hold the moveable paper guides in place. You only need to use one pen: the guides are connected.
Update 11/9/09: As noted, the skew problems are gone with the update drivers. And wow, it's still going strong nearly 1000 business days after I bought it. Never jams. We only run about 200 pages per day through it: it's rated for 4000, but the bulletproof paper handling and speed was worth buying such a heavy duty scanner. 5 years later, I'm only disappointed that Panasonic has not updated their scanners in nearly 5 years, though they did update the drivers and the new drivers give you just about every feature. You can still buy this one or the faster 2046 - twice the speed for more than twice the price. You can buy the cheaper 2025, but it is rated for a much smaller duty cycle - 1000 pages per day, and I'm a bit afraid of how it will last with people beating up on it. You might also look into the Canon 3010c, a slightly faster scanner that came out in late 2008 that appears to have a few more features, like auto delete of blank pages. It's about $300 cheaper than this one. But honestly, to have a mechanical device that has given us no trouble at all for 5 years and cost me about $1 per day of use to purchase, I'd be hard pressed to buy a different one when this one finally breaks. Keep a bottle of compressed air nearby: when it makes noise, spray the paper dust out of it and it will keep running. Clean the rollers occasionally with rubbing alcohol an q-tips.

Canon DR-2080C Color Document Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)This unit is small and compact, yet has some very nice features. I especially like the duplexing feature allowing it to scan BOTH sides in the same pass, no flipping a stack of documents over. It works from within Adobe, and Microsoft Office Imaging.
It does have a drawback, however, the drivers are not Windows XP, and it can be a bit disconcerting installing them. I finished the installation with no adverse affects (that I noticed) to my 2 laptops, and a stand alone machine.
If you travel and need a high speed scanner, I highly recommend this unit.

DS687 Duplex A6 Id Card Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this for duplex scanning of insurance cards. The calibration sheet was too big and I had to cut it down to size. The duplex only works only if you use Ambir's program - which didn't register with XP as a default scanner. Ambir's program worked but didn't seem well integrated with the OS. Also the Duplex scan produced two files (one for front, one for back) - I wanted a single file with front and back!
Unfortunately I had to use another standard scanner driver with my software and it didn't support the duplex scan (even when I selected duplex mode) - defeating the entire point of getting a duplex scanner.
I think the hardware is a nice package and seems well built, but the Dulpex software support is another story.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)I have horrible problems with technology. I buy stuff, and after 4 hours of trying to get it to do what I thought it should do, it doesn't. HP does this to me all the time.
That is why I was floored when I got the S510 working in under 20 minutes exactly as I wanted it to.
You can take a bunch of pieces of paper, scan in both sides, capture it to PDF, OCR it, make it search-able, save it to disk... all by pressing one button.
I am using the ScanSnap filing system software that comes with it. It is essentially a glorified file explorer, except that it will do text in PDF searches for you based on the directory (Or Cabinet as they call it).
I set mine to extreme compression, and full resolution, and then the auto OCR. The software warns you that it will slow down scanning, and it does. It maxes out my 2-3 year old Dell D600 with .5G of RAM laptop, but it gets the job done. I can still use the computer so it doesn't block like I have read elsewhere (maybe for the S500).
This is an upgrade to the S500. Mine was black, not sure what's up with the white ones (maybe mac?).
It comes with Adobe Acrobat 8. This allows you to delete pages, rotate them, etc.
The OCR is amazing. Out of the box, it gets a little confused with i1IlL but so do I, bump it up to the max resolution, and the OCR is flawless.
I probably won't bother with the try & buy Rack2 Filer. Google Desktop isn't essential for searching.
In the hundreds of papers that I scanned over the weekend, I may have had 3 jams which are REALLY easy to clear, and the software is pretty smart about it.
If I had a newer / heftier computer, things would go A LOT faster (not the fault of the scanner or the software though, I watched my CPU spike and slow during scanning & OCR)
This literally was one of the only pieces of gear I have taken out of the box, and had 100% functional within the hour.
My .005% gripe; Be able to tell the scanner "Yeah, don't scan the backs of these pages" rather than navigate all through the menus. But disk is cheap, and I can always delete it with Acrobat later.
I'll recommend it to my friends & customers.

