I am an amateur photographer and a professional Software Engineer. I purchased this printer as a general purpose printer and as a low cost photo printer. My home network which consists of 5 Windows XP computers and 1 Mac OS X computer (mine). I connected the printer to my network using the built in ethernet port. All of the testing I performed was over the network and I never tried the USB port. The printer does everything it advertises and does it well. I tested printing, scanning, and card reader functionality using OS X Tiger, OS X Leopard, Windows XP, and the printer worked flawlessly regardless of the OS I was using. You just need to make sure that you download and install the latest and greatest driver for the particular OS you are using. I also tried scanning directly using Photoshop CS3 on OS X Leopard and everything worked perfect.
One of the reasons I purchased the MP970 was for low cost photo printing. I also own an Epson R2400 which is a semi-professional dedicated photo printer. The R2400 is expensive to purchase, and expensive to operate. I was curious how the MP970 photo quality would compare to the R2400 so I directly compared photos printed on the Canon MP970 to the same photos printed on the Epson R2400. The Canon MP970 prints great pictures, but it is simply does not produce the same quality pictures as the R2400. I printed pictures from Photoshop in a color managed environment using Ilford Smooth Pearl Photo Paper and compared the R2400 to the MP970. The Canon MP970 did very well but Epson R2400 was definitely the winner - which was the expected result. The Epson had better highlights, better shadows, and more neutral mid tones. Notwithstanding, the MP970 produced very respectable prints which would be acceptable in all but the most demanding applications. The bottom line is that if you are really serious about excellent photo quality, this is not the printer for you. If you want a low cost way to produce very respectable prints, this printer is definitely for you. I feel that the Canon MP970 fully meets or exceeds my quality expectations for a low cost photo printer. And, as an added bonus, the MP970 is way cheaper to operate than my R2400 because it uses a lot less ink. As an example of how I use it, it's a lot more cost effective to print 25 Christmas cards on my MP970 than it is to print the same 25 cards on the R2400.
I only gave the printer 4 stars because it powers itself off every 2 to 4 days for no reason. Canon technical support confirmed that the printer should not power itself off and sent me a new replacement printer under warranty. Unfortunately, the replacement printer also powers itself off for no reason. I tried several different electrical outlets in my office and it did not fix the problem. Also, no other devices in my office power themselves off. This review has been here for a while now and several people posted comments and said that their MP970 printers also intermittently power off.
Update on Intermittent Power off Issue:
After about 9 months of operation, I ended up moving the printer from my office to my Son's room (for unrelated reasons). For unexplained reasons, the printer stopped intermittently powering itself off after I moved it to my Son's room. The printer has been in my Son's room for roughly 3 months now and it has not powered itself off once. Weird.
I have had the printer for roughly 1 year and I have not had any problems except for the power issue mentioned above.
Here is what the printer does:
- Double sided printing
- Ethernet connectivity
- USB Connectivity
- Initiate a scan from the printer or the computer
- Scan to the disk on your computer, scan to email, scan to PDF
- Copy
- Read camera memory cards. Access the cards via network or USB
- Scanner is compatible with Photoshop CS3 on OS X
- Compatible with OS X Tiger, OS X Leopard, Windows XP, Windows Vista
- 2 paper trays: Cassette in the bottom, open paper tray in the rear
- Will make borderless photo prints
Here is what the printer does not do:
- Does not fax
- Does not have an auto document feeder for the scanner
- Canon does not supply Linux drivers, but I have heard that Linux drivers may be available from other sources (see comments made by others about this review for more information).
- Wireless Ethernet is not directly supported. This printer connects to your network with an Ethernet cable.

