Epson GT-30000 Color Scanner (B106011F) Review

Epson GT-30000 Color Scanner (B106011F)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After owning several other scanners which I use for a variety of office purposes including image storage, document control, etc I found I needed one with 11 x 17 capability. Not being able to find too many choices on an internet search this was available and in my price range. When it arrived several parts had come off either during shipping or perhaps were never installed during manufacture. Whichever, I found myself becoming a scanner assembly worker. I had to get my tool kit out for the construction which took quite a bit of time. I would have just returned the unit but was told that this is a common issue with this particular scanner and I needed to get to work as soon as possible. After several hours I managed to get the pieces figured out and installed. When I powered it up for the first time the light unit flickered and smoke poured out. Now I don't know if this was part of the damage I encountered upon opening the carton or a new set of problems. I really needed to use the thing so I took the chance and loaded some documents into the feed unit and watched the results. There were dark and light places over the captured image of the document which also came through when I printed from the captured image. I guess for storage of documents for reference purposes this thing would probably do the job. But for printable image storage this was not going to do the job. I finally decided I had wasted enough time and returned the scanner for a credit. I don't think I want to take the chance of repeating the experience so I am in the process of looking for an alternative brand. I don't recommend Epson. Recalling my experience with this company, I've had other issues with their products. From strange software gliches to poor hardware build quality, Epson has produced a lot of frustration for me with this model scanner being no exception.
In short if you want a decent scanner that will work out of the box and do an adaquate job, avoid this particular product. Epson may make better products than those I've had the experience of owning. And it may just be a fluke. But for this kind of money someone should have done a better job inspecting and testing the unit before shipping.

Epson Stylus NX510 Wireless Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer (C11CA48201) Review

Epson Stylus NX510 Wireless Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer (C11CA48201)
Average Reviews:

The printer works fine for the most part. Good quality and the wireless network is a really nice feature so you can eliminate cables. I was actually fairly happy with it. The menu systems on the front panel are extremely crude and hard to navigate, but that was really my only gripe.
However, this printer has proven the most irritating design in one respect. When you reach a low ink level, the front control panel is completely frozen giving you a message to "Relace Ink Cartidges now".
You can no longer scan, fax, or do anything with this device until you go buy ink (can someone at epson please explain that one to me? Why can't I scan? That doesn't use any ink!!!).
Then just to make it even more irritating, if you are low in black ink (like I am) you can't even print in other colors. My status monitor just sits there on my computer telling me that my ink cartridges are low (duh, I know that by now epson thank you very much).
...and as the frustration level gets really high, do you think I can close that window so I can move on to other things? Uh...NO. That little irritating status monitor can not be closed, only minimized! So it's going to sit here on my computer until I go buy a black ink cartridge.
ARGH!!!!
I guess I didn't buy a wireless color inkete all in one printer...I bought an irritating little sister who constantly tells me "buy ink...buy ink...buy ink..."

Epson GT 2500 Plus Document Imaging Color Scanner (B11B181061) Review

Epson GT 2500 Plus Document Imaging Color Scanner (B11B181061)
Average Reviews:

Exceeded my expectations. I operate a rather complex home office environment with both Vista and XP computers, wired and wireless. The scanner integrated in fairly smoothly and works accross this heterogenious mix of compute resources equally well. Document feeding is snappy but things get slowed a bit due to network transit times (100MBPS Eithernet). A great way to share a high preformance (in the context of home office) Scanner. I've used many HP machines for years, this is a far better solution and a solid design from Epson.

Canon IS12 Color Image Scanner Cartridge Review

Canon IS12 Color Image Scanner Cartridge
Average Reviews:

If you have, or are buying, a canon bjc-50, 80, or 85 protable printer (the bjc-85 is great), this is really a very neat extra that works wonderfully well. Let's say you're on the road and need a portable printer with you. Now suppose you get a document that you need to copy or fax, but no machines around. Well, just take out your ink cartridge and put in the IS-12, and scan away! Its that easy. The scans are great. Oh, they're not of the calibre of say the HP6300 or Epson 1200, but they're pretty good for a small, lightweight, portable machine to use in a pinch. The color scans (pictures, photos) are very good and the text is clear and very useable. It doesn't come with OCR, so if you want to edit documents - you'll need to buy a good OCR software (I like Omni Page Pro V.10, or Paperport). This is a very handy, very cool item that works just great and is easy to use!

