HP K8600 Office Jet Pro Color Printer Review

HP K8600 Office Jet Pro Color Printer
Average Reviews:

If any graphic design artists need to print in CMYK and wide format, this is probably the best printer you can get in terms of cost and quality. The 88 ink is super cheap and it pumps out a LOT of pages. If you plan on doing a lot of printing but don't wanna pay as much as a laser jet printer, you should use a printer that uses the 88 ink. For 20.99 this cartridge can give you 1200 pages. What other cartridge on the market can do that for so cheap??? What's even better is how 34 bucks you can get the XL and the XL can do 2400 pages. Again, what cartridge do you know of can give you 2400 pages for 34 bucks? It's a great printer at a great price when you can find it on sale.

HP Deskjet 9800 Wide Format Color Printer (C8165A#A2L) Review

HP Deskjet 9800 Wide Format Color Printer (C8165A#A2L)
Average Reviews:

Bought this for the wife to do some scrapbooking. Thought for sure the other reviewers must have been doing something wrong. Nope. This thing has a mind of it's own...especially if you try to print anything larger than 8 1/2 X 11. HP has not perfected home user wide format printers yet.

I returned it for the Canon i9900 wide format printer which, granted, was $100 more but the quality is simply amazing. 91 positive reviews can't be wrong. I was so impressed with the Canon quality that I scooped up a PIXMA 780 All-In-One for myself. Also a tremnedous number of positve reviews there as well. Much cheaper ink, better quality - how did I miss these the first time. Live and learn from my experiences.

Canon MultiPASS F50 Flatbed Multifunction Review

Canon MultiPASS F50 Flatbed Multifunction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An excellent printer, lots of great features for the money, although a few minor quirks. I was considering some other flatbed all-in-one's from HP, Brother, Lexmark, etc, and am using this to replace separate older HP all-in-one and Canon scanner units. Some reasons I chose this unit include combination of ability to copy 8x14 legal (auto-doc feeder only), individual color cartridges (cheaper and environmentally more friendly), high speed color fax w/270pg memory, 2400x1200 color print resolution (useful for digital photos), 30pg auto-doc feeder, direct hi-res color copies (1200x1200), 25-400% copy enlarge/reduce, and print speed.
Setup was easy - quite a few steps to unwrap packing tapes and other setup, but fairly dummy-proof both hardware and software. Performance is excellent in many ways for basic printing, copying, scanning and fax. In the 1200dpi direct color copying mode, even does a respectable job copying direct to glossy photo paper. Doc feeder is smooth, no jams so far. Note that 8x14 legal scans work fine, but are through the doc feeder only, which runs them through a small separate 1"-wide scan area - the plate glass accepts up to letter and A4 sizes (the doc is wrong on this suggesting 8x14 glass copies, but a note on the canon web site corrects this). The unit is a good healthy size, but not overly huge. It vibrates back and forth a bit during inkjet printing sweeps, but a good solid base will help. There is also a plastic cover over the paper tray, a nice touch to keep dirt/dust off the paper supply.
On the down side, the docs are well written for basic functions, but very poor for most advanced features. Many technical terms are not defined (eg: most fax tx/rcv settings) or not documented beyond just mentioning them by name. There is no single section or roadmap for all of the on-printer menus and most menu settings are not in the index either, so you have to jump around the pages by eye. The color/quality/paper settings in the print setup, while flexible, have little documentation in terms of what they really do (eg: difference between photo/glossyphoto/photofilm paper type settings). I'm still working on trying to compensate a bit for correct skin tones from my Fuji digital camera, which tends to favor red more than I'd like - although shots from another digital camera came out fine. Another nit: the max scan resolution I've seen is 600x600, so I'm not sure where the claimed 600x1200 settings come from. Finally, 17c/12b ppm copying and printing speeds are not what I'm seeing for highest resolution settings, these numbers must be for either lowest resolution, or multiple page copy speeds.
All that aside, I'm very happy with the unit, it copies and prints great high-resolution pictures in reasonable speeds, and is nicely priced.

