Hawking HMPS1U 1-Port USB 2.0 Print Server for Multi Function Printers Review

Hawking HMPS1U 1-Port USB 2.0 Print Server for Multi Function Printers
Average Reviews:

We purchased a Brother MFC-7340 to replace another brother AIO printer. Normally we would have purchased a network AIO but the price on the bother was so good, it made sense to purchase and upgrade the print server. We purchased the Hawking HMPS1U because it supported multifunction operations. THIS DOES WORK WITH WIN 7 64BIT although it took a little work to figure it out, Hawking tech support wasn't much help. The set up part for just printing is easy, if you know your way around network printers; just add a network printer, make sure you know the IP address of the print server and its easy. If you're just going to print, don't buy this print server, but if you want to share every function on this machine use this server. For Win 7 64 bit set up, DO NOT USE THE SOFTWARE ON THE CD. Go to Hawking's website and download and install the setup from there. Then download and upload the firmware to the print server and BANG it will see your printer and you're good to go! Unfortunately tech support, the manuals, or anybody else will not tell you that. If I would have known this it would have taken less than 15 to 20 minutes to set up two laptops sharing the setup.
Better documentation which would have lead to easier setup would have given this 5 stars.

Steer clear of this. Again, you get what you pay for. This is an inexpensive solution. I worked for 3 hours to install. Never scanned one slide. My computer will not recognize the scanner. I did tons of update, mess up my display settings and caused new errors. I consider myself a seasoned computer user. I would not recomend this, It is not even close to plug and play. Thank goodnes for windows restore function on my computer. :(

Lexmark Interpret S405 Wireless Multifunction Inkjet Printer Review

Lexmark Interpret S405 Wireless Multifunction Inkjet Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my second Lexmark printer. What I like about this, and my previous printer is that it is fairly easy to set up. There are separate buttons for each function, which are fairly easy to use. However There are 2 issues that you need to consider if you are considering this printer 1. The ADF is VERY sensitive, and tricky to use.If you are reading this because you are having a problem, push the paper very very slowly forward. The moment you hear the beep, stop, and push start for the scan to start.
2.It has separate ink cartridges, which sounds great, you don't have to pay for a whole cartridge if only one colour runs out. BUT if one colour runs out the printer stops working, which means you have to have spares.I found the printing speed very slow too, but for home use that isn't too serious.I would proceed with caution on this printer. I returned mine this morning, and am trying to decide what to replace it with.

Samsung Monochrome Multifunction Laser Printer (SCX-4623FW) Review

Samsung Monochrome Multifunction Laser Printer (SCX-4623FW)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I previously had Samsung SCX-4100 (connected to Windows XP PC). It worked well but was getting old (at least 5 years old).
I ordered new SCX-4623FW. After installation from the CD, I could print from the local
PC (connected via USB) and from other PCs in the house (wifi connection).
I am now using Windows 7 64 bit. The Samsung Scan Manager will not install on my PC. I tried to
install from the CD and also went to Samsung website and downloaded latest Scan mgr.
software. It would not install either. I installed the Samsung SmartThru4 software (which
worked correctly with SCX-4100) but it could not recognize the new SCX-4623FW printer.
I suspect the problems I am having are related to the fact that I am using Windows 7 64 bit (though
the Samsung website said the scan mgr (which I downloaded) would work with Windows 7 64 bit.

HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier (Q7311A#ABA) Review

HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier (Q7311A#ABA)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like most people, I wanted an all-in-one to replace a stack of machines: an ancient parallel-port scanner, a nearly ancient fax that prints with thermal paper, and the free printer I got from my last PC. After using this model for a few months, I find it does much of what I want.
I like the ability to scan documents to files for achiving and the scanning of multiple pictures into seperate files.
I suppose I shouldn't complain much for a machine at this price point, but it has several drawbacks:
(1) After running about 200 pages through the fax/scanner page feeder, my fed pages now show up with a line through them. Documentation says to clean the small scan window (which I did to no effect). Otherwise, you're out of luck. Flatbed scanning does not show the line.
(2) Regadless of which scanner you use, the printer adds small margins to each page. If you're printing a document with no margins, it will cut off the edges.
(3) Unlike even the cheap printers bundled with my last two PCs, this one has no wake-on-network capability (that is, since it site in my office, if it's turned off and I want to print, I have to walk over to turn it on). In fact, if something is stuck in the queue and I try to print a second document, it hangs my system.
(4)Like most HP products at the bottom of the cost curve, it feels flimsy. Every time I open the cover, it feels like it's going to fall off.

X2670 All-in-one Printer Review

X2670 All-in-one Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After having experienced numerous problems with previous printers (computer not being able to recognize printer, printer not being able to handle multiple print jobs at once, printer not being compatible with more than the initial computer hooked up to, printer necessitating color cartridge even to print colorless documents), I am pleased to say that this model so far shows no sign of these issues. However, I must point out that I've usually exprerienced the aforementioned issues farther down the line, which means I am prepared for the worst. The difference in this scenario (that is, from my previous purchases of printers) is that I contacted Lexmark (the manufacturer) BEFORE I purchased the item, (an idea I must say should have occurred to me long ago), to find out whether or not the printer will need a color cartridge replacement often, even if I just want to print in black. The good news is that as long as you print a color document from this printer once every two weeks, (according to the Lexmark representative I spoke with), the color cartridge should last up to four months and this will allow printing primarily in black for that interim. That's all I wanted out of this product.

600DPI Colour & Mono HandyScan Handheld Scanner w/ 4GB micro SD (PS410) Review

600DPI Colour and Mono HandyScan Handheld Scanner w/ 4GB micro SD (PS410)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I hope the designer of this product will read my review here, and make it better, because it could be a truly very useful tool.
I really think to some people this little tool can be very helpful. It's light, easy to carry, and works very well.
One thing I really want it changed is the distance from the side edge of the scanner to the line where the scan area starts. This won't be a problem if you just need to scan a piece of paper laying on the table. But once you try to scan a page in a book/thick magazine, you immediately feel the pain, because the scan area can not cover the whole page. As you can imagine, when you hold the scanner and move it from top to the bottom of the page in a book, you can't move the scanner too much to the left to let the scanning area cover the whole page, because the most you can do is to touch the edge of the scanner to the middle of the book. As a result, the scanned image often does not cover the 2 sides of the page. This is extremely painful, and almost make it unusable. I tried to scan from left to right (instead of from top to bottom), but it has its own problems (like you will need to rotate the image, and rotate different way depending odd page or even page).
This is obviously a design flaw. If the product testers have tried to scan book, they will immediately see the problem.
The attached software ABBYY Screenshot Reader does not work on my Windows 7 edition (there is no instructions saying which version of OS the software supports). I have it installed anyway, but then found it cannot be opened. The annoying thing is the computer keeps asking if I should allow ABBYY to access internet. If it cannot even be opened, why does it try to access internet. To download trojans?

I thought the scanner was great, but the lamp went out just after 1 year after I bought it. So now all my scans have a rainbow line from top to bottom. Microtek's extent of technical support is reinstall the drivers, if that doesn't work you have to return it so we can repair it, because there are no authorized repair people out there, but us. They will not sell me the lamp, because they need to repair it themselves (they want the labor dollars). So, after I paid $1,400 for this thing a year ago I am going to have to pay another $200-300 for repair and shipping both ways.