In today's world, space is often at a premium, whether it's on your desktop or in your carry-on bag. Canon offers big scanner performance in a tiny cartridge. The IS-12 is a space-saving marvel, giving you complete, 24-bit color scanning in a package that fits in your pocket. There are no cables to attach, and no other hardware is required. Just feed an image or photo into your BJC-2000 or BJC-4400 printer, and the IS-12 scans it at up to 360 dpi. Pop out the scanner cartridge, replace the ink cartridge, and you're ready to print.

Pros: Everything is blazing about this card. Yet contrary to other reviews, my temp at full load maxes around 83c, Idle about 48c. I have a very small case. I did upgrade the PSU to accomodate this card. I purchased a Corsair CMPSU-650TX 650W and it is more than adequate. To me this card is worth it, I got the 470 at first and returned it. Glad I did. This card is 1-1/2X faster.
Cons: Very expensive

H-P covered the bases with this printer. I have used H-P at my office for years but bought this one for home use. It has printed abut 5,000 copies, flawlessly, so far. It is very easy to set up and operate. The controls are clear and easy to work--if you want to abort a printing job, it can be done by pressing one orange button--act of Congress not required. So far it has not ruined a print--not one. Thanks H-P for this product. (No, I don't work for Hewlett-Packard.)

Canon PIXMA MP640 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer (3748B002)
Average Reviews:

Disclaimer: I do not own this printer but have worked with and installed tons of them at my school and I use them all the time. Anyway we have about 4 of these units and all work perfectly fine.
Quality: The image quality of this printer is stunning the detail level and color reproduction is great! When compared to the Canon iP6600 the color and detail reproduction seem to be slightly better.
Speed: It is fairly fast for photo printing its not a speed demon or anything but it is faster then most printers I have used.
Features : This printer has a ton of features too many to discuss but it can scan images it has a card reader and can be hooked up to the network via ethernet or via wifi.
Ink Consumption : This printer is also very easy on the ink and the wallet. Ink seems to last a fairly long time even when doing a lot of photo prints.
Setup: Setup was painless I installed all 4 of these units in about 40 mins just run the disc connect the printer install the print head and then the ink cartridges. ( I do however wish they used less packaging )
All in all I woud definitely recommend this to a friend. I have yet to have a single problem with any of the 4 and they are being used by tons of people each day for photo printing.
Edit; I forgot to mention that I have only tried this on Windows XP can't comment on the problem the other user spoke of with Macintosh Snow leopard 10.6.

Brother MFC-490CW Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One Printer Review