Designed with the small office in mind, Canon's F50 Multipass combines several necessary functions inside one sleek box that fits snugly into an 18-by-24-inch space. Featuring a fax machine, copier, scanner and printer, this speedy and accurate machine is an economical personal assistant for the home office.
Faxes are transmitted as quickly 3 seconds per page; color sheets may take as long as 60 seconds. With programmable dialing options for 12 one-touch numbers and a 30-page automatic document feeder, it practically operates by itself. The transmission memory can contain up to 270 pages, and users have easy access to a number of utility reports.
The printer and copier are compatible with envelopes, transparencies, photo paper, stickers, and transfers as well as plain paper in letter or legal sizes. For monochrome sheets, the F50 churns out up to 17 pages per minute at 600 x 600 dpi; in color, it can process up to 12 pages per minute at an outstanding 2,400 x 1,200 dpi. The paper tray can handle up to 100 sheets of plain paper. Up to 99 copies can be created from one original, with available magnification options ranging from 25 to 400 percent.
The flatbed scanner offers 9,600 x 9,600 dpi and 36-bit color depth; hobbyists can easily process their vacation photos while professionals can quickly organize important documents.
The F50 is fully compatible with PC and Macintosh systems, and includes a scan processing software package. Canon provides a one-year limited warranty on parts and service, along with an InstantExchange program. --Jill Lightner

Lexmark Prestige Pro805 Small Office Wireless Multifunction Inkjet Printer with Web-enabled Touchscreen Review

