Epson GT 2500 Document Imaging Color Scanner (B11B181011) Review

Epson GT 2500 Document Imaging Color Scanner (B11B181011)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third scanner within the past year.
First was the highly regarded Fujitsu Snapscan. It worked really well for about 6 months on normal letter size documents. But after that, the automatic paper feeder started grabbing more than one sheet at a time.
I cleaned it following instructions and even sent it in for service, but the problem only got worse. Even three sheet scans seized up in the middle when the feeder grabbed all three and jammed. I couldn't finish many jobs at all.
And forget about odd shaped docs - it would take them, but no matter how they went in, they scanned in wild, off center angles, making reading them nearly impossible. The scanner is now somewhere in the garage.
Next: a Brother multi-function center, purchased primarily for its scanner capabilities.
Except that it draws more than a thousand watts of power. And it blew up my battery back-up power system. Posts on the net indicated this wasn't a fluke, so that one went back.
So, now to the new Epson. Here's what I found:
1. After the first half dozen scans (during which the machine made scary loud groaning noises), it now runs very quietly and dependably. Guess I'll never know what those first ones were about, but I'm not worried about it.
2. The quality of the scans is excellent. I advise setting the software for light sharpening.
3. However, there is a little too much scanner interface involvement. You should be able to set all of the various choices (paper size; color vs. black and white; where to save it, etc) and then store that setting and tell the machine to just keep scanning that way until you change it. Instead, you have to approve it for every scan. It only takes a second, but it's annoying.
4. Ironically, the software doesnt stop at the one place you do want it to wait for you - after the scan and before saving, to give you a chance to rename it. It just numbers and saves the file automatically.
This is really dumb, as you have to reopen it and rename it each time(though you can set the software to automatically reopen the file where you keep the scans so it's one step less to do this).
I have to believe they'll fix this in a software update, as this is a new product. I've registered my vote on this and if you buy this product, you should too.
Other than that, I'm very happy with the scanner. It also works well with magazine articles as well as regular bond paper. It's not as fast as the Fujitsu and it requires a couple of extra steps per scan, but... this one works! (and really weird stuff can always go on the flatbed, which the Fujitsu didn't have)
I'm keeping this one and using it to start a project I've been wanting to do for a couple of years now: scan the contents of my file cabinets onto my hard drive.
After that, I'm gonna back it all up on another drive and toss out the originals.
Sweet.

Xerox Travel Scanner 100 Mobile 600 DPI USB Scanner (XTRAVEL-SCAN) Review

Xerox Travel Scanner 100 Mobile 600 DPI USB Scanner (XTRAVEL-SCAN)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use a flat bed scanner at the office but, since I have started traveling much more, I wanted a portable solution to scanning receipts while on the road. This one got some good reviews and I liked the form factor. It will scan full 8.5x11 documents (common at hotels) as well as the small register tapes (restaurants, etc...). It's fairly quick, the images are perfect for submitting to my client, and it fits in my computer bag right next to my 17" laptop. The fact that it's powered directly through the USB cable is perfect - no extra AC adapter to carry.
The applications that come with it are great, too. I love the drag-and-drop approach to building my single PDF of all my receipts. My customers do too. Very easy to work with - everybody can read PDFs.
Only reason it doesn't rate a 5-star rating is because it has developed a habit of generating a faint line on scans wider than 2 inches. If I clean it before every use (about a 3-5 minute process since it requires multiple cleaning passes and test scans), it's under control and works like new. However, the line seems to continually recur and annoying. Not bad enough to ruin the scan but, still, it shouldn't be doing it at all. I may contact Xerox to see what they think but too busy just now to do so.
Not a complete replacement for your flatbed scanner if you need high quality photo scanning but excellent for everything else.
Highly recommended.