Brother MFC-490CW Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was skeptical of Brother printers, but after having a miserable experience with HP trying to get a 6380 to work (two broken units delivered; two units returned; 4 hours on phone with tech support), I broadened my search and found consistently good reviews of this printer. I live in a mixed household (Windows and Mac), which also eliminated many competitors. Finding it on sale tipped the scales.
Out of the box, the printer is compact, has a low profile, and is a bit sleeker looking than the competitors. Overall workmanship is solid.
Only exception is the paper tray which feels a bit flimsy, but nothing that would deter me. There is also no easy way to feed envelopes or letterhead without pulling out the papertray -- and to run envelopes, you need to remove regular paper since the bypass tray is only for photo paper.
Fax machine is a nice feature to have and, thankfully, it does not come with a phone handset attachment which would just take up space for no reason.
Per the manual, the printer can NOT handle both wireless and wired USB/network connection at the same time. Not a problem for me at all as the unit will only be used via wireless.
It is energy star rated and defaults to putting itself to sleep after a period of non-use. Startup out of sleep is very fast when you send a wireless document. I tend to unplug my power strip when I won't be using the computer for a while and was afraid that the settings would wipe, but when I plugged it back in the printer sprang back to life with all wireless configurations intact.
Set up was pretty simple. Following the quick start instructions went fine. Found my wireless router, connected, printed test page, no problem. Installed drivers/software on Windows XP, and it looks to be a lot less heavy than HP's full software. Only wrinkle in installation is that it asked me several times to connect/verify the wireless connection (each piece of software plus the hardware basically asked me the same thing a few times... I probably didn't need to enter it so many times, but it wasn't difficult so I decided to be safe). No problems with Mac install either. Very simple.
Overall, the set up was easy and quick. Brother could learn a bit from HP in terms of integrating the documentation and the printer set up a little bit better, but that's a minor issue. It was easy and the thing worked right away.
Automatic document feeder on top of the machine is a great feature to have in a printer at this level, and it works well.
The wireless integration is well done. I was able to print wirelessly immediately, and, quite a pleasant surprise to find that the "scan" feature actually worked as advertised.
Scanning was as simple as dropping a document into the feeder, hitting scan, selecting which of my two wireless PCs I wanted to receive the doc, and then hitting start. Seamlessly scanned and dropped the PDF onto my hard drive.
Ditto for requesting an OCR of the paper document. OCR quality is pretty amazing. I haven't had experience with desktop/consumer OCR in a few years, so maybe they are all of similar quality now, but I was pleasantly surprised. No formatting came over, but I was able to take a memo sitting on my desk and scan/OCR it in a few seconds. The text dropped into a plain text file and had no errors in text recognition or punctuation.
Print speed appears to be slower than the box claims. I haven't tested it, but it feels slower than a lower quality HP deskjet it replaced. Could be a function of the wireless throughput. I'm not terribly concerned since this is for a low-volume home setup. Print quality is good, not fantastic (I will play with settings and see if I can't improve that). Photo prints onto plain paper are not as clear as HP.
I am also very happy with the low noise level. The printer is quiet (much more so than my prior HP inkjet) and it doesn't rattle and shake and rumble like my prior HP inkjet.
If you're having trouble getting the photo paper bypass to work, I had to resort to the manual. You need to physically move the bypass tray forward and lock it into place -- there is no software setting or configuration switch in the print properties. (You can select paper type and all the normal options there, but not the bypass.) Then when done, you pull the paper tray out and physically move the bypass tray back into standby position. At first I was annoyed, but given the frequency of printing via the bypass, I don't care. And I figure not having two paper paths probably means less chance of paper jams.
The model higher than this one is essentially the exact same unit but with a phone handset and a built in digital answering machine. I didn't think that was worth an extra $50, but if you need an answering machine it might be worth it to save footprint.
So far so good. I highly recommend this printer. For the price, features, ease of set up, size, and quiet, it is a very good deal.
I had tried the HP 6380 which had (to me) slightly better print quality, but lacked the automatic document feeder fax and the very well integrated wireless software. I also was unable to get multiple of them to work -- fatal errors on hardware, plus bad customer support, so I gave up and went to this unit... glad I did. I saved money and got a printer better suited for me.
I will update this review in a few weeks if I have any issues with reliability.

USB 2.0 to 9 Pin RS232 Serial Convert Adapter

This works fine with Linux. It shows up on the USB bus as 1a86:7523, and uses the CH341 driver. I expect it will work automatically with most distributions.
The one that I received was green instead of the pictured blue. It comes with a flimsy USB extension cable, which may be helpful if it doesn't fit nicely plugged in directly. As noted by others, it has screws to attach to something instead of sockets for the screws on the serial cable, but the fit is usually tight enough that the screws are pointless.