Lexmark Prestige Pro805 Small Office Wireless Multifunction Inkjet Printer with Web-enabled Touchscreen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Summary: Two great features make this printer worth considering: a penny per page (black ink cost) and ease of use powered by a touchscreen and one button "smartsolutions." Unfortunately, the implementation of these features involves a lot of setup complication, both for smartsolutions and the delicate printhead/cartridge system. Most people will be better off waiting a year or two until the smartsolution ecosystem further evolves and kinks are worked out of the printhead/cartridge mechanism in some future model.
But if you need a printer before then with competitive printing/copying/scanning quality and speed, and you find these extra features attractive, you'll likely be pleased with the Pro805 - once you get past the 2-6 hours setup hassle. Though I'm annoyed at the 5 hours I spent on setup, we like the end result and will stick with the Pro805 for many years.
Details (long):
Usage: This unit is used at home with Wifi, my wife's iMac (10.4), and my Windows XP desktop and netbook. I purchased this all-in-one primarily for my wife, a part-time writer. This replaced a piece-of-junk printer that she used for drafts (which required that she email me final copies or anything long to print at my office on a laser printer).
The penny per page black ink cost is the main selling point - as a writer, my wife prints out frequent black and white drafts. She doesn't want the bulk of a laser printer and she does have an occasional need for color, copying, and scanning. Ease of use also matters, so competent paper handling and the potential of smartsolutions is attractive. It was a birthday gift - so as part of the gift I set it up, including setting up one button smartsolutions appropriate for my wife. But I thought this printer would also be nice for me, as I use Evernote and liked the idea of being able to easily scan in documents and have them show up in my Evernote or Gmail accounts. Printing at home over WiFi is also an added convenience.
Printing Quality - (Note: Most of our usage/testing is Black & White) - The printing quality on draft mode is reasonable. On highest quality mode it is very crisp - you have to look very closely to distinguish from a laser printer. We noticed some stray dots and a little streaking at first but when we selected "clean printhead" from the menu, these issued were resolved. Overall we are very pleased, though we hope we don't have to clean the printhead too often, as ink gets depleted with each cleaning.
Printing Speed - The claimed 33 page per minute printing speed is accurate using draft mode, after the first page is printed. When trying to print after many minutes of inactivity, there is a long period where the printer wakes up and gets ready to print the first page. Given these constraints, a faster way to use the printer is to print a many documents in a row. It prints less than 10 pages per minute in high quality mode, but my wife finds that acceptable.
Ease of Use - WiFi printing works flawlessly - any computer (with the Pro805 driver installed) that is connected to the router (either WiFi or Ethernet) can print. The drivers for both the Mac and Windows are easy to use and offer a vast array of options, including the ability to set up "profiles" (i.e. one profile for quick draft black/white, another for final drafts, another for photos, etc.). The Windows drivers appear to offer a wider array of printing options. The other functions of this all-in-one are also easy to use, whether you use customized one-button smartsolutions, navigate the touch screen, or use the included software on your computer. No paper jams so far and the automatic document feed worked fine in a couple of test cases.
Copying - Have not tested extensively, but Black/White is excellent, color seems pretty good.
Scanning/OCR - The quality of Black/White scanning is excellent. A 15 page scan using the automatic document feeder took just over 2 minutes. The included Abbyy FineReader 6.0 OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software for Windows systems has been 100% accurate so far in converting typed or printed text into text, RTF, or searchable PDF files. To use OCR, you must have your computer turned on and connected to the same WiFi network. Macintosh OCR software is not included, requiring an extra purchase for Mac-only networks that want OCR. Color scanning works, but I don't feel qualified to comment on quality. Scans can be initiated from a computer, from the printer "scan" button, or from a smartsolution. As of March, 2010, the types of scans you can do from a smartsolution are somewhat limited, so you currently need to use the "scan" button or a computer to have access to all possible scanning options.
Email - Documents can be scanned and then emailed, with or without smartsolutions. This is a great feature. I found out the hard way that the printer hangs when attempting to send an attachment that exceeds the limit of the ISP. Comcast is the ISP set up with our Pro805, so the attachment limit is 10MB. A 600 DPI 8.5x11 JPG exceeds this limit (13MB?). And in many instances you will not know if your multi-page PDF file will exceed the limit and hang the printer. The only way to restart the printer after it hangs is to pull out the plug and put it back in.
Smartsolutions - Once set up, these one-button solutions make the printer really easy to use - even a pleasure to use. My favorite smartsolution is "Scan to Email." You can set up one "Scan to Email" to send 300DPI PDFs to your real estate agent for documents you signed and give it a custom name such as "PDF docs to agent." Then set up another "Scan to Email" which emails yourself a 150DPI JPG, etc. The user simply puts the document on the glass, then uses the touch screen to touch "smartsolutions", followed by "PDF to agent"or some other customized "Scan to Email" smartsolution.
An Evernote (a web-based notetaking app) smartsolution particularly intrigued me, but the Evernote smartsolution is basically a limited version of "Scan to Email" which gives you the Evernote Icon but subtracts the ability to have a subject or message. So I just set up a different "Scan to Email" to get things into Evernote and used a subject line with PDF scan @scans to direct the scanned file, called "PDF scan," to go to an Evernote folder called "scans."
Another good smartsolution is "Scan To PDF" which does OCR and saves the file into a specified folder on the computer with the OCR software. This results in a PDF file whose text is searchable and can be copied/pasted. It would be nice if there were similar smartsolutions that allowed scanning to TXT, RTF, and XLS files but that is not the case as of the time of this writing (4/2/10). I would also like to see a smartsolution that allows emailing TXT, RTF, searchable PDF, or XLS files with the touch of one button. Yet another nice feature would be to allow naming the subject of an email from the printer instead of automatically having the same subject name each time.
Overall, I think the smartsolutions idea is great, and is off to a nice start. So long as you have one person in a small office or family who doesn't mind going through all the setup hassles, any printer which supports smartsolutions can be set up to simplify certain complicated, multi-step functions. This will only improve over time as more smartsolutions are rolled out by Lexmark, and possibly outside developers.
Maintenance/Reliablity - My unit has been fully functioning since 3/20/10, so I can't speak to long term reliability. However, from the setup hassles I experienced (see below), it is clear that the printhead and cartridge mechanism is a point of potential failure. All the parts involved are delicate, tricky to install/uninstall, and require cleaning if dirty. Sometimes manually cleaning of the printhead and its insertion point are necessary, while other times a "clean printhead" must be performed by the printer, which depletes ink (the deep clean depletes about 1/8 of each cartridge). Lexmark has a 5 year warranty on the Pro805 so if the printhead experiences problems, they will replace it for free - but I would much prefer not having problems to begin with. I'll update this section in the future after at least a few months of use.
In 2 weeks of use (80-100 pages?), there has been no paper jam or skipped pages, and this includes testing the automatic document feeder and duplex printing. Paper handling has been perfect so far.
Setup: It took over 5 hours to completely setup this printer, and it is complicated by many factors. Configuration settings are spread out between the printer, computer, and smartsolutions website, and sometimes one change involves making a change in two or more of these locations. Here's the detailed breakdown:
1 hour: Minimum required setup for 2 computers (1 Mac, 1 Windows XP). Installing from the CD or the web site is easy enough (though, to be safe, I obtained the Mac driver from Lexmark's web site, bypassing the CD altogether). I installed XP first as I figured Windows XP would be most likely to have a smooth installation. While the software ran smoothly, there were many printer setup steps. Had I not got hung up with a manufacturing defect, it would have taken approximately 1 hour to set up the two computers, including Printer's WiFi, excluding email. Note that setting up computers after the first one is a simple driver installation - only the first is lengthy because the software directs you to set up the printer as well.
3-30 minutes: Email setup. Before you can Email, you need to configure the Pro805 with an ISP. After 20 minutes of trying a bunch of combinations and Googling for help, I gave up trying to get Gmail...Read more›