Ectaco C-Pen 20 Handheld Scanner Review

Ectaco C-Pen 20 Handheld Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a scholar who works with books and other printed sources a lot, I have long been on the lookout for an easy way to scan text into my laptop. I've tried using both flatbed scanners and digital cameras for this purpose, but I've found both to be awkward and time-consuming. That's why I was pleased to discover the C-Pen 20 - it's not perfect, but it does the job quicker and more easily than any of the alternatives.
PROS:
- It's easy to use; you just press the pointer to the page and a light comes on to let you know that the sensor is active. You then sweep the C-Pen from left to right at moderate speed as if it were a highlighter, and it converts the text on the page into electronic characters on your computer.
- The text instantly appears wherever the cursor on your screen is located, so you can use this device with just about any Windows program (e.g., Word, Access, etc.).
- The recognition rate is higher than I thought it would be; it's better than 99% on book-sized text. In practical terms, this means that you'll get one or two errors on average per paragraph, but these flaws are easily corrected (particularly if your spell checker highlights them for you automatically).
- It's small and easily portable, so you can take it with you to libraries and archives with a laptop.
CONS:
- The character recognition is sometimes thrown off by underlining and other marks on the page.
- You must use it with a PC or laptop that has a USB port (it doesn't run on batteries like some scanning pens).
- Even though it recognizes just about every major language written in Latin, Cyrillic, or Greek letters, it can't handle older typefaces (like German Fraktur). It also has trouble recognizing some symbols (such as footnotes).
- You have to scan each line of text one at a time, so it's not necessarily the best solution if you need to copy many pages of text.
The bottom line is that the C-Pen 20 has been an excellent investment for me, and I recommend it to anyone who's looking for an easy way to transfer printed text into an electronic medium.

Ion 35mm Photo Negative and Slide Converter to PC (SLIDES2PC) Review

Ion 35mm Photo Negative and Slide Converter to PC (SLIDES2PC)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a large amount of my dad's 35mm slides, mainly from the 50's and 60's. I wanted to digitize them for him for a Christmas gift. I checked into services that do this professionally and found them to be out of my price range as I literally have around 700-900 that I want digitized. Next step was to look for a scanner to do it myself.
The best (Nikon w/Digital ICE) also out of my price range. So I landed on the Ion Slide2PC. I figured, this would at least get them into 'viewing' quality. At 5megapixels in a decently high res right?
I also got a rocket blaster and a static master to clean the slides before hand and cleaned each before starting with a puff of air and a brush of the static master.
I put the slide2pc the on it's highest setting and went to work. While they aren't Nikon quality, I must say that I'm impressed with the output. I wish that I could tweak the lighting a little so the under and over exposed would come out a little better but with a little photo shop magic, I'm even able to fix those up.
Most are print quality - not perfection as the lines aren't as sharp as perhaps they would be with a more expensive scanner, but many look excellent.
Really I was patient. I gave it the requisite 5 seconds for the white balance between snapshot and transfer. and I did all in .tiff so I could edit each if necessary.
I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to save money as it's quick and effective at digitizing your slides. I have not tested it on film negatives.