Canon Color imageCLASS MF8350Cdn All-in-One Printer (3555B001AA)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm one unhappy customer.
I've had several laser printers before this one, and it's adequate in terms of its functions. However, the Canon seems to have created a business model that enables them to make most of their profits from the sale of replacement toner cartridges. In the past, I've gotten around this by buying a cartridge refill kit: you melt a hole in the side of the cartridge with a special tool, refill the cartridge with (much less expensive) toner, tape over the hole and you're on your way.
In this game of countermeasures and counter-countermeasures, Canon has now installed a counter chip in its cartridges. At a certain number of copies, the machine gives you an out-of-toner message AND JUST QUITS! No warning and no "light" copies to get you by.
When I attempted to refill the black cartridge, I discovered two things. First, it was more than half-full when the chip decided that it needed to be replaced. I'll control myself and refrain from disclosing my emotional reaction when I realized how much toner I was forced to throw away.
The second thing was that when I refilled the cartridge I expected, perhaps naively, that the cutoff device would sense that the cartridge was now full. OK, so maybe I was dropped on my head shortly after birth.
Some investigation has revealed that the chips are encrypted, such that third-party manufacturers haven't yet been able to create reasonably priced substitute cartridges or replacement chips to defeat the copy cut-off.
The bottom line is that I'm stuck paying on the order of $90 for each of four cartridges, three color and one black. The manufacturing cost for these cartridges is about $15. The company can make nothing on the actual machine and because of the rip-off profits on the consumable cartridges, finds the overall product line immensely profitable.
I've considered dropping this printer from the roof of my house, but it's so heavy that I'd have to set up a pulley rig.
Needless to say, I will be very careful when I replace this printer to make sure that I can refill the cartridges myself in the next brand that I buy.
==================
11/30/10 Update: I replaced the black toner cartridge only 2 months ago, and with fairly light usage, the display reports that the black cartridge's toner is low! The cartridge is half-full or more. However, the counter chip has caused the machine to stop printing AT ALL. No way around it.
Worse, When I print in B&W or color, the edges of the pages are smeared with reddish & yellowish colors. It's bad enough that it's making the copies hard to read. I use the printer at home and sometimes print documents to carry with me for later reading. Ugh!
The machine is out of warrantee, so I will have to pay for any repairs. Since estimates tell me that the cost of repair is a sizeable fraction of the cost of a new machine, I'm getting rid of it.
I'm planning to ship it back to Canon with a letter telling them two things.
1. I will never buy any other canon product.
2. They may keep the machine since to me, it's now a big, ugly, heavy, expensive paperweight.

HP CM2320fxi Color LaserJet Multifunction Printer Review

HP CM2320fxi Color LaserJet Multifunction Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've long been a holdout on multi-function devices as they never were good at more than one thing.... a good printer, but lousy fax or lousy scanner or even lousier copier. So my office has always had a copier, fax, scanner and printer. In fact, I've had two printers -- a fast b/w laser printer and a color inkjet printer.
Well, that's all changed with this MFP device. Copies are good (both color and black/white. Scans are much easier than my existing computer attached scanner (just hit a button and the scanned images are emailed to anyone), prints are fast, single or double sided, and in color or black/white. Faxing is just as easy.
I'm very happy with it. My wife is very happy with it. My kids are very happy with it.
I've seen on other sites where people had trouble installing the software, but I didn't have any such trouble. Now, for most of the computers in the house, I just installed the printer drivers, while for my Windows 2003 server and my Windows XP laptop, I installed the entire software package so I could play with all the bells & whistles. In either case I had no problems.
Definitely recommend the product. Makes it easy to get rid of any other office equipment (other than the shredder, of course).

Easy to setup. Got it today and I love it. The wireless feature extends to my walk-in closet. That is where I decided to keep the printer. So far, no problems. I tried scanning and it is awesome. It lets you choose the software you wish to save your scanned document to. The copying is super easy. I mean, this is a great product overall. And, last but not least, I checked the prices of the ink cartridges, and compared to other brands, these are very affordable. Highly recommended printer!