SIM card microSD card reader Windows, MAC, Linux compatible Review

SIM card microSD card reader Windows, MAC, Linux compatible

The software only reads the phonebook. When I try to use another sim alalyzer program to read the sim card (while this device is plugged into my USB drive), it tells me that I don't have a pc/sc smart card reader installed. It doesn't install any smart card drivers. After some research, I found out that this is one of those cheap card readers with cheap software that isn't pc/sc compatable. So...forget trying to retrieve a forgotten or lost sim pin number with this thing.

HP LaserJet 3030 All-in-One Review

HP LaserJet 3030 All-in-One
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In many ways I really like this all in one, it's does great copying, printing, scanning in all ways except that it often prints slightly crooked on the paper, off by a small but noticeable amount. HP tried over the phone to help me resolve this with no success. Since I have other printers, I learned to live with this until the machine died recently. HP sent me a refurbished replacement which after about a year of ownership I was happy to do, they charged $34 for a temporary warranty "uplifting", no problem with that. However, I am sorry to report that this refurbished version has the same page misalignment problem as the last one. Yes, I've checked my power supply, use HP paper and toner, etc. This is just an unfortunate and non-trivial defect for this otherwise fine printer.

HP PhotoSmart PSC 2510 All-in-One Review

HP PhotoSmart PSC 2510 All-in-One
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This should be called the HP Photosmart POS 2510 instead, cause it's a serious POS. When looking at the reviews before i purchased, i read one fellow who said that it seems like 2 different companies made the software and hardware. I thought at the time "he's probably just not as PC savvy as i am, since i am afterall in the software industry." So i gave it a go. Boy was he right.
First off, the hardware and featureset is great. it had everything i wanted, and when i pulled it out of the box i was very impressed with how it looked and felt. getting it up on the wireless network was a breeze, which contradicted what some people said, so i'm starting to feel pretty pleased with my purchasing decision at this point. but then i installed the software .. it's 1.5 GB of pure crap. want to pick and choose which features to install? too bad! it's all (fax, scan, print) or nothing! so if you have another PC on the network that you only want to print from (which is likely if you're considering buying this unit) you can't just install a print driver. you have to install the whole 1.5 GB enchilada, which includes an application that's always running in the background (HP Director), which really bugs me because that sort of stuff always screws up your system. which brings me to ..
the software screwed up my system. now whenever i boot my PC, my system pretty much is locked up for 15 seconds as HP Director tries to figure something out. and whenever i shut my system down, HP Director never terminates itself properly so i have to kill the process myself. really annoying.
so then im playing with the features. i scan a picture at 2400 dpi .. and it takes a HALF HOUR. it takes 15 minutes to scan and then 15 minutes for the HP Photo application to open it. in the meantime my system is completely unusable. and i have a decent system! 2.4GHz, 512MB RAM. lower resolution scans are fine, but i suggest you go watch tv if you want to scan 2400 or above (i cant even imagine what it would do at 4800, 9600, or 19200 dpi.)
so i tell HP all this, and they arrange for a tech to call me, which is actually pretty cool. the tech guy tells me the 2510 must be on to avoid the system sluggishness at bootup/shutdown, and he says it was scanning slow because i'm on a wireless network (11Mb/s) and 2400dpi makes some pretty big files. well, i've been keeping the 2510 on 24/7 and i still have the boot/shutdown problems, and i've since moved it over to a wired 100Mb/s network and it's still just as slow.
i wish Canon had network interface options, because i would return this in a second if they did. unfortunately even with all its problems, this is still the best solution for my home network. curse you, HP.
** EDIT **
Couple more problems with this unit since i wrote this review ..
1. when I had it using my 802.11b network, i noticed that my other wireless devices would drop connection ocassionally. I didn't think a wireless client could possibly interfere with my wireless access point so I didnt think too much about it. But as soon as i moved the HP over to a wired connection, my wireless network magically stopped having problems.
2. when i set the network link speed on the HP to 100Mb/s Full Duplex, it only does half duplex. No matter what i try .. half duplex.