Belkin F5U002V1 USB Parallel Printer Adapter Review

Belkin F5U002V1 USB Parallel Printer Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There clearly seems to be much confusion regarding whether this product works with Vista. Hopefully I can help clear that up shortly.
I hadn't found this cable on Amazon yet when I purchased it. A number of reviews for other USB Parallel port adapters on Amazon referred to this cable as the one to buy instead of the particular brand they were reviewing. Since I couldn't find it on Amazon however (Amazon's search didn't turn it up for me on many attempts), I bought it elsewhere. I finally found it (and these reviews) quite by accident on Amazon only after buying it elsewhere (Amazon, are you paying attention? This is more evidence that your search capability could use some improvement). For that reason, I hadn't seen the reviews on Amazon (below) which say that this cable DOES NOT work with Vista nor had I seen Belkin's comments that it is NOT Vista compatible.
Thing is.....it is working fine with my old printer and my Windows Vista Home Premium system!
There are a number of possible explanations for the inconsistencies. First of all, Belkin's customer service may be flat wrong about the product being incompatible with Vista and they just don't know how to install it properly. More about that a little later in this review. It wouldn't be the first time a customer service department doesn't have good knowledge about their products. I've been running into that a lot recently with new products it seems.
Another explanation may be that Belkin has upgraded the cable to work with Vista (it that's true, they still haven't upgraded their documentation however because mine makes no mention of Vista). My model number is a F5U002v1. Another reviewer on Amazon pointed out that the "v1" may stand for a Vista version of the cable (the older designation is apparently F5U002). I have no way of knowing if that's true or not but it certainly sounds plausible.
There is clearly much confusion in the documentation regarding this product however. I bought mine in August of 2008 and as I mentioned earlier, it is working fine with my Windows Vista system (even though there seems to be plenty of documentation and experiences indicating that it shouldn't be). I have two printers. One is a new Dell printer which has only a USB connection and connects to my CPU through a USB port. The second is an older IBM 4029 laser printer which only has a parallel port connection. That is the printer I have connected through the Belkin parallel port cable to another USB port on the CPU.
I was only able to get it working under Vista however because Vista already included a driver for my IBM 4029 printer (look under Vista "Control Panel" then to "Printers" then "Add Printer" then "Add a Local Printer" and look under the list of printers). Under "Add a Local Printer" it will say "Use this option only if you don't have a USB printer (Windows automatically installs USB printers when you plug them in)".
Note that this message apparently ONLY APPLIES to printers with native USB cables, such as my newer Dell. With this Belkin adapter cable and an old, parallel port cable you will still need to "Add a local printer" as if it didn't have a USB port.
If your parallel port printer type is listed under the "add a local printer" list, Vista includes a driver for your printer and you don't need any additional software from the printer manufacturer. If your printer is not on that list however, try selecting "generic printer" and look on the installation diskette that comes with your printer to see if it has a driver that it says will work with Vista (or look at your printer manufacturer's website to see if they have a Vista compatible driver available for download).
Chances are good that you can at least find one on the printer manufacturer's website. If you have driver software from BOTH the manufacturer's web site as well as one pre-installed on Vista, you should always choose the one provided by the manufacturer's web site. This is because while the windows native driver may work, the one from the manufacturer's site may support extra features or fix some known glitches.
So, to summarize... you do need to have *BOTH* a Vista compatible printer driver (as mentioned previously either already in the Vista "add printers" list or from the printer manufacturer) *AND* this Belkin Cable. The documentation for the cable doesn't really do a good job of pointing that out.
Once you have both, the trick to installing it is:
A:
Plug in the parallel port end of the Belkin cable to your printer and the USB end into your computer. Vista should display a message something like - "Vista has installed your device and it is ready for use". You are NOT DONE yet however. Your still have to go to part B:
B:
Go to "Control Panel", "Printers", "Add Printer", "Add Local Printer" and select "use an existing port". A drop down list of port names such as "LPT1", etc. will appear. Select the proper "Virtual Printer Port" from the list. It will probably be "USB001" unless you have more than one printer attached via a USB port. Mine is "USB002" because I have two printers and the parallel port printer was the second one attached to a USB port.
Once you have done that, go to "next", select your printer from the list and install the driver according to the instructions and/or the comments I made earlier. Once that is done, your printer should appear as available in "printers" and you should be able to select it and print to it.
I hope these instructions are helpful. Note that my comments ONLY APPLY to installing a printer under Vista!!! Installation instructions for previous versions of Windows are included with the cable and are also available on Belkin's web site. I have rated this cable as 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons. One is because the documentation is so poor and does not address use with Vista.
The other is because the installation CD-ROM included with the cable (for use in installing on earlier editions of Windows) is too small (less than 3") to fit in my CD-ROM drive (which is vertically mounted). It is not the full size CD-ROM pictured and had I needed it, it would have been useless to me.