Xerox Phaser 3200MFP/B Multi-Function Printer/Copier/Fax/Scanner Review

Xerox Phaser 3200MFP/B Multi-Function Printer/Copier/Fax/Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We have owned this product now for about 6 months. It is used lightly in a small business environment connected to an Apple Extreme Base Station supporting both PCs and Macs. Setting the device via its web interface is modestly intuitive IF you have a background in network and pc basics. Several of the features though do not work correctly (Fax delay and User id for scan).
The machine works fairly well with pcs and the scan and fax features are available via the network. For the Mac, forget it. Though our sales rep insisted that it does work with OSX, it does not. The only feature available is print via the network. Scanning and fax must be done by connecting the Mac with a USB cable and sadly, with the latest update of OSX, even that no longer works.
More importantly, using the scanning feature via the small LED interface on the machine is very frustrating and time consuming. Scanning a document for email (after it has been setup, this will take you a while) works only if you don't want to send a copy to yourself as well, otherwise, it aborts. Recently we printed a short (4 page) document on a hot humid day and the machine jammed. Not a big deal, they all do sooner or later. The problem is that the feed mechanism is so poorly designed and virtually inaccessible by a user that we had to call Xerox service to come and repair it (a modes fee that would have been free had we taken the machine to the service center and waited) which required significant disassembly of the machine. 3 pages had wrapped around the feed roller and had to be cut out with a knife thus damaging the rubber roller (which they did not have in stock) in the process.
The reason we chose this printer is because Xerox was aggressively pricing the unit against the HP and Canon and Xerox's former reputation. Bad choice. This product is designed very poorly from its arcane software to its badly thought out drive mechanism. To give credit where credit is do, when it does work, it prints quickly and clearly.
This machine is in no way a competitor to the other in class machines from HP or Canon (the others we looked at) and can not be recommended for any reason, even if all you have is a pc network.

HP Photosmart Premium TouchSmart Web All-in-One Printer Review

HP Photosmart Premium TouchSmart Web All-in-One Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted to like this, but I just do not think that the Web feature really justifies doubling the price of the prior Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One Printer, Scanner, Copier and Fax. (Model C309a)HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One Inkjet Printer (CC335A#ABA). Since the C309a is the model I am replacing this review is really a comparison of this new model over the old one. The old one is still readily available for about half the price of this - which is a really big difference. Also, the C309a - at half the price - has one feature missing here - an automatic document feeder. Why is that important? It is important if you want to be able to easily scan multi-page PDF documents. I can put a stack of papers on the C309a and they automatically run through the feeder (never once had a jam) and a multi-page PDF appears on my desktop. This new model is missing that. The lack of the document feeder also renders the fax absolutely useless. To send a fax you have to stand there and "scan" each page of the fax on the glass. It is hardly honest to call this a fax machine.
The specs between the two printers are exactly the same, except the C309a has the automatic document feeder and this one has the web interface. Also, the old model holds 125 pages of regular paper, but this one is down to 100 - a move totally in the wrong direction. Why can't they just design a printer tray (for a non-commercial printer) that holds a ream of paper (500 pages)? Also, this one is missing the special holder for printing CDs, but I never used that anyway.
The new model is smaller (good) and black (instead of a creamy white). The new model also has better drivers - which were (and still are) a MAJOR drawback of the old model. You can finally install a basic set of drivers that don't cripple functions, and don't add a bunch of junk software. This is a MAJOR improvement.
Print quality on both is absolutely amazing. Prints look just like they came from the photomat. Yes. They are that good. (although, unless you use the little flimsy retainer arm, they will drop on the floor once complete.)
I have mine hooked up through wi-fi and that works great. It is easily seen on all computers on my network that run Win7 and XP.
One negative (on this and the old version) is that you still need a computer to be on to do scanning - even to a network drive. The scanning software runs on a computer, not locally on the printer. Copying, faxing and printing can be done without a computer.
OK. What about the web interface? Well, my personal take is that it is a huge gimmic intended to get you to print more and use more ink. Things take forever to find on the touch interface and it would really be about a thousand times faster just to use a computer. Of course, if you - for whatever reason - only have your computer in a far-off room, this might proove handy if the printer is in a more high-traffic area of the house. But is that really a problem? And would you really put your printer far away from your computer? Not likely. I found the touchscreen slow to respond and - although beautiful to look at - I just didn't get the need for the web interface. The only conclusion I can make is that HP wants you to print more stuff and use more ink.
The ink, by the way, goes VERY quickly. I printed a dozen or so 4x6 photos and a couple of 8x10 and the ink light warning started to go off. Of course, I really think the light goes off WAY too early. It does that on almost every printer I have ever used. I continue printing until I notice a problem with the output. I am guessing that the low ink warning is set to go off when you have used 40% of the ink. I was able to print another dozen photos (after the ink warning) before I noticed any ink deficiency. I could probably print another dozen before it wouldn't let me print anymore.
Overall, I really like the printer quality and the interface, but I can't get past the elephant in the room - the old model is half the price and has an automatic document feeder that this is missing.
The printer comes with a standard set of ink cartridges (not just starter inks), every cable you could need (including a massive power brick), and sample photo papers. It is all packaged in an eco-friendly cloth bag.
Overall, I can only give this three stars. If the old model never existed, I would probably give this four or five stars. The fact that they left off the automatic document feeder is a HUGE drawback for me. The "Touchsmart Web" is fun to play with, but really amounts to nothing more than a flashy gimmic. It fixes a problem that doesn't really exist - everything you would do through that interface is easier and faster on a real computer. Of course, I am also a person who would never just plug a memory stick into a printer and start printing - if you are, this might be a good printer for you.