Samsung SCX-4500 Monochrome Laser Multifunction Printer Review

Samsung SCX-4500 Monochrome Laser Multifunction Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This printer is smaller than I thought. It is about the size of a small desktop PC. It is rather "cool" looking printer. If you are trying to make a fashion statement with your printer, then this printer does its job.
Its small size comes with one noticeable compromise: a small paper tray that can only hold 75-100 sheets. It is not built to be a large volume printer and even infrequent use may result in filling the paper tray more than one desires. It can, however, print at a fast speed and at a good quality (600 dpi) resolution. The copier function is easy to use (press the copy button) and works reasonably well, and is good for low volume copying. I had no problems copying a 20 page document and it processed each copy in less than 5 seconds. The copy quality was on par with standard office copy machines.
The refill tray is expensive (about $70) and only prints about 2000 pages. That comes to around 3.5 cents per page. That is somewhat high.
One thing of note, this printer does not have a fax capability. So it is not all-in-one laser printer.
I recommend this printer to those who need a reasonably good laser printer/copier in a small form factor. If you need a high volume printing/copying machine which prints at a low print/cent ratio, then I would look elsewhere.

Asus Eee PC 900SD-BLK009X Netbook Review

Asus Eee PC 900SD-BLK009X Netbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this netbook last week, and I'm very happy with it. It's not very powerful, but it's perfectly suitable for light web browsing. The screen is a bit small, but it's usable after removing the status bar and bookmarks toolbar in Firefox. The keyboard is surprisingly easy to adjust to. The most annoying part is the odd placement of the home and end keys. The SSD is pretty small (only 8GB), but is fine for the intended purpose: web browsing. I wiped Windows XP and installed 8.10, which recognized all of the hardware automatically.