Xerox DocuMate 250 Review

My Epson scanners provided a very good scan quality, and at a decent scan speed. The Epson software interface was ok, but not the greatest. Last week I decided to take a chance on this Xerox Documate 250, and I'm really glad I did. This thing rocks! I am amazed at how fast it scans stuff. And the scan quality is great. The software that comes with the scanner is really good, too. Much more user-friendly than the Epson software. Another neat feature is that this scanner will scan directly to PDF format. So no more cumbersome file conversion from JPEG's, BMP's, etc. I am seriously considering buying another Xerox Documate 250 (or another Xerox Documate model) for home and/or business use. I'm that impressed. I don't write many product reviews, so that should tell you something about this product.

Visioneer Strobe 500 Color Scanner with Duplex and ADF Review

(More customer reviews)I am often in need of scanning multiple documents, and the multi-sheet feeders of the various printers that I have had have fallen short--in a big way. They jam and you end up having to SLOWLY scan each document separately, flipping the docs over and having a separate file for each side/document. Tedious to say the least.
This product, on the other hand, is SO FAST and reliable! I was super surprised at how fast the documents not only fed through the scanner, but how quickly they processed into editable documents on the computer. The unit is quiet and smooth, and looks great in the office--not too obtrusive. (I hooked it up to a Dell PC with 12 gB of ddr3 RAM, 1tB hard drive, running multiple applications, and it didn't hang up once.)
The software included is extensive, and easy to maneuver. They come with detailed user manuals (on a CD). The unit contained all the necessary plugs and usb cables for both US and international use. You can even power the scanner via usb, so you're not stuck if you're needing it on the road for use with your laptop. Very nice!
I am really impressed with this unit. If you need to scan documents on a regular basis, and are sick of jamming, slow printers with useless software interfaces, this is for you.

Visioneer Mobility Scanner CLR 300DPI Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this for scanning black and white documents at a location where setting up my laptop and page scanner was too cumbersome. This does exactly what I need. The paper feeds almost perfect every time. Image quality is very good (300dpi). A full page scans in around 10 seconds. There are only 2 problems I have with this unit. First, the scanner timestamp seems to reset itself so the dates are no where near when I scanned the item and there doesn't seem to be any way of setting the date in any software or the unit itself. Second, when you clear the memory card or USB the filenames revert back to 1 (IMG_0001) This is a pain for me because I scan documents daily and when sorting the files into their various folders, I tend to end up with a lot of duplicate file names. All in all if you need an extremely portable unit to scan in a few single sheets of paper this is for you. If you are looking to scan large quantities of pages then I would suggest getting something with an auto-feed.

Xerox DocuMate 515 Flatbed Color Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased a Xerox Documate 515 on Feb. 26, 2010 as my old Visoneer 9450 is not compatible with Windows 7 - nor will it be. The Documate 515 was recommended as a compatible replacement. Read all the literature and ordered it. Arrived in quick order. Due to a heavy traveling schedule however, it was not installed until March 26th. I Flatbed scanned a test a page and it scanned just fine. I did not however use the ADF to scan multiple pages. I registered the product this very day - March 26th, 2010. Back to a heavy traveling schedule and the Scanner was not used again to scan even one document after its initial set-up on March 26th, until early April. I noticed that it would frequently "freeze" half way through a page. Had to turn it off and try again. Sometimes it would scan sometimes it would freeze - more often it "Froze".
Multiple page scans would freeze after the very first page. Most frustrating. Called Visioneer who recommended the scanner as a likely Visoneer 9450 replacement. They referreed me to PaperPort - manuafacture of the software used to scan my documents. They referred me to Xerox. Called Xerox on April 8th, 2010. They suggested I try connecting it to a Laptop and see if that corrected the problem. IT consultant was next scheduled for and came April 14th and we did just that, connected the USB cable to a laptop - still freezes with great regularity. Have to pull the page out of the scanner after turning it off and then on again.
Called Xerox tech support on April 14th - how long is the USB cable they asked? 10 feet I said. That is probably the problem they informed - try a 4 foot cable. At four feet the scanner has to damn near sit on top of the computer and if not on top, I have virtually no place to put the scanner anywhere near the computer. This corrected the problem completely - single sheet, multile page scans - no freezing. I informed Xerox Tech Support that my Visoneer was working just fine with a 12 foot USB cable with virtually no problems. USB 2.0 Specifications is 5 METERS I informed and that four feet is just barely over 1 METER. The requirement to use a 4 four cable was NO where in their literature and had I known this I never would have purchased this product. I was then informed that ALL Xerox Scanners require a four foot USB Cable - "might" work with a 6 foot but that's a "might" they informed.
Unacceptable - It is now April 14th and I am "Out of Warranty" for something I was never informed of - a four foot cable requirment. Nothing they could, or "would" do for me. Purchase a Xerox Sanner if you will - personally, I will never purchase another Xerox product of any kind for fear of what they don't tell me in their literature and also for their total lack of customer care.