HP Laserjet CM1415FNW Review

HP Laserjet CM1415FNW
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this item directly from HP's small-medium business (SMB) center. I was looking for a printer to replace my Brother MFC-9840CDW, which is a color/wireless all-in-one (AIO). Brother had not come out with a newer model that bettered this AIO that I have had for a couple of years. Since I was going to have to buy multiple new Brother toner cartridges for color, which would be 1/2 the price of a completely new model, I was in the market for a new AIO. My reqirements were AIO, laser, color, wireless networking and good user feedback. My Brother repair center told me that they can definitely tell the difference in HP color printers versus the other guys. Since my Brother gave out weak/light color prints, and the color accuracy was pretty bad, I wanted to like the HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw, which just came out and did not have any user comments.
I purchased from HP's SMB with a 30-day return policy. If you go through another center, your return period may be shorter. When I opened the box, only the main unit and an installation guide were inside. The box said I should get power/USB/phone cables and an installation CD, but they were missing. Due to a backorder delay, I was advised to order a new unit and ship the old one back. I got the drivers online and used a spare 3-prong computer-type power cable to test out the unit. Based on my findings in the rest of this review, I will be returning the HP for my money back.
I wanted wireless to minimize the cables going into my Apple Mac mini (mid-2010) which also has built-in wireless networking. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit via Boot Camp. You initially need the USB cable so the installation software can configure the unit to your computer and router. Once that was done, the computer was able to see the HP right away. This was much easier than the Brother, which required me to manually configure both the computer and AIO, and I had to call Brother's customer service, even though I am computer savvy.
I don't need much color, since I mostly print documents, nevertheless I would only consider laser for black or color. The color is definitely better than Brother. However, the color on the HP is a little too saturated and printing color is not quite as sharp as printing black. I made a color copy of a color copy, and the saturation increased, further distorting the original image. You get starter toner cartridges that are about 60% full. HP is not the only manufacturer doing that these days.
The paper tray is a puny 150 pages. The Brother has a 250-sheet tray and I purchased a 500 sheet 2nd tray. You cannot add a second tray to the HP. Also, the HP does not have a manual feed tray for envelopes or other paper. The Brother nicely holds 3 envelopes at a time in its manual feed tray. The HP claims to have a manual feed for envelopes, but all it does is pause printing until you pull out the tray, pull out your paper, slide the guides to envelope size, insert your envelopes, close the tray, and then you may have to tell it to print the envelope (I never bothered to print an envelope from the HP after discovering how convoluted the process is). I would have likely kept the HP if it had a manual feed for envelopes, and I only had to pull out the tray to add fancy bond paper. This AIO is not made for any office work in which you print letters, unless you only print envelopes in batches. So why would any home or small office buy one?
When I print a letter to my Brother, my Word document has the first page(s) formatted as an envelope(s) and the remaining pages letter-size. The documents also have Word's Page Setup defined to pull paper from the designated tray: manual feed for envelopes, 250-sheet Tray 1 for letter-size bond paper for correspondence, and 500-sheet Default Tray (Tray 2) for regular letter-size paper for everything else.
I liked the fact that the HP has a color touchpad as its user interface. But in real use in making copies, you have to touch the screen to wake it up and then hit the print button. Dedicated print buttons would have been preferred, one for black and one for color like the Brother.
The unit stays pretty quiet and printing noise is not excessive. I do not notice the fan running as loud as the Brother after a print or copy job. It occasionally self-calibrates, but infrequent enough to not be excessively annoying. The HP's first page out when printing comes out in one-third or one-quarter the time as the Brother, which takes about 1-minute from sleep mode and acts like it is printing 3-pages before it actually prints the first page. The HP is smaller than the Brother, but I would gladly trade a little height to get a bigger tray and options for a manual feed or an additional tray.

Brother MFC-5490CN Professional Series Color Inkjet All-in-One with Ethernet Networking Review

Brother MFC-5490CN Professional Series Color Inkjet All-in-One with Ethernet Networking
Average Reviews:

I got it [...] and I couldn't be happier. I am able to work from home becasue I have this unit. I love the feature in which I can scan to email as PFDs.
I have been using the printer for 6 months and need to replace the black, so I am happy with the ink usage. The paper handling may not be perfect but it is way better than the last HP I had and has never jammed on me. I haven't tried printing photos because that is not why I bought it. I have a Canon I use for that.
The poster that indicated he had to enable file and printer sharing is not correct. I just hook it to my router and any computer in my home I install the driver on can use the printer.
For the price it is a great all in one. It prints very quickly, receives and sends faxes in record time. I am very happy. Buy it.