Samsung CLP 300 Mini Personal Color Laser Printer Review

Samsung CLP 300 Mini Personal Color Laser Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been looking pretty hard at the sales flyers over the last few months waiting for a chance to score a color laser printer at a price range that doesn't make me have to eat bag lunches for a month to catch up. A local office superstore had two models I was eying, an HP 1600 and this one. They seemed pretty similar in most regards until [...] dropped the CLP-300 100 dollars below the HP. It was time to grab the bargain.
This is the second Samsung laser printer I have in my home office now, the first one being the little ML-1740. I've had that one for better than a year now and it has been wonderful. So I wasn't afraid to try the Samsung CLP-300 because its name isn't as big as HP's. So I get it home and commence to setting it up. As with the earlier ML-1740, it took about 5 minutes to unpack, route cables, plug in the toner packs, and fire it up. It didn't skip a beat and had a test page done in a jiffy. Drivers for the computer went just as easily. Overall a very, very simple set up.
Back to the toner "packs" (or cartridges) for a bit... I don't think I've ever seen a more simple toner system. This system is literally easier to deal with than inkjet cartridge replacement. The front cover of the printer opens to reveal 4 "holes" for the toner cartridges. Simply remove the protective covers from the 3 color cartridges and 1 black cartridge and pop them into their respective holes. This has to be a step forward for the laser printer world.
Anyway, I've only had this for about a week but have put maybe 200 pages through it already. It works like a champ and I'm really happy I picked it up. I'll list below some of the pros and cons as I see them (in no particular order): Pros:
* Low noise when printing... very low noise actually. Its little more than a light whirring sound.
* Fast printing (about 20 to 25 seconds to the first high quality print and very fast once started).
* Great drivers giving you good printing options like double sided printing, booklet printing (on long or short side of page), watermarks, pre-generated letterhead, ability to print multiple pages per sheet, ability to print posters, etc... ...way too much to list here.
* Decent color photo prints. The quality isn't quite up to the photo quality of the better inkjet photo printers, but its good. And it certainly isn't poor enough to be a negative. I'd say though that if your primary goal is photo prints you might want to compare some other higher priced models before settling on this one. Otherwise, this should suit you fine.
*Size... it fits perfect on my printer stand. This doesn't over power the room by being overly bulky. Its not too much bigger than the ML-1740 and way smaller than its older sibling the CLP-510 (I liked the built in duplexing on the 510 but wasn't too crazy at all about its size).Cons:
* Power... it seems like it uses quite a bit more than the little ML-1740 (no surprise I'm sure) because my battery backup makes a click every few minutes like a brown out spike happens. The ML-1740 makes the lights flicker on occasion but had no effect on the UPS. On a related note however, this printer has a user adjustable power saver mode that puts it to sleep after a set number of minutes.
* Low paper capacity. Only about 150 sheets in the paper tray. But its easy to remove and fill and I doubt I'll ever print more than that in a sitting.
* No front auxiliary feed tray (like the ML-1740) for feeding various sized papers into the machine. The CLP-300 does take various sized papers but you have to use the paper tray.
* Power switch in the back. The ML-1740 had this set up too. How hard can it be to put the switch on the front or even the front side to make it more accessible. Better yet, let the unit be powered on and off automatically by software like some other printers can do. The switch all the way in the back, on the bottom, is not a deal breaker but its an aggravation that I wish Samsung would address in their future models.
* Toner amount... Here's something I'm not sure will be an issue or not in the long run but right now I'm a bit concerned. The toner packs are small. The color ones are a bit smaller than a styrofoam cup while the black one is about as large as a typical ceramic coffee mug but a bit taller perhaps. The technical papers say you'd get about 1000 sheets of color printing per color. I'll edit this review in a few months with my impression of how true that appears to be. The silver lining to this issue might be that the toner packs are cheaper than the typical toner cartridges for other laser printers. And also, according to the Samsung website, this printer is supposed to be cheaper to operate in the long than other printers. A cent or two here or there adds up I guess. So my score of 4 out of 5 stars represents the above pros and cons and my experience so far with this printer. Its not a perfect 5 because there is room for improvement but its a very nice printer that is great to have. And for the price, there is no reason why every home can't have color laser printing now. I can still remember when inkjets were replacing the dot matrix printers... move over inkjets, here we go again.*** Follow Up Edit: 24oct06 (original post 9oct06)***
I'm coming up on a month now of useage and haven't had a problem yet. I would like to add to my comment made above though regarding the quality of the photo prints ... I've done a bunch of pictures so far and I would again encourage people who are looking predominantly for a picture printer to look at a level a bit higher than this one. For what I do, this is fine, but folks looking for photo quality printing would likely find this a bit lacking.
Also, along with the photos and numerous web pages, I've printed several good sized PDF documents with a lot of illustrated graphics and the toner indicators in my printer monitor (the software) shows negligible toner use. I can't confirm this by sight or weight of the toner packs themselves but if the indicators are correct, I'm happy with the mileage I'm getting so far.