(More customer reviews)I am used to getting so-so support for most products. I read some of the other reviews and figured that this company was a little better. I received my scanner and unpacked it today. I set it up and installed the software but it kept quitting when I'd try to scan. So I called support and got a recording that they were closed. I figured that they were closed for MLK day. Then 2 minutes later, they call me on my phone by caller ID only and ask if I had been having trouble, in accent-free English. I had not left a VM, mind you. Then he proceeds to spend the next 50 minutes with me, logs into my computer and figures out that there's a conflict with a camera driver that he removed. Then it worked perfectly. I had another question 30 minutes later about duplex scanning that I was immediately able to reach him again on and got it fixed instantly.
The scanner itself is very compact, fast and versatile. The portable part even un-docks, Transformers-style and can be taken with you in your briefcase. Over-all, it's a great product at a great price with great customer service. Kudos to these guys! (Now if it could only be made in USA!)

Epson WorkForce Pro GT-S50 Document Imaging Scanner Review

(More customer reviews)For the last year and a half, I've been using a Fujitsu S510 SnapScan page scanner, which is a natural competitor to the Epson GT-S50. So, when I was offered the chance to review the Epson, it seemed like a natural fit - somebody looking to purchase one is likely to also look at the other. (Go to Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner to read that review. It was fairly far down, on page 4, when I last looked.)
Let's look at the two scanners...
First of all, both scanners are top fed and scan both sides of a page in a single pass. They are infinitely faster than the scanners built into the "all-in one" printers and suitable for high volume scanning...the Epson is rated for 1200 pages per day.
The Epson GT-S50 comes with both TWAIN and ISIS drivers, giving it with a clear advantage in interfacing with software from other companies. Almost every program that can read from a scanner uses one or the other. The ScanSnap, on the other hand, uses its own proprietary driver, which only ties into their ScanSnap Organizer program...a program that displays small images of the scanned pages. Both scanners come with OCR programs, for converting scanned images to editable text, but, with the TWAIN driver, only the Epson directly interfaces with different programs - OmniPage Pro, Textbridge, or whatever else you prefer.
The Epson driver offers more choices in output resolution. Whereas the SnapScan has four levels - Normal (150dpi), Better (200dpi), Best (300dpi) and Excellent (600dpi) - the Epson has eight levels ranging from 75 dpi up through 600 dpi. For some strange reason, neither company's software allows you to name the output file before scanning. After scanning, you'll need to manually rename each file with something recognizable. (The default date/time stamp doesn't give you any useful information if you need to find a file a month later).
The Epson ships with software for both Macintosh and Windows systems. I've tested both versions in a mixed Windows/Mac network and they both work smoothly. The Fujitsu ScanSnap, on the other hand, comes in dedicated Mac (S510m)and Windows (S510) models. I've only used the Windows version.
Both scanners are similar in their physical shape, although the Epson looks quite a bit larger...it's about 1" longer, 2" taller and an inch or two deeper than the SnapScan. It holds 75 pages in the input slot, versus 50 in the SnapScan. The Epson has a two-line display on the front. The SnapScan only has "scan" and "power" buttons. Both units are solidly built and give the feeling that they'll last for a long time...I've used my SnapScan for 30K+ pages and it's still going strong. Both units have user replaceable pads and rollers to keep them running smoothly.
How do they operate in real life? To begin my testing, I fed the same 42 page document through each scanner. The document was complex as they come, with both text and color graphics on most pages. It was also laid out to be used in a vertical flip chart (letter-size, but bound on the short edge)...from the scanner's perspective, the back-side of each page was upside down. My theory was that a scanner that could make sense out of it could handle almost anything...