Iris USOA447 IRIScan Express 2 Portable Scanner Review

Iris USOA447 IRIScan Express 2 Portable Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nota bene: I am a Mac user, and this review is only about the products interaction with Mac OS 10.5.
The IRIScan express 2 beats the DSmobile 600 hands down in terms of Mac compatibility, but that was still not enough to encourage me to keep the product. Despite the great OCR functionality of Readiris Pro 11 and the promise of convenience of Cardiris (which I did not get a chance to use), the software interface and workflow has a "we just managed to get this out the door" feeling to it. The interface is not at all Mac-like, and the scanner does not, on the Mac, provide a TWAIN or Image Capture driver. That lack forces you to use the provided clunky applications to make any scan.
Despite Readiris's outstanding OCR performance, the PDF output is less than optimal. The Windows software included with the DSmobile 600 (the only portable, sheet-fed competitor that claims Mac functionality [and doesn't deliver]) produces perfect facsimiles of scanned pages and adds OCR text to the PDF that allows you to search and index it without losing the character of the original document, just like Amazon's "Search Inside This Book" feature for those of you who haven't experienced PDFs like this. Readiris Pro does not have this feature. Its PDFs are what you would get if you took the text document output and printed to PDF: disappointing and not at all useful for archival purposes, my motivation for purchase.
Also, the scanner is EXTREMELY slow, and all-caps are deserved in this case. The scanner takes more than 60 seconds per page. This is impossible to use if you are looking at a stack of documents you need to digitally archive. Enough said. If you are looking to do paperless office on the Mac platform, you need to use either a sheet-fed all-in-one machine from Canon or HP or, even better, get the Fuji ScanSnap, which at $600+ is insanely priced but works like a charm... so I've heard.

Visioneer Mobility Scanner CLR 300DPI Review

Visioneer Mobility Scanner CLR 300DPI
Average Reviews:

I purchased this for scanning black and white documents at a location where setting up my laptop and page scanner was too cumbersome. This does exactly what I need. The paper feeds almost perfect every time. Image quality is very good (300dpi). A full page scans in around 10 seconds. There are only 2 problems I have with this unit. First, the scanner timestamp seems to reset itself so the dates are no where near when I scanned the item and there doesn't seem to be any way of setting the date in any software or the unit itself. Second, when you clear the memory card or USB the filenames revert back to 1 (IMG_0001) This is a pain for me because I scan documents daily and when sorting the files into their various folders, I tend to end up with a lot of duplicate file names. All in all if you need an extremely portable unit to scan in a few single sheets of paper this is for you. If you are looking to scan large quantities of pages then I would suggest getting something with an auto-feed.

Genius Colorpage-SF600 Sheet fed Scanner Review

Genius Colorpage-SF600 Sheet fed Scanner

This is a great little scanner. It scans anything from a business card up to at least a letter size page. I haven't tried a legal size page. I did have a hard time getting it to run on my computer which has the Windows 7 operating system. I was basically trying to pound a square peg into a round hole. After about 2 hours I finally got smart and went to the company site, [...], and downloaded the correct drivers. From there it was a cinch, only took about 2 minutes to have it up and running. I recommend if you are running Windows 7 that you download the proper drivers first. It will save you a lot of frustration.

Xerox DocuMate 515 Flatbed Color Scanner Review

Xerox DocuMate 515 Flatbed Color Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased a Xerox Documate 515 on Feb. 26, 2010 as my old Visoneer 9450 is not compatible with Windows 7 - nor will it be. The Documate 515 was recommended as a compatible replacement. Read all the literature and ordered it. Arrived in quick order. Due to a heavy traveling schedule however, it was not installed until March 26th. I Flatbed scanned a test a page and it scanned just fine. I did not however use the ADF to scan multiple pages. I registered the product this very day - March 26th, 2010. Back to a heavy traveling schedule and the Scanner was not used again to scan even one document after its initial set-up on March 26th, until early April. I noticed that it would frequently "freeze" half way through a page. Had to turn it off and try again. Sometimes it would scan sometimes it would freeze - more often it "Froze".
Multiple page scans would freeze after the very first page. Most frustrating. Called Visioneer who recommended the scanner as a likely Visoneer 9450 replacement. They referreed me to PaperPort - manuafacture of the software used to scan my documents. They referred me to Xerox. Called Xerox on April 8th, 2010. They suggested I try connecting it to a Laptop and see if that corrected the problem. IT consultant was next scheduled for and came April 14th and we did just that, connected the USB cable to a laptop - still freezes with great regularity. Have to pull the page out of the scanner after turning it off and then on again.
Called Xerox tech support on April 14th - how long is the USB cable they asked? 10 feet I said. That is probably the problem they informed - try a 4 foot cable. At four feet the scanner has to damn near sit on top of the computer and if not on top, I have virtually no place to put the scanner anywhere near the computer. This corrected the problem completely - single sheet, multile page scans - no freezing. I informed Xerox Tech Support that my Visoneer was working just fine with a 12 foot USB cable with virtually no problems. USB 2.0 Specifications is 5 METERS I informed and that four feet is just barely over 1 METER. The requirement to use a 4 four cable was NO where in their literature and had I known this I never would have purchased this product. I was then informed that ALL Xerox Scanners require a four foot USB Cable - "might" work with a 6 foot but that's a "might" they informed.
Unacceptable - It is now April 14th and I am "Out of Warranty" for something I was never informed of - a four foot cable requirment. Nothing they could, or "would" do for me. Purchase a Xerox Sanner if you will - personally, I will never purchase another Xerox product of any kind for fear of what they don't tell me in their literature and also for their total lack of customer care.