Lexmark X8350 All-in-One Printer Plus Photo Review

Lexmark X8350 All-in-One Printer Plus Photo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one terrific printer. It was easy to install, though it would be nice if they'd include a USB cable. One of my first impressions of it was that it was very sturdily built. Unlike many other machines in the same price range, this has a solid feel. The controls are very easy to use, and the color screen is a great feature. It's got easy to follow menus for all functions.
The list of features goes on and on. Everything works great as a standalone. The basic features function exactly as they're supposed to; dig a little deeper and you'll find some pretty neat options. For example you can make a simple copy, or reduce or enlarge, or take one image and duplicate it multiple times on one page. Or it will take multiple different pages and combine them onto one page.
It can read from memory cards, show the pictures on the screen, and print them without turning the computer on. It will also read from USB memory sticks, and can connect directly to some digital cameras.
Print quality is excellent in both black and white and color. I haven't used it much for photos yet - one drawback is that to really do photos you need to swap out the standard color cartridge for a color photo cartridge. With the standard cartridge, color pictures are just acceptable.
Paper handling so far has also been very good. Envelopes and invitation card stock paper work just fine.
The only feature I wish this unit had was network capability. But all in all, a highly recommended product.

Canon BJC-55 Color Bubble Jet Printer Review

Canon BJC-55 Color Bubble Jet Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
On the go, I frequently need to print out documents, be it invoices, reciepts, e-mails, etc etc so I decided to purchase this product. Words cannot describe my feelings toward it, I use it soo much with the laptops I don't know how I lived without one before. Installation on Windows 2k, and ME was flawless, both using the Fast IrDA.
The printer is just the perfect size to slide in to my briefcase, and adds little weight. It's battery operation is really what caught my eye, it says you can print about 100 pages with a full charge, but I think its a bit less than that. However, the battery takes little time to charge.
I was not aware it would come with as much ink as it did, came with 2 color cartidges, 1 black (small), and 1 black (large), as well as two trays that they are held in. The Fast IrDA is such a fabulous thing, wireless printing all the way. I decided to purchase a USB cable, its much easier some times using the cable then the IrDA (Infared) port. The quality of the documents is fantastic, matching (and beating!) my desktop printers at home. The speed is good, considering this is a portable printer. The only real drawback is that it is a single sheet feed printer, unless you buy the paper loader, which I will surely do! This is THE BEST portable printer I've found on the market, it is well worth the money.
This is a small update, I've been using the printer for about 5 months now, and everything has gone smoothly. I purchased the auto-sheet feeder from Canon (directly, from their web site) and it performs just like a normal desktop printer would! I'm still loving it.

Lightweight design and wireless connectivity allow you to take the Canon BJC-55 Color Bubble Jet printer anywhere you go. Weighing in at just over 2 pounds, the compact BJC-55 is fully portable. Use the built-in Fast IrDA for convenient wireless printing or the USB port for quick and easy connection to both Mac and PC systems. The BJC-55 runs on the long-life lithium-ion battery and allows you to print up to 100 pages before recharging.
The BJC-55 provides desktop-quality printing at 5.5 pages per minute (2 ppm color). It handles several types of paper, including legal, A4, European, and also envelopes. At 720 x 360 dpi, it produces sharp lines and crisp color. Optional photo ink can be added for printing high-quality photos. Other options include a 100-sheet automatic feeder and the IS-12 Color Image Scanner cartridge so you can use your printer as a color sheetfed scanner.
The Canon BJC-55 includes a CD-ROM, printer drivers, and user's guide. --Emily Bakko

Brother MFC-5860cn Color Photo Inkjet All-in-One Flatbed with Networking with 2nd paper tray Review

Brother MFC-5860cn Color Photo Inkjet All-in-One Flatbed with Networking with 2nd paper tray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From the specs, this Brother multi-function printer has a lot going for it. In the home or workplace, it falls far short.
I use this printer in a busy home office. After two months of heavy use, here are my thoughts and obervations on it:
Printer: The specs say up to 30 ppm (pages per minute) b&w, 25ppm color. After it warms up, I'd say it never went above 10 ppm even in b&w. Even on its highest quality, it disappoints. Text is clearly legible, but not something I'd feel good about showing a client. Color is woefully slow, and lacks both richness and clarity.
Scanner: From a mechanical perspective, both the ADF and the flatbed actually work quite nicely. However, the old version of Paperport that it includes is slow, and creates HUGE files. OCR quality isn't worth using. I purchased ReadIRIS separately, and have been delighted with its speed and accuracy on this MFC.
Fax: Works well. Could use more menu detail.
Summary: If your most important need is a printer, look elsewhere. If you need a backup printer, but a decent scanner, this is pretty good, once you get better software.