HP OfficeJet 7410 All-in-One Review

HP OfficeJet 7410 All-in-One
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When they say All In One they're not kidding with this device. I have owned this device for a little over 2 months now and have put it through its paces. First of all this beast is HUGE. Its about the size of a 17-19" monitor width wise.It will fit snugly on top of a standard filing cabinet. Its fairly easy to assemble and get up and running. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS as they're printed or you'll have issues with your computer recognizing the drivers, especially if you're not using XP.
The print quality is outstanding! I have never seen a printer print such vivid colors or such realistic fleshtones. Especially one not considered a photo printer. But this is where the device shines. WIth a photo cartridge and HPs photo paper, I cannot tell the difference between a photo printed on this device and a professionally printed photo. The media slots are a plus. You can use them to open photos on your computer as well so it does act as a card reading device for your computer rather than hooking up your digital camera directly to the computer. It will NOT print a document from a media card however. You must print from the opened document.
Its copying abilities are good with minimal jamming in the feeder tray. Plus its so easy to open and pull out a jammed paper. You can specify how many copies and what quality you want them from either your computer or from the LCD panel. Very nice!
Its scanning capabilities are average to very good. There is no notching or markings as to where the page is oriented so getting started is a little tricky, but once you get it, very easy and fast scanning. Make sure you have a decent sleep mode time set or you'll be blinded by the scanning light that is always on unless the whole device is off or sleeping. Minor annoyance at worst.
Its faxing is well... faxing. It does the job. Its easy to set up, its easy to program, and it sends faxes. Need I say more.
Now the device also comes with some photo editing software which for someone who's buying a device like this, you should already have Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro or other editing program. The HP photo editing program is non-intuitive and cumbersome. The software is a serious resource hog on your computer. I would not install the software if you have a 650MHz dinosaur like I originally installed this on. It severely slowed down my computer. On a 3GHz with 1Gb RAM computer, no issues with the software at all. You are not forced to install the photo editing software, you can choose minimal install and it'll only install the drivers and the HP updater
Overall, if you have the means and the need for a powerhouse like this, I'd recommend it highly. Its sturdy, big and professional in appearance. Its wireless capabilities are a nice plus even though I dont use that. The 2 paper trays and the duplexer make it even nicer. A small minus, no override paper tray. So printing a single envelope or a single odd size sheet of paper is annoying. I had hoped that HP would have added this feature on such a feature rich product

Having installed 2 of these printers, I STRONGLY encourage you to go to the HP support site and download the latest printer software from www.hp.com/support. The CD's that came with the printers I installed simply didn't work on OS 10.3.9 and was not the latest software for OS 10.4 or 10.5. Using the CD's is frustratingly long and in the end, pointless. Unfortunately, you'll need broadband Internet because the software is over 180MB.
Also for those connecting the printer to the USB port of their Airport, I quote from the HP Support site:
"In general, HP printers that support networking and/or optional JetDirect print servers should print when connected to the USB port of a wireless router, such as the Apple Airport Express and Extreme Base Stations.
NOTE:Connecting to the USB port of a wireless router will provide a `print-only' function, meaning additional functions of your product, such as scanning or card slots, will not be available."
I was disappointed that my scanner didn't work when using the Airport hub. I still think the printer is a good value for the under $90 I paid on Amazon but the software that comes with it is frustrating difficult if you start with the CD's. I give HP zero stars for software installation, 3 stars for some of the software applications they give you and 5 stars for hardware and value; so 3 stars overall.