The printer supports paper sizes up to legal size (8 x 14 inches), and has a large 150-sheet input tray so you won't have to constantly add more paper. It uses separate ink cartridges for each color so you only replace the color that runs out.
You can also print photos directly from the printer without using your PC thanks to the PhotoCapture Center. You can import photos directly using either the built-in media card slot or by connecting a PictBridge-enabled camera or USB flash memory. The media card slot supports compact flash, memory stick, memory stick pro, SD, SDHC, xD, and xD TypeM/TypeH.
Copy and Scan with the Same Device The MFC-5490CN lets you copy and scan as well as print from the same device. The stand-alone copier doesn't require a PC and can make both black-and-white and color copies at a speed of 23 cpm black and 20 cpm color. It can scale copies from 25 to 400 percent of the original, and it supports sorting and 2-in-1/4-in-1 copying. A 50-sheet automatic document feeder lets you scan and copy pages unattended.
The flatbed scanner has a maximum optical resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi at 36-bit color depth for high-quality scans. It works with both Mac OS and Windows, and it includes Scansoft PaperPort v11 SE with OCR software for Windows and Presto! PageManager software for Mac.
Send and Receive Black-and-White and Color Faxes A high-speed Super G3 33.6K bps fax modem lets you send and receive black-and-white and color faxes at up to three seconds per page. The 50-sheet automatic document feeder lets you send faxes unattended. In addition to functioning as a stand-alone fax, it also works as a PC fax.
Built-In Networking Lets Everyone Use the Device The device has wired 10/100 Base-TX networking built in, making it simple to share the device with everyone in your network.
The Brother MFC-5490CN measures 17.3 x 8.7 x 15.9 inches (WxHxD) and weighs 20.7 pounds. It is Energy Star compliant and is backed by a two-year warranty.

Panasonic Multifunction Laser Printer (KX-MB2000) Review

Panasonic Multifunction Laser Printer (KX-MB2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this because it's space efficient and according to Panasonic's website, works with Macintosh.
No. It doesn't.
I bought a copier that does nothing else.
I have two different Macs, followed their directions downloaded from the website. No printing.
Tried it with USB. Nope. LAN. Nope.
The computer sees it. I even managed a scan via USB, although I want to set it up on the network.
I'm no novice at setting these things up. I'm the guy techies come to with questions.
Called Tech Support. After a long hold, transferred. Another long hold: "This is Canadian support." I'm not in Canada. "I'll transfer you." An hour later I was told, "Oh, yes, we know that's an issue. We'll call you back."
A week later, no call back. No printing. No more buying a Panasonic.
Now the support website, which was previously slow, won't even come up.
____________
UPDATE: Success!
It took two weeks, multiple additional phone calls, many more phone transfers and--finally--a call back from someone who actually knows the product, networking and Macintosh. It took some serious networking knowledge (you have to know what the numbers mean in a Subnet Mask, for example), but between the two of us, we figured it out.
It wasn't a simple fix and it required trouble-shooting steps I've never taken before in more than 20 years of computing. But now it prints and scans on the network. Now that it works, I actually like the machine. But all those hours required to get me here won't soon be forgotten.