The Epson scanned my test document faster than the ScanSnap, but software processing of the scanned image took longer. The ScanSnap took 3min 10sec from the start of the scan to PDF file creation, without using text recognition; the Epson took 4min 6sec. The OCR software runs in the background on the SnapScan, but runs in the foreground on the Epson. Because of this, the SnapScan can be used to scan the next document while the text is being recognized, while the Epson remains busy until it's completely finished. My test document tied up the Epson for 12min 20sec from the time that I started the scan until the OCR finished and saved the file. My computer's no slouch, but a faster computer would obviously shorten that time. If you use an outside text recognition package, you can always run it at a later time and eliminate this time waster.
The ScanSnap features automatic rotation of upside down and landscape pages. (Everything is fed in vertically on both scanners.) The Epson doesn't...you get what you feed in. In my test document, the ScanSnap flipped the upside pages right-side up. The Epson left them upside down. Even with the upside down pages, the OCR worked fine.
The Epson can handle mixed page sizes in one scan. You can drop all your receipts in and have them scanned at once. The ScanSnap needs all the pages to be the same size in each scan...a longer page is assumed to be a misfeed and aborts the scan.
The Epson has a straight through paper path. It can handle credit card and ID Card scanning. The ScanSnap doesn't and can't. This makes the Epson perfect for a medical office where health insurance cards are always being copied.
The Epson can scan documents up to 36" long. The ScanSnap stops at legal size (14"). This is useful when you are scanning cash register receipts, but as a practical matter, I seldom run into anything else that's longer than 14"...at least not without also getting too wide for the scanner.
Using the default settings, the ScanSnap had a sharper output at 600dpi. Clicking the "unsharpen" box in the Epson software produced a scan that almost exactly matched the ScanSnap's output...why unsharpen actually sharpens is a mystery. In solid-color blocks, the Epson was clearly superior, producing a solid-color output. The ScanSnap had a lot of off-color noise that was clearly visible when enlarged.
The Epson also has the ability to drop out colors, which is useful when scanning something printed on colored paper. It would also be useful if you need to remove a red "confidential" or "top secret" stamp from a borrowed document. :)
Besides the drivers and other utility software, the Epson includes PaperPort 11 SE, which is a visual file organizer. It operates similarly to the ScanSnap Organizer. I didn't test it out...the last time I installed PaperPort 11 Pro (NOT the SE version), it messed up my computer so badly that I ended up reinstalling Windows to get rid of it. (If you have a minute to kill, go read the reviews on Amazon for PaperPort 11 Pro!) I assume that Epson's version is more reliable, but having been burned more than once, I'm not about to try any version of PaperPort ever again! Both scanners use the ABBYY FineReader software. It works nicely. The ScanSnap also includes a full version of Adobe Acrobat Standard...a $200 program if you were to go out and buy it separately.
So....which scanner would I buy? The short answer is that it depends on your application. If you're using both Macs and Windows machines, the choice is clear...the Epson works with both. Both scanners are built for years of use and each has unique features (e.g. card scanning) that point it in one direction or the other. The Fujitsu ScanSnap is designed to be a more "push the button and it goes" type of device. The Epson GT-S50 is more flexible. I like them both.
Update - August 3, 2009 - I've now had both machines running side-by-side for about five months. I now find myself almost always using the Epson instead of the ScanSnap. The reason is simple - the Epson NEVER double feeds. This may be a function of the newness of the Epson, but my Fujitsu isn't really that old, nor, at 19K pages has it seen much service. The double feeding has become a real problem...I have to carefully watch everything going through the SnapScan to make sure that it's not skipping a page. Not good.
Update #2 - November 14, 2009 - I upgraded one of my office computers to Windows 7 and the GT-S50 is working fine. There no drivers yet available for the ScanSnap S510...Fujitsu is estimating the end of December. Even their newer model, the S1500 won't have drivers for another couple of weeks.
I also need to add that I've have a less-than-satisfactory with Epson service. My GT-S50 keeps truckin' along, but another Epson scanner, a V500 Office started misfeeding after two weeks. Epson wouldn't ship me a replacement unit...their scanner service policy apparently requires that the scanner be delivered, at customer's expense, to a repair depot. That's not exactly the most customer-centric way of doing things...
Update #3 - January 27, 2010 - Fujitsu now has Windows 7 drivers available on their website. My s510 is now up and running.