Canon CanoScan LiDE 60 Color Image Scanner Review

Canon CanoScan LiDE 60 Color Image Scanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This scanner is very light and compact. No annoying AC power brick to get in your way as it gets power from USB connection. Small enough to slip into a notebook bag for traveling. Uses small LED light bar instead of traditional fluorescent bulb to perform scan allowing for smaller footprint. A nice touch is the included stand so you can mount it upright on a desk. However, in order to scan this way, the document must be flat else it will fall off the platen before you can close the lid.
Very pleased with scan speed due in part to its high speed USB 2.0 connection. For 200 dpi B/W docs, speed is not much different from my old scanner. The speed of this scanner really shines for color dpi settings of 600 and above. I can scan a 1200 dpi photo in less than a minute. My old scanner took several minutes to perform the same feat.
An important consideration for any scanner is its scan driver. An excellent scanner with a crappy driver will yield disappointing results. The LiDE 60 has an excellent driver with modes for beginners and experts. I had 20+ year old photos that were faded and by setting the fade correction in the driver software, I got scans which looked better with more accurate color than the original photos. It can also scan multiple photos in one pass and the driver will automatically crop and save each photo as a separate file. A great time saver if you're scanning lots of photos.
This scanner does not have a transparency adapter, so if you want to scan 35mm photo negatives or slides you'll need a different scanner. Some may be turned off that it's "only" 1200 dpi, whereas some scanners on the market in this price range are 2400 dpi or higher. Unless you plan to scan 4x6 photos and make lots of 11x17 blowups, 1200 dpi is more than enough if all you plan to do is scan photos to save on your computer. I use 600 dpi for scanning photos. I've done comparisons of a photo scanned at 600 and 1200 and barely notice a difference even at high magnification. Plus the jpeg file size of a 1200 dpi scan is about 3 times larger than that of a 600 dpi scan.
The only annoyance is the high pitched noise it makes as the light bar moves across the platen, particularly at 300 dpi or less. It's much quieter using resolutions higher than 300 dpi because the light bar moves more slowly. This is a minor nitpick as you get used to it after a few scans. I really like this scanner and highly recommend it. You get a lot of value for the price.

HP LaserJet 3390 All-in-One Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax (Q6500A#ABA) Review

HP LaserJet 3390 All-in-One Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax (Q6500A#ABA)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having owned an HP 3330 multifunction (from 2002) I thought this new 2006 model can only be better. Well, it is in some ways....I guess.
The 3390 adds duplex printing and has a built-in JetDirect for network based printing and sharing, but other than that it doesn't seem to be any different than the recently discontinued 3380. And for that matter its not a whole lot different than the 4 year old 3330. Fairly sad product innovation on HP's part considering that the competition is offering some credible new features in this class of product.
Comparing the new Brother 8860DN and the HP 3390 side by side proves the Brother is superior in most things. Since this is an HP 3390 review, I'll refer you to my Brother 8860 review for more details.
Its not all doom and gloom with the 3390, I just feel for the $700 price they are asking, HP could have added a bit more innovation.
Things missing from the HP that I wish were included:
1) duplex scanning from document feeder
2) faster scanning (its S-L-O-W)
3) a legal size scan glass (realtors still use legal paper)
4) fax forward to email
Other annoyances:
The 3390 has only been out for a few weeks, however they've already revisioned the software from V1.0 to V1.1 and now V2.0. HP has also released two firmware updates in that tims as well. Sounds good, assuming all problems are resolved, however they are not! In the couple days I used this printer, I found the following issues:
1) the TWAIN interface for the scanner will often give warning messages about the document feeder and these warnings don't make sense. Bypassing them resolves the problem. Plus the TWAIN interface counts the pages backwards (ex: 6 of 2 instead of 2 of 6).
2) I have experienced issues where printing a document from Word will cause all text to be truncated on the paper.
3) TWAIN interface will not work with the Windows XP built-in fax program.
4) If you turn off your 3390 the HP toolbox program will sometimes hang.
So, all in all its a decent machine. For anyone looking for a no nonsense multifunction this will do the job. For $200 less you can also get the Brother 8860 that will do everything the same plus more.