I have had the same problems as the other negative reviewer, with even more problems for a printer that is only about a year old. In addition, when I try to print legal sheets, it invariably jams up after 1 sheer. Talked to HP several times and it was always "you must be doing something wrong." I do know how to put paper in a printer. So I bought another printer to just print legal and continued to use the printer for letter sized printing and a lot of scanning. Then I installed Windows 7, and voila, no drivers for the printer. Printing regular b & w text moves along at about 1 page per minute, with a lot of delay in between pages. Also, the scanner does not work - no Windows 7 driver. Due to a prior software problem where a "fix" was promised for three years and never came, I have little faith in getting the drivers anytime soon. If you like big useless paper weights, you might like it.

Here's the deal... EPSON tricks you. Does it print well? Yes, but you can't print a B&W page without having color working. And worse yet, it uses teeny bits of color each time you print B&W so that you can't just NOT use color. I am a PhD student. I discovered this in the middle of printing an assignment. I scrambled to the lab at the university. Later I found out the whole thing STOPS and cannot be forced if you don't have ALL your ink loaded. So Cost of ink: Black: $16, colors, $13 each, times 4= $68; New canon printer at Wal Mart--which ALLOWS you to force B&W printing and has all the same functions of my EPSON rip off: $54.88.
Peace of mind: Priceless

Kodak ESP C310 All-In-One Printer (2858320) Review

Kodak ESP C310 All-In-One Printer (2858320)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first printer we received wouldn't even make it past step three of set-up. We sent it back for a replacement which did at least set up. However, this one has given us nothing but problems. It is so touchy about every setting that it takes forever to get anything to print. I've called customer service more times than I care to count by this point and not only do you wait forever but the representatives are extremely difficult to understand (and I usually have no issues understanding the help line from other countries) as well as completely unknowledgable about the products and services.
Never will I buy another Kodak. Don't waste your money.

HP Psc 1510 All-in-one Printer Review

HP Psc 1510 All-in-one Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This printer installed easily and functions nicely in every way. My only complaint is that the ink cartridges, while very inexpensive, contain very little ink. If you're doing occasional printing, scanning or copying this is a great printer. If you expect to print more than 1000 pages per month, be prepared to change the cartridge as often as your undies.
Did I mention that its a fine printer?

Mimio Digital Meeting Assistant WhiteBoard Scanner Review

Mimio Digital Meeting Assistant WhiteBoard Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Mimio whiteboard scanner was very easy to setup and get running. I was really surprised with how easy it was to use. When you get the product be sure to go check out the Mimio web site for software updates. The only problem I have is that you have to write kind-of big to make it legiable on the computer screen and some times if you not writing hard enough it doesn't pick up. But overall this is a very good product.

NEW 6 PORT NEC USB 2.0 HUB HIGH SPEED 480MB PCI CARD Review

NEW 6 PORT NEC USB 2.0 HUB HIGH SPEED 480MB PCI CARD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Stuck with using an older system which only had USB 1.1 available. Bought a VIA PCI hub but whenever I'd plug a USB storage device in it would bring the system to a crawl. Resolved the issue with this wonderful NEC PCI hub. No difference in system performance even when moving large amounts of data between internal and external drives or even between external drives. There may be better NEC USB hubs available, but for the money I'm completely satisfied.