Brother MFC-7420 Flatbed Laser Multi-Function Center
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is my review for the sister model of MFC7420 (7820N), the only difference in 7820N is better scan resolution & Networking capabilities, the rest is the same, so my review should apply to MFC 7420 as well.
WoW ! This must be the best MFC out there. I have owned several canon, hp, lexmark MFC, photo printers, fax machines etc. This machine is it. All you need is this MFC & a separate photo printer. you are all set.
1. This is a laser MFC - scan(color), copy, fax, print
2. very fast for home/small office use
3. very compact - very space saving
4. Network ready - other computers on network can use all functions of this.
5. unlimited tech support. not just 1-year like HP/canon.
6. Machine feels sold & feels it will last long
7. All fax, copy, scan can be operated either from machine buttons or pc software interface.
8. installation was breeze
9. software is top notch. very intuitive
10. tested print, copy, scan & fax - AWESOME AWESOME.
11. they don't outsource cust support to india
12. only regrets: no duplex, no separate output tray, but from a compact machine like this, you can't expect output tray.
13. This MFC is clearly the winner. nothing else.
14. $50 cartride takes you upto 2,500 pages. not bad
15. Auto feeder works flawlessly
16. buy from local office depot store when they give $40 gift card with it.
17. you can connect any answering machine, so all you need is one line for phone callss & fax. this machine shows whether it is a phone call or fax. can use distinctive ring too.
18. backlit LCD menu
19. if you network with this printer, you don't need to buy USB cable
20. 32mb memory for printing, huge memory for fax.
21. super fast fax speed
22. Excellent looks.
23. DEDICATED MAC SUPPORT, although i only used it for Windows.
why didn't i know about Brother earlier ?

Samsung SCX-4100 Laser Multifunction Review

Samsung SCX-4100 Laser Multifunction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was in the market for a personal copier to support my real estate business. The requirements? Have to be small enough for me to carry around, inexpensive cost-per-page and affordable. This product fits the bill and it even adds printing and scanning capability as a bonus!
The print quality is surprisingly crisp for both text and image, off-the-glass copy is excellent and the scanner performs very well.
The scan function didn't work when I connect this printer through parallel port (bi-directional issue?), but all taken care off when I switch to USB. Also notice the paper tray door is kind of hard to open. I suggest using their provided software to get the most out of this printer!
Overall I highly recommend this for people whom looking to have a multifunction printer with small space and budget that print a lot of text or B/W document and doesn't need color capability.

It used to be that you needed a separate machine for each of your needs. Thank goodness that's no longer the case. With multifunction machines like the SCX-4100 from Samsung, you can still get the high-quality results you have come to expect from separate peripherals, while saving both space and money. The SCX-4100 can print, copy, and scan, all in one easy-to-use machine.
The monochrome laser printer has a 600 x 600 dpi resolution, with print times up to 15 ppm. (All reported speeds are maximums. Actual speeds will vary.) The color CIS scanner has a 4,800 x 4,800 dpi maximum enhanced scan resolution (600 dpi optical) and has a 24-bit color depth and a 256-level grayscale. The scannersupports the TWAIN standard and delivers scan times of about 27 seconds (line art). The copy feature allows you to reduce or enlarge your original anywhere from 50% to 200%, while a multi-copy feature lets you print up to 99 copies at a time.
The SCX-4100 has a 250-sheet input capacity and 50-sheet output capacity, and accepts a wide variety of original media, including plain paper, transparencies, envelopes, labels, and stocks (card, thick, thin, bond, preprinted, and colored). Both USB and parallel ports are provided, and a 10,000-page maximum duty cycle is able to handle light-to-medium use environments. The 110 to 240 VAC 50/60 Hz power supply consumes about 300 watts, while noise levels are less than 49 dB during normal operation.