Epson Stylus NX115 All-in-One (C11CA46212) Review

Epson Stylus NX115 All-in-One (C11CA46212)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First things first: this is a very inexpensive all in one. Don't expect it to be as good in overall build quality and features as the expensive models from Epson or competitors.
That being said, this is a fully competent copier/printer/scanner that surprised me when I saw the prints. They are excellent.
OK, not perfect. On plain paper, some colors looked a little more washed-out than with the more expensive models (in particular the HP Photosmart Premium). But the HP costs three times as much and is only slightly better in print quality. What's different? Colors are shifted a little from the original on copies, and the saturation could be a little better (though that would also use more ink).
I like the fact that Epson sells higher capacity replacement cartridges, bringing the cost per page to a reasonable amount compared with the supplied low-capacity cartridges. I also like the speed of printing and copying once it actually starts doing so. You do have to wait a while for the first copy, especially when you haven't printed in a while ... typical for inkjet printers. But once it starts, print speeds are very acceptable.
Overall I am very satisfied, especially considering the cost. In fact, at far less than $100, the NX115 offers quite a bit. Obviously no fax, but few people fax much any more, and the scan capability is nice to have.
Software installation takes some time, but the installer does a nice job and only installs the various programs on computers that support them (I installed the software on various Macs ranging from current models to the 2nd generation iMac, all using different versions of OSX). The software plays nice with Macs, though I did not test it with 10.6.
I believe this is a solid choice for an inexpensive printer.

This scanner is amazing. We have it configured to scan 200 dpi color and it just flies through stacks of paper that are all sizes and thicknesses. As long as the 1/4th and 1/8th sheet papers are aligned at the center they never get missed.
The ultrasonic double-feed connection is working extremely well too. We've tried all kinds of things to fake it out but it has always successfully detected double feeds.
Clearing jams and double feeds are a piece of cake.
We've ran about 25,000 documents through this scanner so far and it has exceeded my expectations.
BTW we are using this in conjunction with Visionshape's Autoscan software for barcode recognition of all our documents. Also a very good product.

This scanner is a steal at this price, especially for those new to the world of computer technology. The software included allows for a variety of projects, and is explained in lay terms that make the experiance that much easier. Though this scanners' price is a bargain, you get much more than you pay for. The set up is easy, just plug it in and scan away. The resolution is great, and for those photos where your badside is showing there are a myriad of editing options available, so you can always look your beat, even when you don't. I have also scanned documents and had great results. If you are looking for a home scanner this is a great bargain with top quality software, this is it.

Pacific Image PrimeFilm 3600u for Windows and Mac Review

Pacific Image PrimeFilm 3600u for Windows and Mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This scanner is a reasonably good value and does a reasonably good job. If you have tried scanning prints with a flatbed scanner, you will be happier with the results you get scanning negatives with the PrimeFilm. A couple of caveats: first, this scanner is not fast. One roll of film a day is probably as much as you'll have patience for. Second, the scanned image quality is only as good as your negatives, and your old negatives are probably more fragile than you expected. Plan to spend a fair amount of time cleaning up blemishes in PhotoShop, and, frankly, if you used a cheap camera in the first place, don't even bother; you'll do just as well scanning the prints (and a decent flatbed scanner is a lot cheaper).
One last thing: if you want to save some money, go buy this scanner at C-O-S-T-C-O-D-O-T-C-O-M.

AcomData Enigma Fingerprint Security 500 GB USB 2.0 Rugged Portable 2.5-inch External Hard Drive BIO500UE (Black) Review

AcomData Enigma Fingerprint Security 500 GB USB 2.0 Rugged Portable 2.5-inch External Hard Drive BIO500UE (Black)

This portable drive is well made. The rubber siding helps protect it from getting scratched; would it withstand a big drop? who knows?!?!? I didn't have an issue with the software being for windows only. My only problem is that the software wouldn't recognize my index finger consistently with the biometric scanner....sometimes it would, other times it would not. If it did scan my finger correctly the software would hang up. I contacted acomdata and they emailed me an update to the software. That did not help as I still encountered the same problem. I think the portable drive needs some fixes before it will be purchase worthy. I would not recommend at this time.