(More customer reviews)Great tool. What a scanner should be. This is another world from the speed and software efficiency you have in the average scanner and All In One Printers. So I am happy to have both a AIO device and this great tool for document management.
My use:
Now all the invoices and in general, all my printed documents are converted into searchable pdf into an easy to access archive.
I can recover from a fax or a printed document and edit it in word or excel tables or iWork and save a lot of time retyping
Business cards are archived in a short time and included in my address book and so also on my iPhone.
PLUS
A single, easy to use, application manages the very fast scanning and efficient OCR conversion of printed documents outputting directly in searchable PDF, Word, Excel, email attachment, address book and VCF contacts. Also business card OCR is quiet effective and the limit is due to strange character and graphics and you can find on some more creative cards.
Compared to what you find in the AIO devices and average scanners, paper handling is superior and errors are avoided. In the case of skipped pages (Happens rarely) a sensor warns you and show you which page is missing.
CONS
Only shortcoming is that Acrobat Pro is included in version 8.0 and not the last 9.0 but I suppose that this will change soon.

(More customer reviews)My old HP scanner (actually, it wasn't that old) died a few months ago and it was time for me to get a new one. I accidently came across the predecessor to the ScanScap S1500 (the S510) last week while I was having my taxes done and was amazed at the speed and compactness of it. My tax person also gave it glowing reviews. As I wasn't aware that Fujitsu manufactured scanners, I thought I'd do a little research which led me to reviews of the S510 here on Amazon. Rather amazingly, I was very surprised to find that the S510 had so many extraordinarily high reviews (something that I don't believe I come across too often, especially with items such as scanners). One of those reviews mentioned that a new model (this one - the S1500) had just been released by Fujitsu. After some more research (it wasn't yet listed on Amazon), I found that this scanner was available and that it had many new features. As it turns out, I was the "first kid on my block" to acquire one and I'm glad I did! This machine is incredible!
The speed is absolutely blinding - an incredible 20 pages per minute but, because it scans both sides of a page at the same time, double sided documents scan at 40 PAGES PER MINUTE! Wow! As with previous models, this scanner is very small and appears to be well built: it's quite heavy for its small size and fits very nicely on my small computer desk. The scanning quality is equally spectacular - it scans up to 600 dpi in color, grayscale, and black and white and mine came with a good assortment of software (Adobe Acrobat 9, Rack2-Filer, and ABBYY FineReader). It scans documents beautifully! While I've been too busy scanning the billions of pieces of paper that have cluttered my life for years (this scanner will actually do that quickly and efficiently - something I've always just dreamed would be possible), I haven't yet tried to scan photos; I suspect that this scanner will do a good job but that another type of scanner would probably do better for archival purposes).
The only problems I've had were with Acrobat (I already have Acrobat 9 Pro on my computer) - I found that importing previously scanned documents into Rack2-filer were always listed in reverse order (ugh!) and Fujitsu tech support replicated the problem. They suggested, however, that I completely uninstall (not just repair) Acrobat and reinstall it. That did the job. BTW, I received great tech support from Fujitsu.
One interesting thing is that this scanner does not come with TWAIN drivers. Because of this, it is not possible to use it to the same extent as other scanners. Just the same, my reason for getting this scanner was to create .pdf files and this scanner does it like no other.
Overall, I'm thrilled with the Fujitsu S1500 - there is no question that it is the best one I've had (and I've had many) and is well worth the money (the S1500 is also the most expensive scanner I've ever purchased). I would recommend this to anyone who needs to scan documents.