HP Color LaserJet 2820 All-in-One Printer, Copier, Scanner (Q3948A#ABA) Review

HP Color LaserJet 2820 All-in-One Printer, Copier, Scanner (Q3948A#ABA)

Installation: (Easy) The first thing you should do is insert the installation CD. It will provide very good (explicit) installation instructions. Use the active guide. You can slide the bar back and forth to help you follow the instructions. What I did was to follow the active instruction to the end then I would slide the bar where I felt I needed more precise help. This system works very well because unless you move forward arrow, you control what you need to review.
[...]
Print Quality: Excellent!
Scanning: You can tell the difference between the original and the copy. I would guess that there is about a 10 percent (or less) loss in clarity. My other HP scanner/ printers have been very close to original quality. That may not be important to you.
Possible Problem: This machine is a well constructed, professional quality machine. It is bulky and heavy for the average person. Unless you are physically active, more than six feet tall with long arms, don't try to handle this 60 plus pound item by your self. Get a friend to help. Put the printer on a very stabile table (preferably a heavy duty printer stand). A card table is not strong enough.
[...]
Possible Installation Problem: When installing the Imaging Drum, be careful that you line the drum up with the slots provided in the machine. The drum will slide down the slots easily to the bottom. Once at the bottom, press firmly down. It will click once it is in place. The instructions will not tell you to do this. Try to bring down the front cover. If the front cover will not come down and fit flush with the printer body, you have not seated the Imagine Drum correctly.
Paper Placement: The CD describes the HP 2840 which has two paper supply areas. Not even the written instructions tell you about the main tray. It is not a tray at all. On the face of the printer below the "HP" logo, is a finger slot, pull outward. That is your paper tray. At the front edge, pull out the tray extension. Then there is another extension by rotating a panel on top of the tray outward to provide full length paper support. In fact, the support extends about 3/4" beyond the paper.
Would I purchase this machine? I'm pleased with the machine. It is a typical HP quality machine. I haven't tried it's other features. For my purposes, it is fine. I don't see any need for the HP2840. If you are working with two different qualities of paper, then perhaps the HP2840 is the machine you need.
PROBLEM:
Don't look for a manual. HP has included the manual in it's program, according to them. Ask Tech support to direct you to the manual. I haven't found it yet. If they have taken the trouble to provide it on a CD, the could have printed it. This is one area which makes me unhappy.
This is an outstanding color printer. I have used it for more than six months. I'm very happy with it. 3-18-07 PC

Pacific Image Electronics' PrimeFilm PF1800U USB Film Scanner Review

Pacific Image Electronics' PrimeFilm PF1800U USB Film Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Customer support [is bad]; the drivers and software that I bought in March 2003 had a 1996-1998 copyright date; and worst of all, scans get progressively darker. A scanner that can't handle exposure settings! it's OK until it runs thru it's 'calibration' routine, then it's the beginning of the end. I went thru two different units, they both were terrible.

Plustek Opticbook 3600 Plus A4 Book Edge Pdf Ocr Scanner Review

Plustek Opticbook 3600 Plus A4 Book Edge Pdf Ocr Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you read other reviews saying the software is unstable, DO BELIEVE THEM. I took my chances and bought it anyway. I found out they were right. You can (and should) consider purchasing some other software and just leaving the CDs in the box (except the driver). I have a lot of thick books to scan (500-2000 pages each) and I'd say the software crashes at least 3 to 5 times per book (and that was AFTER installing the patch from the web site - it was much worse with the version in the box). About once every thousand pages, the software crashes and gets corrupted to the point where you have to completely uninstall it and the reinstall it. Sometimes, even that doesn't do the trick and you have to know how to clean it out of the registry (NOT for the novice Windows user). The company does offer a clean-up utility to get it out of the registry but I found I still had to do it manually a few times. This is NOT acceptable and very discouraging. Find some other software and factor its price into the cost of this scanner when making your decision to buy. Now, as for the scanner itself... decent considering the cost (not a lot of other book scanners in this price range). Don't expect every page to be perfectly straight the first time (I learned to live with it) but the clarity is good. The file sizes will add up, especially when you convert to a PDF. The PDF stores each page as a graphic (picture) and you cannot select and copy text as you might expect. I tried using the OCR feature that comes with it but found it did not do a perfect job of interpreting the graphic into text. What's more, if you try to use OCR your PDF won't look like the book. Overall, buy it if you intend to use 3rd party software.