Canon LiDE200 Color Image Scanner (2924B002) Review

Canon LiDE200 Color Image Scanner (2924B002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I decided to replace my old "all in one" printer which I was using as a scanner and a photocopying with the Canon LIDE200. I liked the specification: 4800x4800 dpi and a claimed 11 second scan rate.
The first thing I noticed as I was unpacking the scanner from the box was a mysterious WARNING about unlocking the lid of the scanner. The scanner was packed with the lid unlocked (as I found out later), and the instructions mentioned to keep the lid locked for travel or extensive handling. Fair enough, but it made me wonder if I had already done something bad to my scanner (I hadn't).
I then installed the software. I expected big things from Canon here, because generally they are pretty smart about software. The software, in terms of use, is much better than the software I had for scanning with my old scanner. The scanner has an "easy" setting that basically just scans at 300DPI without a fuss.If you want to scan at full resolution, you have to open the "driver" that exposes a page with all the bells and whistles to let you really fine tune your scan and set the highest resolutions.
All this was fair enough, however I found a few minor disturbing problems with the software. Firstly, once you've opened the "driver", it's not intuitive to figure out how to get back to the "no brainer" mode. Also, when you want to save your scan, it always seems to default to the scanning library it sets up. If you override it, it doesn't stay "changed". This is a slight pain. I always wonder who they hire to test and give feedback, because I always feel like I'm pointing out what should be the "obvious" to large companies like Canon (actually I really love Canon - so take no offense!).
As far as scanning speed is concerned, the scanner does indeed scan a 300 dpi page in about 11 seconds (that's pretty fast folks). However, the estimate does not include the 3 seconds the software takes to respond to the command to begin scanning (I'm running a duo core processor - no slouch) and the few seconds it takes to save the image. All in all, speed is impressive.
Now on to document quality. I tried scanning a few brochures and to be honest, at 300 DPI I wasn't super impressed with the result. So I went into the "driver" at set the scanning at maximum resolution (4800 x 4800). You get a pretty good result at that resolution, but by no means was I blown away. Perhaps more "tweaks" of the driver is needed. I noticed that the scanner attempts to "improve" the picture (which it does) but some of the detail of the text was a little off (brochure had images and text). I wondered if the lid of the scanner was making really good contact. Next time I will add a few pages of plain white paper behind the image and see if it makes a difference.
I tried scanning a printed document, and compared it to a printed document I scanned using my old scanner. I scanned the image to a PDF and low and behold, a major, major improvement (at 300 DPI).
So, I gave the scanner four "stars". Why not five? Well, the software is much easier to use than my old scanner, but still not without a few minor "quirks".This is a great scanner for scanning documents. How well it will actually scan and reproduce a photo is still in question, and perhaps I need to learn how to use the driver software better. I don't think I could scan an original photo without seeing some degradation in quality.
I'd be interested to hear other people's experiences regarding copying photos. I hope I'm wrong in my assessment, because I really expected a 4800x4800 scanner to reproduce "dead on" copies of a photo.