Lexmark Wireless X6570 All-In-One Dual Cartridge Inkjet Printer Review

Lexmark Wireless X6570 All-In-One Dual Cartridge Inkjet Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This printer is NOT ideal for the person who wants a cheap and "economical" solution with all the features mentioned.I must admit, at the price range, I fell victim and tried this product, since I liked the built in wireless feature. What they do not tell you is that you MUST first hardwire your system to the printer FIRST to "import wireless" settings and then you can use it wirelessly. Well, to me, no biggie, right? Now, I had to tell my router to give it a permanent IP address because the printer kept changing up, and when you have 3 wireless notebooks, its aggravating since your computers dont know what is the current address to print to.
I've only printed a total of 21 pages, and wow! I AM AT 80% black ink left [all pages were incoming faxes]. This the not very impressive page yield, and the box mentions an average of 220 pgs avg yield of black pages. Wow. . . not so!
Not only that, this printer stays in my bedroom next to my desktop, and the printer makes random noises in the middle of the night, freaking me out. This printer had to go. Not to mention, the fax machine has to scan ALL the pages FIRST in the feeder and THEN when done scanning, then it begins transmission!
Did I also mention that the printer will randomly disconnect your phone calls because it wants to "detect a potential fax" even if "auto answer" is NOT enabled?
Also, the printer programs it's ink cartridges to STOP spraying after so many "drops" which means that even when it stops spraying, you may have residual ink that could have been used but the box even says this on the labeling!
This printer was most definitely a huge disappointment. The only GREAT feature was the automatic 2 sided printing feature. That was IT. Other than that, Lexmark. I am sorry. . . I am going back to HP. The REAL friend in my house!

Kodak EasyShare 5500 All-in-One Printer Print, Copy, Scan, and Fax (1600105) Review

Kodak EasyShare 5500 All-in-One Printer Print, Copy, Scan, and Fax (1600105)

(More customer reviews)
I WAS in the market for a replacement for my aging Lexmark X6100 All-In-One so I was very up beat when I found out that Kodak has come up with "cheap ink" AiO printer line.
I got the 5500 at Best Buy for what I though was a decent price of $199.
I set it up, printed a demo page, calibrated the printer and printed a diagnostic page. Printer was pretty slow and noisy but worked fine so far. Then I sent to it a 4x6 photograph and got the familiar and popular error saying that "the print head is missing or needs to be replaced". After reinstalling the print head over and over as suggested by the diagnostic message, I gave up after loosing 4 hrs of my life. Next day, I called the Customer Support at Kodak. The person with a very high level of certainty diagnosed my issue as a 'faulty print head' - seemingly a very popular cause with this printer. The print head was to arrive overnight - It arrived 3 days later. Replacing the head did not help. So, I went to the Kodak website and learned that there is a new firmware for this printer. After uploading the new firmware to the printer it went dumb. It was spitting out two sheets and then wrinkling up and spitting out more pages. No way to stop it except pulling the plug. So, I did. Next day, convinced that it must be an isolated issue, I went to Best Buy to replace the printer. I went through the exact same initial steps again and even got further this time. I was able to print 8 4x6 color photos in the "Best" mode, which looked pretty good as far as color saturation, but were a bit skewed. They also used up close to 50% of my color ink cartridge! So, I estimate that I can get probably only about 20-25 such prints out of a full color ink cartridge, which is much much less than the advertised 35. Then I tried the double sided print from a network computer and found out that the duplex option is disabled on every computer except the one to which the printer is physically connected. This is of course not advertised anywhere. So, I decided to test the double sided printing on the host. It was sloooooooooooow and not printing out a large part of the top of the page. So, I said to my self - Ok, there must surely be a good reason for the new firmware to be offered on Kodak's website. So, I uploaded it again and...the printer went dumb again...
I actually read the reviews on Amazon and still decided to give this printer a try "because it looked sooo nice and offered sooo much". I said to myself, what the heck - I am a pretty savvy techie - I can certainly do better than these "Amazon amateurs". Well, now I am joining what actually turned out to be a pretty wise Amazon crowd with my tail and ears curled all the way down in my disappointment.
Next day, I returned the second printer and am sticking to my old Lexmark for time being.
Kodak 5500 and especially its software and firmware are of poor quality. Endless errors, less than ideal prints, DON'T BUY. Consider yourself warned.
And...please read more interesting reviews of its sibling - the 5300 series.
One more thing - "friendly Kodak guy". Please spare me your comment...