Wolverine F2D300 7.3MP 35mm Slides and Negatives to Digital Image Converter (Blue) Review

Wolverine F2D300 7.3MP 35mm Slides and Negatives to Digital Image Converter (Blue)
Average Reviews:

It sure looks like it should have a motor in it (considering the cost and that the box says that it is a two-step operation), but it doesn't. You have to physically push each image through, then press the same button twice (once to scan, a second time to save) -- that's a 3-step operation for each image, not a 2-step. It does not scan, but photographs slides / film that are backlit (pay attention that the box says "converter" not "scanner"), so it is rather fast to capture images, but at a price: quality.
The quality is at best mediocre and the tray slides and wiggles even when inserted, such that your slides can often look slightly crooked every time. Another annoyance is that you have to turn the scanner off to disconnect the scanner from the computer, or to get back to the main screen after using the scanner. If your images require color correction, you have to do them one at a time, which isn't much of an issue if you have a computer and photoshop, but if the intent of the machine was to bypass the computer, it's not very convenient.
There are flatbed scanners out there, designed to scan slides and film at extremely higher resolutions. They take much longer, but the quality is exceedingly better.
This product appears to specifically target people who want to make smallish (4x6) prints or to display on a TV screen, and that's it. If you thought that this might be a good way to digitize your Ektachrome slides for posterity, you're looking at the wrong product.

HP G4010 ScanJet Photo Scanner Review

HP G4010 ScanJet Photo Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed this hardware on a new computer running Win'XP so I had nothing that first needed to be uninstalled. I chose the non-standard installation because I did not want HP's photo editing software (I have Adobe Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Album) and I have no use for the IRIS software for converting scanned documents into text files. The installation went smoothly and my document and 35mm slide scans were successful at the first attempt. 35mm slides can be scanned either mounted or unmounted. The scanner seems exceptionally easy to use and is a huge improvement over the ten year old scanner that it replaces. Everything about the scanner's appearance reflects very high quality and so far I am very satisfied indeed. The documentation that comes with the scanner is very limited, sufficient for the install but does not cover any of the adjustable scan settings - you have to go to the help files for that.

Visioneer RoadWarrior Mobile 600 DPI USB Scanner (RW120-WU) Review

Visioneer RoadWarrior Mobile 600 DPI USB Scanner (RW120-WU)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I looked closely at the NeatReceipts scanner before deciding on this one, but think made the right call.
I have been a Visioneer fan for some time, and I saw one of the Strobes used in my doctor's office and have been interested in one ever since.
The Strobes were overpriced so I never bought one, but broke down and got this one. I figured this was the low end of their line, since the documentation is for the RoadWarrior and the Strobe 100, but when I called Visioneer they told me this one has all the latest hardware in it and buying one of the other models would be a step backward. That made me feel better at least.
I should explain my decision: I used Quicken religiously and have always wanted a way to easily attach receipts to Quicken entries. (Older versions of Quicken had ways to, but they were all iffy and imperfect. Quicken 2007 does allow more direct scanning, although it, too, is pathetic but workable and does work with this scanner). I mention this because it seemed to me that the NeatReceipts scanner's claim to fame is that it reads the receipts and stores them and you can search by them. That's not ultimately what I need. My data is already sorted and I don't need to OCR the receipts--just store them for when I want to see them. Plus, buying this scanner got me PaperPort 11 (I have been using 9, refusing to upgrade due to cost) at no additional cost, which I do use extensively also. A two-for-one deal!
The scanner is actually quite nice. It may not be perfect, or a flatbed, but when I truly look at what I want one for, this is it. I've scanned over 200 receipts with it already and dozens of other documents. It's not as bulky or hard to place on my limited desk space as my old flatbed scanner (Visioneer 9320-USB). Plus, there's no "warm up" time which I always hated.
However, on the flip side, After the unit scans the document quite quickly, it pops up "Converting", which does take way too long for my taste. For a scan that takes say 10 seconds (for an 8.5x11), the conversion process takes 20-30. I THINK that time is dependent on what format you choose to scan to (i.e. Searchable PDFs take longer than PDFs), but I haven't found a format that just "pops" in to Paperport without conversion (I'll note here when you scan from Quicken 2007 into Quicken there is no conversion time--I like that!)
I have also scanned more than a few color photographs with this unit that have come out nicely. I was afraid this was mostly a B&W scanner, but it does well with color as well it seems.
As for difficulties feeding, I can say it is an art. I get more straight than crooked, and Paperport does do a good job straightening them for you, but it is annoying to have to start over. I wouldn't let that "quirk" of this hardware deter you from choosing this unit.
All in all, I am pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to others considering it.

NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner and Digital Filing System for Mac Review

NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner and Digital Filing System for Mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received an advance-release of this product at WWDC08 in June 2008, and I've been playing with it ever since. It is top notch in every regard. The hardware is small and only uses the USB port [no need to find an A/C plug!]. The software is even better, as it grabs data right from the scanned receipt; no need for retyping in most cases!
This is a high quality product, and feels like something Apple has made, as even the packaging is tidy and well organized.
I highly recommend this over the currently offered shareware solutions. The software is really top notch, and the scanner is portable enough to fit in a laptop bag easily.

Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB 2400 Pro Scanner Review

Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB 2400 Pro Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been searching, tediously for a wide format scanner for over a year and the cheapest I could find that worked with Windows 7 was and an Epson for $1,047. And Honestly I couldn't afford that. I'm a freelance cartoonist who works on large sized Bristol. I gave up hope and desided to save some money to purchase that Epson in a few months.
Then out of nowhere Mustek comes out with an upgrade to their old wide format scanner. For only [...] bucks, I was in awe to see its specs and price. I ordered it right away, almost not thinking twice. The Software is a bit confusing, but if you worked with any kind of scanner in the past it isn't impossible to grow accustom to. It looks nice and isn't an eye sore as a lot of others were. But more importantly was the quality of scanning. I took out an old comic page and scanned it as soon as I had it connected and the software was installed.
The only thing I am a little disappointed in was that you can't select the DPI specifically. It has 3 settings, "Normal" "Fine" and "Very Fine. I'm assuming very fine is the 2400 DPI that was listed on its specs. Honestly that's my only complaint as of now... I had it for going on one week and I'm very pleased with it.
Once you have the software completely installed, you don't even need to open up the program when you want to scan. You simply have to open the scanners lid and PRESTO! The program automatically loads on screen. It scans pretty quickly as well, my pages are highly detailed with hatching and values, it takes roughly 30 seconds per page and all I have to do it load it into Photoshop and touch it up a little as I always to with any scan and the image is perfect. It also has some sound effects that remind me of a lot about Samsung Products, You know it has a retro sounding NES feel to it, which I personally like and think it an interesting touch.
I give this a 4/5 because... The DPI settings is a little confusing, the physical frame is a little delicate frame and because I rarely give out 5's. But I'd rather save the 700 - 1500 bucks and get this then a 5 star Epson. I haven't heard much of Mustek and this is my first product of theirs, but as far as I can see it's a very promising company which made a promising product that saved me a butt load of cash. And this Artist recommends it, especially for you comic artist out there looking for a cheap but good big boy scanner.

Canon 2454B002 imageFORMULA DR-2010C Compact Color Scanner Review

Canon 2454B002 imageFORMULA DR-2010C Compact Color Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
this could be a great product. It's affordable, it does duplex, and it's fast. Shortly after I started using it however, on multi-page scans some of the pages were blurry to the point of being unusable. I got a message that the page feeding assembly needed changing out, so I ordered a new assembly and changed it out, but with no improvement. So there seems to be a problem with the feeding mechanism, so some scans are blurry. This is a major problem. If it weren't for that defect, which I don't know if it's just my machine or widespread, it would be a great scanner.
This is a few weeks later. I am still having problems with the feeding mechanism, even after replacing it. I actually get more useful scanning out of my all-in-one Canon mf-6550. I love Canon, but I am not having a good experience with this dedicated scanner.
